  1. Hey guys sounds like it was a bit of a mixed bag this long weekend, unfortunately I was working but man alive its good to feel the sun on your back and to see those blue skies again. Just think of those uncaught fish itching to get on your hook this summer, bring it on! The nearest I got to fishing this weekend was looking at the goldfish in my pond, tragic!
  2. Come on lads/Lasses, how did you fare, fantastic weather but did you get that screaming run? Onya Marko.
  3. Great stories lads keep them coming, a reel hoot, reminds me of one of the times I went fishing at Wirrina, one of my mates is Japanese, he was fishing for squid, he had a couple of good ones and was just bringing in another when a dolphin latched hold of his squid, my mate was really concerned as the dolphin wouldnt let go and he thought maybe the jag had got caught in the dolphin's beak. Thankfully the dolphin managed to free itself. Anyway our Japanese mate copped a load from us guys on the return journey home, comments like, "What is it with you Japs, you're not happy just catching whales
  4. Come on lads, I'm sure you have all got a tale to tell regarding a crazy fishing trip you have been on.I will get the ball rolling... The lads chipped in to treat a mate to a fishing charter for his birthday. Everything was going well with some good hook ups when the birthday boy made a cast and felt something move in his pocket but in the excitement of hooking into a good fish he forgot about it till he had landed the fish. Only then did he realize his wallet had slipped out and gone overboard, unfortunately it had $600 in it plus various cards etc... we never did find it but I reckon some lu
  5. Hey lads I understand all the heat this topic is generating, no one likes paying even more taxes. However if the government does use revenue raised to improve fishing then I am all for it. I have been in this fantastic country 12 years now and compared to the U.K. where you have a massive population on a tiny island fishing for very limited fish stocks, we are spoilt for choice. Infact considering the small South Aussie population I am amazed at how good facilities are, imagine how much better it could be for all of us if the government uses the revenue properly. To quote someone famous; "You

Have you checked out Marlin on youtube, they have attitude, a couple of the marlin actually spear some unwary fishos as they are hauled in. Not sure how to down load the footage to S.H. any advice Nev as I reckon it's interesting footage? Worth a look. Onya Marko.
  7. Interesting replies folks, I guess where ever you are it depends on the magic on the day, weather, hungry fish, location and good company. I lived in Zimbabwe for some years, tell you what tiger fish are an amazing fish to catch, pretty agro with a mouth full of teeth.I was in Scotland for 2 years the salmon there were magic. South Africa was quite an experience to on the fishing front. Must admit that I think Oz has so much going for it though with so many climatically diverse areas. Enjoyed fishing in Tassie. Onya guys, Marko.

Johnny Rotten wrote: Must have been in the '80s when you caught your mullet... obviously your casting must have improved since then, was the guy still attached to his mullet or was it just a wig? not that long ago,but a guy was fishing close by,wearing the ever popular flannelette / track pants / thong combo, with a mullet hair do,his kid looked like a stunned mullet, and his "rotund" missus(who was probably his sister) with half her teeth missing smelled like a blind mullet, and the daughter was really badly sunburned........she looked like a red mullet.........when I got back to my car, there w

  10. MarsOne wrote: Yep, I know what you mean, I remember fishing some streams back in "OL' Blighty" for trout, honestly some of the streams were no more than a meter wide and you wouldn't believe the fish that came out of them!... Went with a mate on Monday to a small stream literally less than 30cm deep, brown trout chasing the lures, magic. Ever seen the dvd: "A River Runs Through It?" (At least that is what I think it was called), fantastic mate, wets your appetite. Onya, Marko.

  12. So where do you reckon is the fisho's paradise lads/lasses? Is it all about the fish or does it have something to do with the location and scenery?Anyone experienced an incredible fishing expedition over seas? It would be interesting to hear your comments folks, onya Marko. :woohoo:
  13. Del wrote: Just discovered this wonderful thread posted by Del, obviously he was on an international culinary tour to discover gourmet delights for the Aussie table.... Hmmmm is Del thinking of becoming the next South Aussie master chef? Please mate I came here from the U.K. because of your amazing food and lifestyle, it's bad enough giving in to the big golden "M", do we have to take on the other tripe and "offal" food from the states? You Aussies have some of the best seafood and general fresh produce in the world. Any one else discovered "great food" from overseas?
  14. reelin wrote: I think you might find that the Fury Knife is actually the Furi brand of knives 1 of the four or 5 top knives favoured by chefs- Victorinox, Global, wusthoff, Mundial and furi all have really good filleting knives! i use my victorinox boning knive like chucks apart from mine has a slight upward curve sort of a curved dagger style! I also use a diamond steel every time i use the knife as you cant substitiute for sharpness! Thanks Reelin, I'm beginning to feel "reelly" dull in my knowledge of filleting and fish knives, it would be great if we could organise some fish filleting tech
  15. Sandy that culinary photo you put up really did the trick, had to go and grab a couple of ham sandwiches with tomato sauce quick smart, very appetising! Have you thought of nominating for master chef?
  16. Yep Fishy, a mate of mine bought me a set of Japanese Makato knives, but I'm coming to the conclusion its not the knives at fault but the useless Pommy tool on the other!!!
  17. Cheers Chuck and Nev, picking up some good tips here, when I have the new arsenal of 25 knives it will be a good excuse to fish much more in order to justify the expense.
  18. jagger wrote: sounds like it's time for a bigger smoker then :silly: If you go to some of the slaughter houses and ask them what they do with their knives when they dispose of them you may be in luck. I got a couple of old victorinox knives form a mate that works in a abotoir that sharpen up beautifully ( as you would expect from a butcher and a world famous knife)By the time the butcher has finished with them they are a great shape and size for fish.Hmmm, the way this thread is going looks like I am going to need a semi trailer. Good tip about the slaughter house old knives, cheers
  19. brenton wrote: Thanks mate for the advice, some of the old knives although not modern stainless steel get a fantastic edge when sharpened. Used to have a really good 2nd world war German army dagger, brilliant, unfortunately got nicked in the U.K., alas just can't trust the Poms!!! :cheer: :cheer:
  20. afishyfish wrote: Good point Fishy, saw an old guy filleting with a well used butter knife, poetry in motion mate. As to the machete going in your luggage to Queensland.... Get a bigger case!!! ... you are going to need it anyway for the mega fish you're gonna catch and bring back. One word of warning about the machete in your luggage mate, might be arrested as an S.A. terrorist! ...
  21. Now there's an idea Fishy, but I do enjoy smoking small fish fillets like tommy, mullet and ST in my smoker, taste great that way mate. The last black marlin I caught just didn't fit in the smoker!
  22. shagging wrote: Cheers mate, is an OP shop the best place to pick one up from?
  23. Lads just wondered what filleting knife you have found best for general purpose on smaller fish e.g. KG, ST, Mullet etc? I have heard the old bone handled butter knives are great for their flexibility and sharpness, also that a "Fury" is really good, what do you reckon?Cheers lads, any advice appreciated, my "Tramontina" 3ft Machete, just doesn't do the trick!
