Dorsal Fin - SA Fishing Report 29/07/2015

  • Well the weekend is looking good with light winds in most areas. A series of fronts will move across but will be well south making it great to get out Metro and around the Yorkes and upper reaches. The bloodworm run has been and gone so the fish should be ready for a good feed. We are now coming up to one of the best seasons for a fish August is usually the time where you get the winter species and some of the summer variety start their move into the gulfs.

METRO
Whiting catches have improved along the coast with St kilda and north producing some nice fish. West beach and Grange have also picked up. Burley is the key (But not too much). The pilchard blocks and our crushed muscles have been selling well and has been the best burley for whiting and snapper. Snapper have been slow but there is some nice fish out wide of North Haven and the odd one coming from the shipping channel. The shipping channel does improve coming into August. Mullet are still on the beaches but is more south near Brighton. Crabs are still being caught out on the silt grounds and north of Port Gawler. Salmon trout are still in the Port river but mainly in the North Arm and Garden Island. West Lakes has been doing well on big bream in the upper reaches but the mulloway have been slow. Squid are still coming in and this weekend will be no acceptation. Best areas have been West Beach out from the ramp, Semaphore south of Bower road, Brighton and east of the black pole in shallow. Some big flathead have been caught north around the channels at Thompsons beach and Webb beach.

YORKE PENINSULA
Nice salmon have been caught at Browns Beach and off some of the beaches and rocks around Dolphin Beach and Royston Head. Butlers have some salmon, tommies and mullet, Berry Bay has been good for salmon late afternoons, Dust Hole has good schools also and south of Edithburgh is also doing OK. Edithburgh has been getting some nice snapper near Marion Reef and out in the channel. Whiting are coming from the bay and out near the oyster leases at Coobowie. Stansbury has plenty of squid and whiting are coming from areas just north of the spit and out in the patches off the cemetary. Giles has tommies and some salmon trout with the odd shoolie showing up. Port Vincent has been producing some nice bream off the breakwater inside the marina and some nice Yellow Fin whiting. Ardrossan has been a bit slow but there has been some nice size snapper out near the spit. Long liners are still working the area so watch out for their lines. Crabs are south of ardrossan in around 5 metres of water. Port Hughes and Port Victoria both are doing well on the whiting and squid. try Kemps, Coopers and the bay south of the jetty at Port Hughes and west of Goose, north of Beatrice and out on the reef at Port Victoria. Wallaroo has seen some nice shoolies come from the marina and whiting have been coming from areas near Walrus Rock and the tyre modules. Port Broughton has plenty of whiting north of the last pole and salmon trout are still in the channels. Hardwick bay has some big whiting in shallow drifting just north of the town. Squid are in the bay also. Point Turton got a bashing the last few weeks but it should be a trigger to get the whiting firing especially off Soutter.

SOUTH
Waitpinga beach and Parsons have been producing plenty of salmon along with a couple of tailor off waits. Salmon are also shooling at Salt Creek with the odd bronzie being caught also.

FRESHWATER
Callop are still being caught around the Blanchetown area and at Castles Landing. A nice cod was caught and released near Renmark last weekend and was estimated around the 20 kg mark. They were fishing for Callop with night crawler worms and got smashed. Maybe a good sign!!!

So now we are slowly coming out of the winter patterns August is when it all starts to happen and will only get better for those fine weather fisherman LOL.
