Hi guys, I'm a bit of a novice to fly fishing but I do intend to purchase a fly rod as soon as I can.The rod will be used for salmon trout, yellowfin whiting, carp, redfin, trout etc. Before I buy the rod, I have a few questions. I understand, the line/ rod weight system and was thinking maybe a 6 or 7 weight rod? Would this be the most versatile or would I need to buy two different rods for freshwater/ saltwater?Which brands make good beginner fly combos, backing, tippets etc?Price range probably between $100-$200 for the combo. I have seen Okuma and Pflueger combos on BCF's website. Are these any good? Thanks fellas.

Hi ethanol, welcome to the site. Well what I would do is head to a specialist fishing store like a Tackleworld or a BCF or even better a local tackle shop and talk to them and seek advice on what think you should buy to get started in fishing. I know they are selling Shimano Sonic Pro rods down at BCF for $60. In my eyes, that would be a pretty good beginner rod because of the range of ways you could use it.http://www.bcf.com.au/online-store/products/Shimano-Sonic-Pro-Spin-Rod-7-2-4kg-2-Piece.aspx?pid=121786In terms of reels, well I would probably get a Shimano 2500 Sienna. This reel is strong, reliable, versatile and retails for around $60 as well. http://www.bcf.com.au/online-store/products/Shimano-Sienna-FD-1000FD.aspx?pid=218585&variant=true#DescriptionWhen it comes to line, you might want to ask about 'braid.' It is well suited to most types of fishing because of its advantages over monofilament line (the more common one). But I'm sure the tackle store owner would be able to work out which type/ strength etc. etc.If you are interested in getting a tackle box going, again I think it would be best to consult someone at a tackle shop. Apart from that, good luck and enjoy this great site.Cheers.

There used to be a bass fishing game that was unreal fun' date=' powering around the lake in your bass boat fishing different areas[/quote']Yeah I think I have played that one UHF. Great way to get people panicking though statesquider. I fell for it too.

So is nanofil supposed to be used as leader material or mainline? Doesn't sound too good either way.Sounds like I'll just stick to the braid/ flurocarbon combination then.At least you tried something new.

Remember, it is the line that keeps you connected to the fish; not your rod/ reel. There's no point in buying a great combo if your going to only spend a few dollars on a cheap brand of braid. It's just not worth the risk when your dealing with fish like mulloway. I have recently purchased some 20lb Power Pro for my mully combo but other brands like Fins would still be sufficient.

Nice fish bass13. Looks like pretty calm conditions down there too. Would have been relaxing sitting on the sand waiting for your pilly to be taken

What outfit are you after? A plastics/ HB lure casting one, or a heavyish bait type? Lot of variables when it comes to buying gear mate. Probs need to give a bit more info on what your after.

Me neitherCant open them Bass.

Yeah Breambo they seem all right' date=' they have them on the Fin Nor jig sticks as well.My brother loves his fin nor..his is an overhead rod with these grips...but having a spin outfit with these grips with finger indentations is pretty cool too I reckon.I think they would be best during a long fight with say a big King [/quote']Yeah. I agree with you there. Would take a bit of getting used to for bream spinning though. Those grips sound a lot more comfortable than conventional EVAs or cork even. -

possession limits anyone??Good to hear fisheries are down there keeping an eye on things. Hate people keeping undersize catches...

Yeah I use the rig with two swivels and the ball sinker running in between them with a size 6 long shank baitholder hook. Another important thing I add to my yellowfin whiting rigs is pink tubing. Although I use 'Instinct' brand I'm sure most others are good. I put these near the swivels so that the ball sinker hits the tubing instead of getting stuck on the swivel. You can also add attractor beads too. By adding colour to your rigs, you can draw the fishes' attention to your baits a bit easier when the water is murky.Hope this helps. I'm sure other guys will give you their favourite rigs as well.

That's probably because they cost sooo much now. Good to hear fisheries are down there keeping an eye on things. Hate people keeping undersize catches...Tons of people down there today right down the beach.

Nice fat looking fish grego. Few mullet always a bonus too.

Every tenth cast or so, cast and let a bit of line out. Then hold the line under a bit if tension and wind. I have found, by doing this that I hardly get wind knots anymore.

Awesome tailor azza. That's absolutely massive. I have heard of tailor being caught on beaches near the foot of Yorkes but never managed to catch 1 myself.

There are a few crabs at Ardrossan but mostly undersize I think

Maybe it ate the seal?

I would keep the stradic on. If it weighs nearly the same as the sustain, I would leave it on because of the extra line capacity. Plus the stradic is a silky smooth reel.

Great piece of footage there Chuck. Looks great, sounds great and feels great to know that Childhood Cancer received that much money through public generosity. Awesome work.
