  1. thats amazing. A book that could only sell 30 copies when it was first published (indicating not popular) now sells for over $3' date='000.[/quote']Funny comment. Ray chose to only make the amount of copies that he did. It has nothing to do with how many were sold. The individual effort put into each and every book is the reason there were never more made.It is actually one of the most sought after modern fly fishing books of its kind. from my cold dead hands.
  2. Your obsession has just got unhealthily worse mate. You will now spend hours and hours sourcing materials that are near impossible to come buy and shell out unreasonable amounts of money on said materials. You will then spend the same unreasonable amounts of time on tying said flies and never ever think about using them simply because at more than $50 smackers per fly, you simply could not justify it.And yet i am still jealous as hell. The patience needed and time spent on all aspects of it is phenomenal. And i cant wait to see what stuff you produce.Keep us posted.PS , i need to have a chat to you about binding ect. Not far of buying a blank and components to build my first rod.

  3. Projoe, that would be a great idea. Back a few years ago when i couldnt tie to save my life[not much has changed] I would pop into that store and top up a few dries before going for a fish in the hills. In fact my favorite little reel for my twig came from the display cabinet in your store over eight years ago, i got it for a bargain and it still works a dream too.

  4. What fishnuts said. The problem here is there is no "local shop" that can really help you, just the one store that even stocks fly gear worth looking at. Interstate , shops have rigged up demo rods for you to try to see what you like a "try before you buy" system. I would take your time speak to as many people you can that own fly rods and keep saving that money. The more people you know the more setups to try, the better idea you will get of what you like and want over time. Cheap gear is the death of most people starting out, combine that with no one to give casting tuition in SA and it realy stacks the odds against you. When you have little understanding of how the lines and rods work feel is everything, and cheap gear will only make that worse. And i am speaking from experience.Being a self taught caster and fisher, with cheap crap starting out its a wonder that i even still fish with a fly rod.And once you develop those bad habits gained by not being shown the "right" way to cast it is extremely hard to lose them. Its not all as daunting as it sounds but doing it the smart way will make it easier in the long run.Its all worth it in the end, one fish caught on a fly rod is worth ten on anything else  If two hundred is your absolute limit for now i would wait and double it to 400, that will at least get you a decent beginners rod with a cheapish reel and line set up.

  5. This is only going to get worse. Emu is coming on here on their own and portraying the issues they have. As a local and as a father. Being the fact that this particular forum has the people involved that were involved in the initial incident, this is a decent forum to act like adults and not children.Emu could have let it slide and simply called a meeting of all locals and fronted to the council. With enough signatures every one is cactus , not just the crew involved but everyone whom chooses to have a crack at a few bronzies from this particular place or even worse anywhere else. That being said i think the actions of old mate whom says he has been there for eons are wrong and it seems he is getting his way by causing such a fuss.Such a shame really when it seems there are groups of children of both sides of the argument.

  6. Well said AFF and Jack. I am on the side of the sharkers but most are doing themselves little favours by posting what some are on here. We have a local whom is concerned about the welfare of his kids and others from his town, regardless of if his understanding is a little wrong , and then you get a few defensive fishos who pretty muchset at instigating more crap by saying "well i will be there this weekend lets see what happens" seems more like some want to make things worse rather than better.Use your brains boys and let things cool off for a while. It is obvious that a group of fishos challenging the local people on the internet looks childish and will draw more unwanted attention than anyone wants.Comments Like "I will do what i want when i want" will turn the general puplic against the fishos at the drop of a hat.The intentions may not be to instigate trouble or make things more tense, but it is certainly what it will do, it just common sense. Hope this comes to a conclusion that does not prevent such a great pastime from being banned or have stricter rules in place.Any sharky replying to this thread needs to take a deep breath and remember its easy to get riled up when its your number one passion on the line. Keep calm and use your brains as there will be alot more people watching this thread than what some of you may think.

  7. Its simply media beat up, something that always happens after a couple of close attacks. They gotta sell papers and get viewers and such a debate is sure to get the blood flowing from both sides. Remember when Jevan was killed at Blacks the day after the kiwi fella at caves, two locations pretty far apart and the media jumped on board by saying it was the same "man eating" shark. This was impossible. The cull call was made straight after and a few people even went hunting around the bay there to no avail.Personally i think us berleying up the water and bobbing around in cages in blood soaked water is helping put us on the food chain. If we were not on the food chain before we are not far now. Surfers and divers know what risk they are taking and they choose to take it, and i am yet to hear a person of either sport be an advocate for any type of cull.

  8. Fly Casting Day with Peter Morse - Federation of Fly Fishers Certified Master Casting InstructorWhether you’re a beginner or an advanced caster we all have something to learn. I think the best thing we can learn are sufficient skills to be able to analyse our own cast (or a mates) to the point where we can figure out what’s going wrong and correct it. There are 5 Essentials to good fly casting – with just one of these Essentials missing you can’t throw a good, effective, and efficient cast.- No slack in the line.- The correct stroke length for the amount of line you have out, and for the bend in the rod.- A constant and smooth rate of acceleration.- A straight line path of the tip of the rod.- A correct pause front and back as you wait for the line to straighten.Even many advanced casters don’t completely understand these principles, but if you learn them, understand them, and apply them you will very quickly become a better caster.Where – Glenelg Baseball Park - Anderson reserve (see map)Date Sunday 31st July 2011Cost $150 pp Start time 8.30 rig up – 9.00 start.Finish time 4.00pmSome tackle can be provided – a BRIGHT ORANGE OR ANY OTHER BRIGHT COLOURED LINE IS A BIG HELP, clear intermediate lines are difficult to see and therefore analysing the loop is next to impossible if you use one.Bring water, lunch, sunscreen, a folding chair, a note pad, hat, sunnies, line cleaner and an open mind.To book a place you will need to pay a deposit. To do this please contact Peter Morse on petermorsie@optusnet.com.au

  9. Mate, it will be held on the 31st of july and the venue is yet to be confirmed , looks like somewhere near the patt, Glenelg way from what Morsie has said. He is getting all the info sorted now and i will post it here once it is confirmed, if you would like to contact him personally send me a pm and i will forward you the info needed.

