Boaties rejoice, Victor Harbor is a step closer to developing an eastern boat ramp. The concept design for an eastern boat ramp, created by Magryn and Associates and commissioned by the Boating Facilities Working Party and funded by the City of Victor Harbor in December, is now complete.Furthermore, at the June 27 council meeting, the majority of councillors supported the estimate construction costs, isometric drawings and an environment study price be provided to the council's July 25 meeting, to allow the councillors to make an informed decision about whether to proceed with an eastern boat ramp development. However, city manager Graeme Maxwell said council has not committed to an eastern boat ramp beyond preliminary investigation of a potential site, design and cost."Much public and government agency consultation would need to occur before the council is likely to decide if the project is to proceed," he said.Mr Maxwell said the most significant capital works commitment the council currently faces is the closure of the landfill, reinstatement of the landfill site to EPA requirements and establishing a waste transfer station."Council is confronted with many community demands including an aquatic centre, performing arts facility, eastern boat ramp, new cemetery, redevelopment of Ocean Street, multi deck car parking development, road construction projects, storm water management projects and much more," he said."While some work is being done towards many of these initiatives, their timing and priority for development will depend on many factors, the most significant being funding."Council's long term financial plan contemplates a major project initiative every three to four years. This can only be accelerated if major grants or other external funding sources can be accessed."Mike Westley, chair of the Boating Facilities Working Party and deputy squadron leader of the Victor Harbor Goolwa Sea Rescue Squadron said the development of an eastern boat ramp in Victor Harbor is "vital".
