Bid to hook anglers with marine accessby: Sid Maher, Political correspondent From: The Australian August 27, 2013 12:00AM Abbott has promised to suspend Labor's marine protected areas in a pitch to the fishing vote, which is influential in a swag of seats along the eastern seaboard. The Opposition Leader, appearing at the Australian Fishing Trade Association's expo on the Gold Coast, made the announcement to cheers from assembled anglers."A Coalition government will restore confidence in the Australian fishing industry by returning scientific and commercial rigour to decision making about marine protected areas," Mr Abbott said. He said the Coalition did not want to "lock out" commercial and recreational fishers from key areas. At the 2010 election, the opposition campaigned against plans to establish the zones, which was credited with delivering the seat of Dawson, on Queensland's central coast, back to the Coalition. This election, a swag of coastal seats are up for grabs, including Herbert, based around Townsville...."We won't make decisions that damage the lives and livelihoods without talking to people first," Mr Abbott said.Mr Abbott said the Coalition would restructure the marine bio-regional planning process to address community and industry concerns about the process of establishing the marine protected areas. He promised to establish a panel to review the science supporting the boundaries for each zone. It would report back within six months. After receiving the report, the Coalition would consult with stakeholders and reconsider proposed boundaries."We know that the biggest supporter of environmentally responsible fishing practices is the fishing industry, because they do not want to harm the very environment that is providing them with a living," Mr Abbott said. The government has announced more than 2.3 million hectares will be encompassed by marine parks by next July. The Coalition has expressed concern about its impact on the fishing industry.Mr Abbott said the Coalition would require peer-reviewed scientific evidence of threats to marine diversity with the marine protected areas to be made publicly available. The Coalition would also create a recreational fishing council to improve communication between anglers and government.

Who are we?The Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation (ARFF) was formed in 2012 as the peak national body and the key voice for Australia’s recreational fishing community. This community consists of all recreational fishers and those who support them, including fishing tackle and outdoor goods suppliers, boat and boating accessory suppliers, and providers of accommodation and fishing services. At ARFF we strive to address issues affecting the recreational fishing community and to achieve our OBJECTS through the three main themes of EDUCATION, RESEARCH and ENVIRONMENT. Our Executive Team is made up of highly skilled professionals with intimate knowledge of Australia's Parliament House and with long careers of working with government officials on key strategic policy issues. ARFF is registered as a not for profit company limited by Guarantee with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), and is governed by a BOARD, consisting of representatives from various associations within the recreational fishing community. ARFF is strategically located to address the issues of the recreational fishing community, with our office being located within 5 minutes of Parliament House and within 10 minutes of the Departmental Offices of key Ministries, including the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPaC)), Department of Health, Department of Resources Energy and Tourism and the Department of Regional Australia Local Government Arts and Sport. We are also just around the corner from the Fisheries Research Development Corporation and the Australian Fisheries Management Authority.

Those dodgy politicians will say everything we want to hear to get our votes, but from past experience with the Canberra Crews, the marine park legislation will still be passed through at a later date if Tony Wabbit gets elected.Going to be a stinky election, one party wants supertrawlers, the other party wants marine parks and no take zones, and the rest of the political parties have absolutely no idea how to run the country and maintain diplomatic relations with other countries.I think I could trust a rabid dog, more than I could trust any political representatives.Out of interest, what is Nick Xenophon's stance on marine parks and supertrawlers?Or is he really just like the rest?

This way you control who you preference.
