  1. went down for a quick fish this morning but didnt really get a good shot as my cousin had to go to a mates place. mite pop down again this arvo although im trying to talk my uncle into putting the boat in and having a crack at the Snapper, perfect water today so far
  2. i have heard of KGW's over 2kg but i have not seen them to verify. shane mensforth was telling me he had caught some around 2kg at i think it was pearson island.
  3. no worries, yea shane definatly kept us entertained with some good stories, things he has seen and caught. he thought it was funny to come up to us and lock the drag whilst we were trying to bring in 100+kg rays. was funny to watch unless u were the one on the rod!
  4. yea, i got one of those see through ones that was labelled a whiting popper so i reckon i might give that a go as well. it's all very exciting, targeting a new species
  5. well im gunna nose around the foreshore so i will go get some size 6's, pretie a few rigs before i go than change them around if im not getting the hook ups
  6. no worries, ring Gav from KI Fishing Adventures, he will tell ya the best time to come and put u onto the fish when u get there
  7. certainly is, i just wanted to get a general idea as to how to go about it, which i now have so cheers for the info, i will let ya know how we go
  8. i might rig my cousins with the paternoster and mine with the running sinker and just play around, see what works.
  9. no worries, i will give is a go and report back
  10. yea? i mite nose around and see what i can get, it's more of an exploratory fish than a hardcore assault, ive never targeted them so i reckon i will take a few different baits down and see whats working for me. in terms of rigs, would you recommend a lightly weighted paternoster or one hook above the sinker, one hook below or what? size 4 hooks not to big? excuse the ignorance, like i said, YFW virgin
  11. cool cheers, im gunna go dig some seaweed worms for bait as well i reckon. just gunna take my cousin down, he is pretty keen to catch a couple so we shall give it a go and see what happens
  12. i was just wondering if anyone knew if there are still any Yellowfin Whiting around or am i gunna have to wait until it warms up again? i have never targeted them before and was thinking of giving it a go this weekend if they are still on the chew. i was gunna have a go off of the foreshore at Whyalla so any info including rigs, bait, times to go etc would be great
  13. hopefully. yea well they say you can fish them very effectivly straight out the packet without bait but if you wanna start soing stuff like that you might as well take up flyfishing i reckon. everytime i have used one i have put bait on it but thats not to say they dont work without it
  14. i have read alot about flasher rigs for snapper recently as well as seing them on some fishing shows. i have used them a few times and not found them to be any advantage. making up my own rigs seems to work just as well, not to mention being quite a bit cheaper. was wondering if others have used them and found them to work really well or not?
  15. i bought myself a Stella 5000 and matched it with a Wilson Live Fibre Snapper FC 7ft rod 4-10kg. caught bluefin up to 12 odd kg's, snapper, whiting, nannys, a groper, eagle rays...its very versitile. got 30lb power pro braid on it at the moment which is probably a bit heavy for the rod but it handled it nicely even when i locked up 13kgs of drag on the tuna. it was an expensive combo but its paid for itself i reckon
  16. you guys probably already know about this one but the BOM has an app also where you can see the latest wind predictions. i dont have a smart phone but one of my mates showed me, pretty handy
  17. i will do a quick review of the tackle i used on this trip whilst im here..i bought myself a Stella 5000 spooled with 30lb power pro braid and matched to a Wilson live fibre 4-10kg Snapper FC 7' rod. the Stella was flawless and up to the task of probably 70% of the fishing out there. the rod was also good although next time i will be taking couple of heavier outfits as most of the bottom fishing was in 50+ metres of water and the sinker alone put a bit of a bend in my rod.my next purchase will be a Stella 10000 spooled with 50 or 60lb braid and matched to a Tcurve of some sort (borrowed one of
  18. As we motored off for our last day of fishing the wind was still chuffing along reasonably strongly but off we went again to try for some more whiting. Gav had warned us that conditions weren't in our favour as we were in his familier area by now and the wind combined with the strong tides made for tough fishing. he alos said that he finds the whiting seem to come on the bite alot better late afternoon so all these things meant that we moved spots probably about 10 times to eventually end up with i think around 15 or so Whiting, a few mid sized Snapper and a lovely Harlequin fish that a certai
  19. Day 4 dawned and our target species was Whiting so off we trundled to the first drop. when we got there the whiting were a bit shy and this proved to continue to be the case as the tide started to pick up speed. the fast flowing water caused quite a few tangles and although we did boat about 30 whiting by lunch we had to move around alot and work pretty hard for them. undersize snapper proved to be a bit of a drama as well although i remember AF pulling quite a decent sized one up as he was fishing just behind me. After lunch the tide started to slow and the Whiting started to bite a bbit more
  20. Day 3 came along and we had the deep divers out again on the way to fish a little known wreck near mouth flat. i think we might have got one Bluefin but they werent playing the game unfortunatly. on last years trip this area is where they hooked and lost the 100kg+ Tuna so everyone had the heavy gear out but no joy. Anyway, we got to the wreck and everyone was pretty amped up about what we might catch there as our deckie Hairs is also a longliner and had previously caught some nice mulloway at this spot so anticipation was high as we dropped the anchor. luck didnt seem to be on our side though
  21. at the anchorage on day 1 we put out some shark baits on the bottom and caught 2 large smooth rays. one of the lads had a Stella 18000 spooled with 80lb braid matched to a 400 deep jig Tcurve rod and struggled to move the ray so that just shows how big it was. i also pulled up 3 nice calamari later in the evening.Day 2 we set off from the anchorage at about 7am and had the lures out again whilst heading to our bottom bashing spot. apparently there had been kingfish around but we only got one or 2 bluefin when we reached our spot. out went the lines and a variety of fish was once again caught.
  22. just got back from a 5 day charter around KI with Kangaroo Island Fishing Adventures. firstly i would like to say that if anyone is looking to do a charter down that way i can't recommend going with Gavin Solly, the skipper, highly enough. he wont rest until he puts you onto the fish and when he does find them, hold on!!anyway, we had 8 people on the charter including Shane Mensforth and Archerfish from this site. we set off from Gavins private marina early on Monday morning and had four lures in the water straight away trolling for Bluefin Tuna. i was the first to hook a fish which turned out
  23. i agree with Bigmac54, i have been buying all the big mags and the biggest issue i have is alot of the articles are written by east coasters for east coasters and feature alot about tournament fishing, ultra light lure and soft plastic fishing etc and generally they are at least 50% ad's. i would like to see more articles about South Australia and WA and i understand that you can only publish what is sent to you etc but maybe instead of another story about a trip by the major fishing journalists to the top end chasing Barra and Mackeral they could do a few trips down this way to KI or Wedge or
  24. nice job on the yellowfin, i have to say though that i agree with you about the imported cockles, i tried them once, never again, the ones i got were all shell, there was hardly any actual cockle in them. oh well least i know now!
