ASD14 197
Hi guys,Really hoping one of you guys can help me out here, my dad bought this rod a few years ago and I've had it sitting in my fishing rod stand for years, and I really want to find out what blank it is.. He recons when he purchased it, the rod was custom made. It looks to be glass to me, but its actually really light, so not sure. I'm thinking of getting it fixed up and putting some Fuji alconite guide's on there and start using it as a snapper rod. Thanks in advance.
projoe 261
I think its a silstar blank as you said it feels light if was an ugly stik it would feel heavy for its class. silstar did supply rod blanks a few years back to compete with ugly stik it more than likely is a composite about 85% glass the guides going by the reel seat are more than likely freeway (korean company) products quite accessable at the time as south seas agency were the main distributor & agent. looks like a local or interstate build those fish stickers were all the rage at the time (tuna, marlin, dorado, etc) hope this helps. projoe 261
just another thought if you do decide to strip it down ( i would'nt personally) if the clear tip section ends in a clean finish under that second eyelet down under the tip its a silstar if & i doubt it will ends rather uneven its an ugly stik
ASD14 197
Projoe - thanks heaps for the information, I got a feeling its a silstar too, and I wouldn't be surprised if its a glass / graphite composite, but I could be wrong as its probably a 10yr + old rod. Also why wouldn't you strip the rod?? One of the guide rings are broken and most of the others paints all chipped of them.. I love the blank, but thought some new, Alconite guides would make it a great rod. but im open to suggestions Thanks mate.
projoe 261
ok did'nt know guides were broken, if you intend to use braid thru it yes go alconite but if mono only use go hardalloy is my advise.

ASD14 197
Projoe - Incase you wondering, I dropped the rod off at fishermans paradise and you're correct its an old school silstar glass blank, I cant remember the exact model/number, but he's stripping the whole thing rod, putting on a new Fuji sik guide on the tip, fuji alconoties on the other 6 guides, Fuji deluxe reel seat, new grips, custom colouring / engraving, and putting a photo of a snapper on there for me aswell. Cant wait to get it back.He said the blank is actually really good and quite hard to come by these days, so I thought bugger it, why not make a killer rod out of it.Thanks for your knowledge. cheers. projoe 261
No sweat, you'll get a nice rebuild there. The fish wont be able to resist it. ASD14