  10. The venue for this year will be different, reason being is that having it at a place like the last one you tend to have people that stop by and watch or even worse stand behind a caster making for broken concentration and people getting offended when they are told they are hindering the clinic. As the choice was last minute Peter is still getting the right venue down[there may be a chance to blind flog for some three eyed bream if the proposed venue goes ahead] and then will set a flyer up, as soon as i get it i will post it here for any interested parties.Generally , you obviously need a flyrod, and preferably a bright visible line if you have a choice, and a packed lunch.

  11. As of this stage, it will be held on the 31st which i think is a sunday. As for the venue it has not been mentioned yet, i sent Peter an email today and he did not have one planned, but a little bit of interest goes a long way and he has decided to hold it again despite being very busy. As a self taught fly caster my skills are limited and with so many bad habits i need to get my casting deconstructed and reconstructed regularly and more so now i am trying to cast heavy clousers ect in the salt.To anyone who is in the beginning stages of fly fishing or someone who needs to improve a few small things or even if you have never had any tuition before i fully recommend it! I spent three hours with a pro a couple of years back and it made a huge difference to me , but time away from my gear has made me regain all my bad habits again, which makes it a very important day for me and one i would like to attend every year.Only problem i have now is making sure i can actually make it i have always had something important come up in the weeks before in the past!I will post a link for Peters email in the morning for any people wishing to get info or to book for the clinic.

  12. Have just heard from Morsie that there will more than likely be a casting clinic right at the end of July, the clinic will go for the entire day and will be $150 per person, and he will have some time the day before for one on one tuition if that is of any interest. As we do not have an accredited casting instructor here in SA its a great way of getting any bad habits pointed out and general casting bettered by a pro. I know i need the help!Once its concrete i will either post it up here or forward the forum to Peter so he can post up contact details ect.

  13. Mate, get onto these guys,http://www.flyrodreel.com.au/ ,and look at the "monic" lines they have on there, they are pretty well priced and i can say they cast well with a cane rod. Three friends had made cane rods before i went ton the flylife forum trip last year and they all had different lines, every single person who had a cast with these rods with different lines agreed the monics were the preference, the only lines that we thought cast better were the silk lines from from nick tarantskys website, the silk lines are made for cane rods and by far are the best but need a ton of maintainance and are hella expensive. You can by "furled leaders" from the site above too, they help turn the fly over a little more on the cane rods.It would also be a good idea for you to look up some sites on the net about how to care for your cane rod, most guys put them in a rod sleeve and hang them in the cupboard with their shirts ect! cane rods will warp and buckle/twist with bad after use care, they need to be loved and all ferules dryed out ect ect, clean it and pack it away after every use and it will be fine.good luck.

  14. Rollcast this could be your year re, mouse plague! all reports coming in are looking like its gonna happen again. oh ,i have had my trip to new england and it was awesome, on the first full day , beetween twenty and twenty five fish caught all rainbows and all on geehi beetles, and that was the morning session! next day i had five browns come to hand one being a touch over three pounds, less than 100mts from our campsite, in waters and runs that i was getting rainbows in the previous day.

  15. i wouldnt need to see photos , as they arenot that shy. maybee as tahn has said around boats i have never heard of that but i have def been harrassed while surfing. i have even saw one tossing a octopus around in the water at coffins while surfing about five meters away! browned my suit to say the least. i suppose it would depend on the situation at the time, Andrew Fox once told me to make a lot of noise and paddle towards one if they were harrasing us in the water. safe to say i would picture myself paddling the opposite way if it ever happened.

  16. greeny wanna be's!mate thats a classic  but there is nothing greeny about being against a seriously d...head aproach to a problem that isnt there.you guys watch too much tv, and believe it.and its about prevention the proper way.for instance , you should probably not let you kids toys get redbacks in them, instead of cleaning them out once the problems there. maybee put them inside or something.and i would be the first one to put my hand up to knock em if there was a serious problem but there isnt.

  17. and for the record , i am all for prevention of shark attacksbut i think getting the results you want by simply knocking the population down a few knotches is a easy option to a non existent problem.there will allways be shark attacks in sa , its where they live. but there is usually only one a year. every few years we may get two but its a rare circumstance.i would change my stance in a hurry if there was some kind of proof that we had been put on their menu, trust me . but i hardly think we should kill a few just so someone can "feel" safer.

  18. this is getting beyond a joke, so lets just pull out some scenario and see who agrees with it?of course youd shoot the bloody shark. and no one is asking you to choose a shark over your families.the question asked was regarding killing sharks in the gulf not wheather you would shoot a shark off brighton jettie or choose an animal over your kids.there is no proof that there is more whites around now more than ever that is actually solid, as the research done is really very young and doesnt reflect on a long enough time frame to show the truth.if they are in plague proportions, why is it when the proffesional shark tour fellas who are supposed to be the best in their feild go looking on a tour sometimes they can be out there for days on end and dont see a single white?thats hardly a plague proportion.theres no snapper there because the fishos have pilaged the place. fishing for them or killing them will not solve any problems. there is enough morons in boats knocking them off illeagaly as it is, i just dont think we need any more.
