  1. Well, I didnt REALLY question it! I just needed an excuse to treat myself to this sweet pain which constantly awakens my senses and reminds me that I'm alive! {SMILIES_PATH}/tongue.gifThese hooks give me an insight into the fishies perspective on things too! {SMILIES_PATH}/grin.gif
  2. Agreed! Let's get back to this "wise" Bream thingy then!I'm still having a problem working out if they're wise or stupid! {SMILIES_PATH}/embarrassed.gifLook at the extent we have to go to trying to catch them, where some very subtle differences can make the difference between getting our bag, or coming home fishless! The small details like making sure a tag end is trimmed neatly away. the size of the loop we tie a lure on with, so that it doesn't create a bubble trail. How a small change in lure shape can make all the difference, or a subtle change in colour! Dropping a size in leader to promp
  3. I too believe we all do what we can to minimise pain, distress, suffering and to treat our catch humanely. That's why I was gonna run a "mini-series" here on these issues, where we could discuss each and every aspect in detail, beginning wiv the first in the series "Do fish feel pain?" moving though to:Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1972Fishermans code of conductdistress in fishHumane treatment of fish1) hooks 2) capture3) handling4) release5) dispatching your catchCatch & Release V Catch & KillEtc, etc, etcNow my plan is in a shambles, and I dont think you're really sorry at all!
  4. just wanted to add i dont keep or eat bream either when i hook em in the port, just if someone did it would be and should be okay. cheers srickUmmm, it IS ok mate! Some like myself DON'T eat Bream, because a) they have such a slow growth rate making a legal sized fish quite old by comparison to other speciesb) many of the areas they choose to live is so polluted. That's our choice! For ME, Bream is purely a sporting fish.If YOU wanna catch Bream and eat them, it's perfectly legal so long as they are of size and ya don't exceeed ya bag limit, so go for it!Likewise, I'd never eat a Mulloway from t
  5. Oh, one other thing I'd like to bring up!For those of you like myself who believe YES, fish can feel pain, can you answer WHY fish aren't included in the 1972, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act?
  6. GH, as you're aware, I have no problems with anyone discussion their opinions, I had a plan with my line of questioning here though.I wanted to avoid discussing angling at all, and solely concentrate on the question of a fish's capability to feel pain "at this stage", to see if we had any sort of concesus on the subject. Then "later" I wanted to lead on the effect of angling and if pain is caused by angling or if only "distress" is caused by angling. Our views on pain itself would have decided whether to then discuss "pain" caused by angling, or "distress" caused by angling. Then I had intended
  7. Oh look! Ya try to earn an honest pirately income with a lil rape, pillage and pluderin' and suddenly you've got the entire Royal Navy breathin' down ya neck and threatening to send ya to the gallows, the scurvy dogs! The buggers even branded a "P" on my forearm now, and I find that quite ridiculous given that I finished my pirate's apprenticeship and probationary period decades ago!Now where be me buccaneers? Oh that's right, on the side of me buccan head! {SMILIES_PATH}/grin.gif
  8. I was directed here by a site sponsor.
  9. Why did ya sign off as Wino, Goat Herder???Don't go reading more into the question than what is actually there! This is only about pain! It's NOT about fishing, or humane methods of dispatching, or how we should be treating our catch, etc. Not about whether angling is percieved as a humane sport or not, and it's not about how we should act as anglers.Interesting question you posed yaself about the blueys! They regularly lose claws, withoput our interference, so does this cause them pain or not? Simple yes or no answer. Nothing to do with catching, killing or treatment of crabs, only pain!
