  1. ohno, dobbed in..all worms were extracted digitally today i tried the pliers but straight away you could see they were just no good, for me it was all about feeling what the worm was doing so i knew when to grab him which made the pliers useless
  2. SUCCESS!the worm warriors showing fine form today, almost master baiter status but not quite..off to a bit of a slow start then a cheer as brent manages to snag a worm, not long after i manage my first, blue was determined but unfortunately didnt make the scoreboard.however, blue did get a bit of head to make it worth the effort!Savagelip was also down there getting into em and i think he outdid all of us put togetheranother great day, cheers guys :cheer: SCOREBOARD:Brent61southoz: 1Vapor: 3Bluegoose: 0.1

  6. i like my swibo boning knife
  7. it wont happen, the fishery is too fragile.we target the prawns in the late stages of their life cycle, the ones amatuers would catch are the spat that feeds the gulfsprawns have a life cycle of around 4 years.
  8. ah just messing around :)on another note..we start survey for the may trip on saturday night to start fishing on tuesday.
  9. theres just too many prawns in that gulf at the moment nev, thats why people arent catching any.dont worry tho us guys that catch the prawns get the blame for the snapper going missing
  10. ahh i see, i thought you meant 'im starting to wonder if the bumper ammount of prawns about is because of the lack of snapper around' more literally. but yeah everythings in a frenzy after the prawns, you should see some of the flounder we get.. they have the perfect outline of a large prawn in their stomach lol
  11. unloading is the easy bit :Pnot sure nev, as far as i know a lot of snapper follow the prawns around.one of the pro's here is always asking us what the surveys were like in certain areas so he can work out if its worth the fuel going out there or notDel is right, prawn fishing in these 2 gulfs are 2 of the most intense fisheries in the world
  12. haha you wish AFF, think ill be out fishing when thats on anyway.coight: im on the Candice Ki should mention there are no large weights dragging on the bottom, if you look in that diagram in my last post the boards are set to a certain angle so that water flow spreads them and therefore the net too, there isnt really anything being dragged directly along the bottom or stirring anything up.the prawns rise up out of the mud on the dark of the moon and thats when we target them.
  13. fishnfreak wrote: theres a lot of bull spread by people that have no idea what they are talking about, if you think about it we want to catch just prawns..the more crap in the net the less efficient the net is and the more the prawns get damaged and the less we catch.the amatuers always point the finger at professionals and because we trawl using nets people make a lot of assumptions that they push on to other people, they see nets hanging up with big chains on them and assume the worst.we actually have a lower bycatch ratio than nearly all other fisheries including amatuers with hooks and sin
  14. we did have a pretty big trip for this gulf, spencer gulf stepped it up another notch though.at 11:30pm on the first night we were told that the guys in the spencer gulf had already caught 3.5 tonne and were calling the night off at 2:30am. usually we trawl from sunset to sunrise.the price we get will probably drop but weather or not thats passed on at the local shop would be anyones guess. they may be a few $/kg cheaper than this time last year i guess we just have to wait and see.keep in mind though when you go to buy seafood buy local!!i dont just say this because i catch them but the prawn
  15. cheers guys, they had already unloaded 2 cranes in perth!i think that ship was specially constructed to transport them

  17. its a bit of a pain but best way is to empty the spool then fill it with the braid first then you'll see how much backing you needthe backing should be around the same diameter as the braid so it lays on there nicely.make sure you fill it right up to the lip too, it will help a lot with casting distanceyou have to put braid on really firm too, keep plenty of weight on it!!
  18. heres a photo of everything all set up -> clicky
  19. thanks for the comments guys,Noob - my scopes sit on top of a motorised mount that tracks the sky, i control that via laptop and can point it at whatever fairly easily by clicking on my lappy :)if you were trying to find them manually it can take a bit of effort, some are too faint for your eyes to even see through an average telescope.ill add a photo of my setup later if ya like?

  25. we get them a lot on the prawn boats, just to make sure you all know they can cause SERIOUS pain for up to 8 hours you could be vomiting or even pass out..not a good fish to play with at all :)if you do get spiked by one get it straight under the hottest water you can handle and put a pressure bandage on above it
