newtontoney 57
Just wondered what people use on there baitcaster reels for throwing slugs in the surf....iv got a 8ft overhead rod and abu 6000 reel, wanted to know if braid is a pain for knots etc on the baitcaster reels ? cheers
Ugly4Life 41
Beach fishing is about the only time that I ever use mono instead of braid any more. With the wind that often comes up on surf beaches, braid knots can be a real pain in the bum. newtontoney
plankton 725
I prefer braid anytime I'm using lures, although for throwing slugs to salmon I use a threadline rather than a baitcaster, loaded with 14lb fireline. In the past I have used an Abu 6500 for lure work, and next time I get down to Salt Creek I'm gonna try that setup throwing some heavier weighted sp's and jigs for the mullies. Never had a problem with wind knots when running heavier braid (+10lb) or throwing metal slugs of 1oz or more. newtontoney
newtontoney 57
Would I get more distance by using braid ?
plankton 725
There are heaps of factors that affect distance, the most important being technique, but the thinner diameter of braid can certainly help as well.
newtontoney 57
Have you ever used a wind on leader on a bait caster ? I was reading an article that said it can act as a shock absorber when going for the long chucks ? would 20lb braid on an small abu baitcaster be to heavy ? id like to be hitting atleast the 80 metre mark. using 40g slugs
plankton 725
I use a shock leader on my heavier overhead surf outfits to prevent break-offs when power casting. IMO it isn't necessary throwing 40g slugs. An Abu 6000 size reel is perfect for 50lb braid, a 5000 is good for 20-30lb. With an Abu reel, a decent rod and good technique 80m should be no problem. storm boy