  10. I'm definately ANTI-peta and everything they stand for. Face it though, one group of experts "says" YES, another says NO, so I don't think that provides ammunition either way! More of a balance I'd say.I'm just interested to hear what us as a group of "uneducated anglers" believe, based on "the information provided to us."Oh, and Tom, do ya want mung beans, kidney beans, green beans, soya beans, butter beans, baked beans, lima beans, ....................................! It seems a shame to let this Topside steak go to waste though! {SMILIES_PATH}/tongue.gif
  11. Here's a subject that's been discussed many times, which even the experts can't agree on!Some say "NO", fish cannot feel pain in a manner in which us mammals recognise it, as their nervous system and cerebral cortex are not sufficiently developed, and instead, the fish merely "respond" to external stimuli. Don't take MY word for it though, coz that was the result found by James D Rose, a professor of zoology and physiology at the University of Wyoming, who has been working on questions of neurology for almost 30 years. He has published his report in the American journal "Reviews of Fisheries S
  12. Nope, not takin the blame for that one! Bream are strictly C&R for me these days!Must be around 30 years since I've tasted a Bream!
  13. Since when have you been a Marlin fisherman?
  14. Makes ya start to realise just why ya need such sharp hooks to get a good hookup, dont it!
  15. Dat'd be MY course of action! And when ya think about it, go up a reel size to about a 3000, and it wouldn't be a bad lil rod for snapper, flathead, salmon, etc, from the boat.Regardless, it gives you a good excuse to git into the tacklestore now and look for a 7' replacement stick! There's some mighty sweet one's to choose from now too! {SMILIES_PATH}/wink.gif {SMILIES_PATH}/grin.gif
  16. Unfortunately, being graphite, I don't think even Rob can repair this one. Graphite CAN be repaired, but there's very few places which will attempt it, and ya might have to end up at a tennis shop to have this work done, where they'll stick a graphite plug down the shaft to join the two halves.Ya might have to count ya losses on this one, and now call it ya new: 6'4" 6kg Ian Miller mini -raider boat rod.
  17. I don't think anyone's pointing the finger at tacklestores! We all realise they're currently in short supply within the industry, and we accept this!Gotta admit though, after hearing all the stories about cockles going interstate, going overseas to the seafood industry, and the huge export market developing for tablefare: this thought certainly crossed my own mind on more than one occasion!Alas, there aint diddlysquat we can do about it anyway, so mebbe just give em the benefit of the doubt, accept that the season finished early, and hope that next season turns out to be a bumper, for all ou
  18. I spent a heap o' cash on them lures! Aint no way I'm gonna go dunkin em into saltwater! {SMILIES_PATH}/sad.gif
  19. Shaun, I really dont know how you do it! I've been out strugglin each weekend just tryin to get a legal into the well, scratchin my head in frustration! no-one can knock you on ya efforts though!Instead of gettin a money order to pay my entry fee, would ya like me to just deposit it into your bank account directly and cut out all the messin around in between? {SMILIES_PATH}/cry.gifLazylure, sudden change of plans mate! Bring along ya Black & Decker cordless drill and a sharp drill bit! When you see me chattin wiv Shauno in the corner, hit his boat up big time! {SMILIES_PATH}/tongue.gif
  20. Been out scarin' em! {SMILIES_PATH}/sad.gifMight try again Friday, and possibly Sunday to battle the elements too!
  21. You suck!!! ps: bout time you showed up! {SMILIES_PATH}/grin.gif
  22. Bout time you showed up! {SMILIES_PATH}/tongue.gif
  23. T'is gonna be pretty involved, but I'm happy to follow this one up if ya like, coz this one's down my alley, and given that I also have a Chinese interpreter here if it comes to contacting the source! There could be more than just virus and bacteria involved too, especially if these cockles happen to be live (which I would seriously doubt).Dave if ya have the info at hand, can ya supply me wiv whatever you have, hopefully including the genus and species of these cockles, the importation certificate and the contact details of ya supplier please, then I can begin by contacting AQIS and SARDI rese
  24. No so!!!I've got a few mates down there hunting for their own, and they're currently raving about the numbers of cockles they're getting! What gives? We're told they're in short supply and there's none around down at Goolwa at the moment, yet the guys down there hunting for them are saying they're plentiful? Are the's pro now capitalizing, and misinforming us? That's some very interesting information, and it seems quite a stuff up on someone's behalf, coz our quarantine laws here are pretty strict and well enforced as a rule, and AQIS is generally on the ball!Another member here broached th
