  1. Yeah I've been taking them out for a wriggle every few days
  2. Yeah thats good going I spose when you buy them from the shop, you never know just how long they have been sitting in the tackle shop fridge before you get your hands on them. I remember going into a tackle shop of a mate, of a mate, to grab some pillies - while we were chatting, I mentioned his friend and he immediately goes to the bait freezer and digs right down to the bottom of the pilly blocks and pulls that one out. He said they restack the bait freezers every time a new shipment comes in so they dont have old stock going off at the bottom of the freezer. So if I was ever
  3. So one cubic meter of lead is 30% heavier than 1 cubic metre of steel.
  4. Heres a list of metal densities - higher the number the heavier per cubed metre https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/metal-alloys-densities-d_50.html
  5. yeah if you can weld, it would make things a whole lot more professional. But theres still a few options for non welders - I'd be interested to see what you come up with. Most blokes just use wire to wrap them on - but I had more zipties than wire
  6. Thanks Guru - I'd choose a snapper lead over these fellas 9.5 times out of 10 - They're smoother, heavier, more aerodynamic and offer less opportunities for tangles etc......... but in spots where you lose heavy sinkers regularly - the rebar starts making sense
  7. Haha - Nice one Doobie. Yeah I wanted to see how long they took to make, so I figured I should film it - cutting through16mm rebar takes 15 seconds - cutting and folding the wire takes about 20 - Sanding the burrs off takes around 20-30seconds - and the double Zipties takes around 20 seconds So if you were firing on all cylinders and had everything laid out - you could make an unpainted one from scratch in a couple of minutes.
  8. Not good for much - but they are good for some applications. Obviously dont paint them if you're pretty sure you'll lose them first go - and use at your own risk
  9. I was just thinking about the process and why it took so long for the maggots to take hold and what you said rings true. The reason cat food in the can wasnt ideal - is it took way too long to let off decent smell. The foul stench of death is what brings them in and my cat food in the can was too well preserved. It was basically odourless for the first couple of weeks. But when I was sorting the maggots out from the paper - flies showed up from everywhere. If I need to do it again, I'll empty the cat food into a bowl, so its fully exposed and rots quicker. Or carp fil
  10. Thats great news - thanks for the update Doobie Yeah the method I saw had a much bigger bit of plywood on a slant and bright sunlight hitting the maggots to spook them out - I'll try and find the vid Found it - who says only weirdos breed maggots ( Fast Forward to the 1 minute mark to see his set up)
  11. Yeah theres plenty of situations and rigs I wouldnt use them on - but having something thats heavy, cheap and sinks can be handy in certain scenarios.
  12. Yeah I initially started thinking about alternative weights after donating a few surf sinkers to the local reefs. We use marker floats to define the edge and losing a few bucks when they got snagged stopped making sense pretty quick. But fishing ocean rock ledges is another place where I've wondered if donating lead is the wisest move
  13. (Caution these fellas will rust and drip rusty water - you've been warned - some people fully tape them or dip them in paint so this isnt a problem) Good for spots where you lose a few. With rebar off cuts you can get for free at any building site - a bit of wire - some tape - and zip ties - you too can have these beauties. You will need an angle grinder with a cut off wheel aswell - or a hack saw. I pulled on the wire and it got to 13kg without budging so I stopped pulling. Edit - Just tried it without the tape and a couple of zip ties and I got to 13 kgs without bre
  14. I'd say I'm pretty confident.................but not confident enough to not take a quick peek after your reply. The seals are holding for now
  15. Yeah I was happy with the amount I used the smallest drill bit I have to put holes in the lid - and its one of those double snap, rubber seal, sistema containers so it should be safe.
  16. Well that was pretty painless - ended up going to the specialist feed store only to find they no longer stocked bran or pollard Thankfully both Coles and Woolies have it. Stink wasnt a major issue until you got your head in the bucket - and now they are chilling in the fridge
  17. The maggots have been transferred to another bucket with paper underneath and on top - I've been told to leave them in for 2 days before getting them into the fridge. The smell is non existent until you put you head over the bucket - so this method is going well. I'll have to deal with the smell eventually but so far so good
  18. Just went out to check the maggots and wasnt expecting much Should I transfer the contents of the can to newspaper and stick it in a bucket now - or leave them in the can for a few days
  19. Yeah I'd love to get their feed back if they are still hanging around
  20. Yeah it would take a brave man to dip a cracker into that dip - Rotten catfood puree with a mould crust
  21. Yeah I only checked it because Knackers bumped the thread - Otherwise I'd given up on it aswell
  22. Well you wouldnt bloody read about it - (unless there was a thread about maggots) The can, I'd given up hope on, has produced - you bewdy. Not exactly sure of the wisest next move - I reckon I'll leave it as is - then transfer to a bran filed bucket when they start trying to crawl out of the can. One positive of this method is the odour has stayed trapped in the can so far - but I imagine transferring them out will be a different story - I reckon I'll sieve and rinse with the hose before they touch bran
  23. Yeah I'm giving the Cat food another try in a more blow fly rich environment - saw a few hanging round today but no eggs yet
