  1. I'll see how it goes and then maybe convert to 10kg I think the line i have is berkley big game 10kg, currently running berkley big game 8kg.
  2. Not a fan of Yozuri hybrid, have it on a few reels and its getting replaced asap. I have a spool of line i got on sale somewhere that still cost me a few bucks that I can spool it with. The reel is totally full as i've only used it a handfull of times so no where near needing replacement But I have at least 800m of a 1200m spool of 10kg lying around so I don't need to buy it.But if people think its still feasible to use 8kg I'll stick with it for now :)As for rods I do need to upgrade to more serious gear but for the time being the reel sits either on an uglystick gold 10ft 6-10kg rod or a 12
  3. I have a reel (Okuma Avenger 80) that I'm currently running with 8kg (approx 470m) on and I'm thinking of converting it to 10kg (approx 380m). The reel is basically only used off the beach with a 10-12ft rod (which needs to be upgraded), I use it to target salmon occasionally and have sniffed around with rays. Mainly gathers dust in the shed and isn't used.So my question is what line weight is best for beach fishing? I'd like to target gummies, schoolies, mulloway and salmon. I'm just not sure if 8kg is too light. Any help again would be much appreciated :)Cheers Tom
  4. Yeah i know what you mean, do need to correct though... the line i was using was not okuma but the yozuri hybrid one. Totally useless for spooling or for making up rigs, now that line is going to be used around the house for random things not worth the bother! I'm in the process of overhauling my gear and putting some real thought into what I actually need to use and what line is best and what combos i'd like to use from now on. The way I do everything now is all slapped together with minimal thought so I think I wil really benefit from a decent look at what I need. Should help me a bit more
  5. My drag was definitely tight enough, I always run it at 1/3 breaking strain, comparing how much line is on my reel now to what it would have been I'm guessing there couldn't have been more than 200yds on it. When you cast a 45gm pillie off a beach as far as it can be physically thrown and you get a big salmon it doesn't leave much. I rarely fish off boats as I'm prone to chundering haha so all my fishing is done on jetties, on beaches or off rocks.
  6. Ah cool. I've used that line before its on one of my reels at the moment. I'd forgotten what it was called, cheers for that
  7. That is a fantastic idea for rod storage, love the idea. I'm in the process of working out how to store mine under the tray on my ute, just don't know if they'll cop too much abuse in pvc pipes (Obviously wrapped up and not dumped straight in).Great idea though
  8. I'm in Adelaide and I'm not driving at the moment So local is the go for me, my mate is getting his done too so I reckon I'll go to one of the local site sponsors and get it done there.Cheers
  9. I reckon the spool must not have been full at the time, might just but some better line. Is currently spooled with okuma 8lb which i used to love but now hate with a passion. The line is totally useless! Stretches ridiculously and has the worst memory of a line i've ever seen :(Can anyone recommend a decent 8lb line that comes on a 300yd spool?
  10. @ AC Hardfronts PM sentYou'll have to pardon my ignorance new to these sorts of reels and stuff.
  11. I find a lot of the line disappears when you cast off the beach and the biggest I've caught on it was just under 4kg and took most of the line, just want more line to play it safe.May end up just spooling with mono again and see how it goes
  12. Cheers sounds like a plan. My mate bought one too but feels 30lb is too light and wants 50lb so may as well do them at the same time. I reckon 30lb is fine as I don't mind a fight
  13. I just bought a shimano tld25 and i'm spooling it with 30lb mono. I'm looking for a rod for use off the beach targeting sharks, mulloway and rays. Does anyone have any opinions as to what length rod I should go or how heavy? Headed to salt creek in a couple of weeks so wouldn't mind it soon.Any help would be much appreciatedCheers Tom
  14. I'm looking at converting my Okuma Avenger ABF30 to braid (will upgrade the reel when money permits) and i'm not sure what to put on it..I currently run 8lb mono and it fits 260yards of it, the line is running low and I'd like to replace it soon. I use this reel more than any other and target carp in the torrens, squid, flathead, mullet, gar, bream, whiting, salmon trout and salmon etc. Now I find it to be great fun on big salmon but the line capacity isn't quite high enough so I'd like to increase it. I enjoy using a smaller reel and its less abuse on the wrists at the end of a day of casting
  15. I bought a shimano tld25 reel the other day and I want to get it filled in a shop as I'd like it to be done properly with even pressure and straight as I know I'll mess it up. I don't have much money at the moment as i'm committed to purchasing something else but i'd like it done asap. Does anyone know what cost I'm looking at to fill it with 600yards of 30lb mono? Cheers Tom
  16. I can't believe anyone would consider buying carp... I had a fish in town today and my mate and i took (I did weigh this) 30kg of carp (19 carp) and am totally stoked Freezer is full now and it only took 5 hours... Would have been a perfect afternoon if we had a few brews..
  17. Thats the same fish as mine isn't it? Common names always vary... Regardless I wouldn't even consider eating that
  18. ha a prawn that could be a cool idea, I'm going to give it a crack next time I have a few lying around
  19. This is a really hard one... I've looked far and wide for this and the best fit I can find is the Golden Weedfish (Cristiceps aurantiacus). Very similar characteristics and found in correct area. Not sure how to post a link but there is a picture at this site which shows an identical caudal fin. Colour is a little bit off but this one was found dead :)http://images.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://australianmuseum.net.au/Uploads/Images/2972/Cristiceps_big.jpg&imgrefurl=http://australianmuseum.net.au/image/A-Golden-Weedfish-found-at-Lord-Howe-Island/&usg=___7aMNbNaAloCcUrUPmT-64hjGAk=&
  20. @ lows_13, I'm guessing the conflicting reports he has heard are the best time is summer or winter....
  21. I've never found lures before... When I dive I find squid jags but I still never find as many as I lose and I never find expensive ones either :(Ah so bloodworms can be frozen! I might hae to give them a sniff What species do you target with them?
  22. I support my tackle stores enough with all the tackle I purchase I'd have to spend at least $1000 a year without reels or rods, but I wouldn't change a thing if I had more money I'd spend more. If I could stop losing gear I'd save so much money each year but who am I kidding I'd find a way to spend it anyway...How do you store bloodworms? Just trying to work out how you keep them for a long period of time. At the moment I'm looking for long term keeping of bait so its there when I need it. I'd like to breed gents but it's easier to buy them and they last a while in the fridge anyway. But i'
  23. Hahaha I've been onto this money saving idea for a while so I've already come up with all of those ideas I saved up and bought a 150L chest freezer for my fish and fish frames. I now keep absolutely everything for burley and bait. The freezer also contains 4 2L cordial bottles and 12 600mL coke bottles as you suggested for the esky so I don't have to buy ice anymore. I am still keen to get some sheets of techni-ice for he esky too. The bottles work brilliantly in the esky and I'm saving at least $5-$10 every time I go fishing now which is always cool.I fish the torrens more often than anythin
  24. Thanks guys, Some great replies there, I think I'll stick with the Tigers then I definitely wont be hammering them much as I don't fish all that often. Its mainly a money saver as I have the space and I'm trying to cut down how much money I spend on bait.Sat down a while back and worked out how much money goes into ice and bait and I'm trying to make it as cheap as is physically possible. Also gives me more money to blow on real gear!!
