  1. Bill Kelly is my most important boating/fishing teacher. It helped having the same boat but in particular it was easy for me to understand how much the man knows about "Cats" having built his first one on his mother's kitchen table and having only ever owned Cats! If you are up for a lifetime experience, I think you should at least once try going fishing with Bill from his Marion Bay Charter business, a truly awesome experience in anything over 20 knots wind!!!He has a "Never say Die" boating/fishing attitude, and you have a pristine example of somebody I will always aspire to in boating/fishi
  2. That is why I have moved into Videos, otherwise I am goint to star getting blamed for having members ran out of drinks in their own homes! Check my video channel outhttp://www.youtube.com/user/adricistyou might have to organize a "boys night in" soon, as I am planning on uploading lots more soonOpti

  4. Hi Andrew, I am realy happy with my Northstar M121 too. Great unit, very versatile and also the only one at the time I bought it that had Smartcraft integration. Now that the Navico group owns a great deal of the Electronics brands we will see a big mix of brands selling the same actual unit under different brand/model no ! Anyway, the Simrad unit above looks good but still would not integrate with my Engines. If I had 4 Stroke Suzuki or eTecs than it would be perfect! I still have my best two transducer on my boat that belong to the old Lowrance setup hence I have also kept the X16 which the
  5. waterboy, well said. I fully agree with your statement. I did not put it that way because I am not much of a land based fisho, and I suppose there it might have more of an impact. The reality though is that even there tides, barometers, winds, son, water clarity, temperature, etc. etc. all are linked to a specific location. And if you read carefully my article on Great Fishing attitude, you will notice how much I stressed the importance of correct anchoring! I can be anchored perfectly on a spot and fish it well on an incoming tide, but after the change of tide my anchored position will change
  6. I have different gear now on mine too! Remember that those videos are 15years old! ;)One day I will get around to do a video review of my current unit a Northstar M121 fully integrated via Smartcraft to the Optimaxes! It is actually exactly the same unit as the SIMRAD NX45 12 NavStation. Now, although I am very happy with this unit, I still have my X16 on board, and believe me, for our local conditions, nothing beats a well setup X16! The new units are ok for people that just want to switch them on and off and run them in Auto, I like to play with all the settings :woohoo: and the X16 allows
  7. This video highlights the importance of a good sounder and knowing how to read it in order to find individual larger targets.Enjoy,Optihttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eR9omwiKDDM

  13. Hi guys, more footage from my very large archive! I hope you all enjoy it as I have much more coming! I thought that rather than writing more I would upload more! How does the saying go? A picture is worth 1000 words? How many words is a video worth? Keep watching this section, I have lots of good stuff coming.Tight lines,Optihttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1Q7r-CzViw
  14. I always thought they had stuffed up big time with that move!!! I think they had a solid niche in the City, targeting lots of business people who have boats and can only dart out of the office for a quick break. Obviously the new owners had more cash than brain and took over a business without understanding its real target clientele! hence killed it!I am not going to miss them where the are but I did miss them when they left Pirie st.!As always, my $0.02,Opti
  15. Ausea, I see where you are coming from but I think there is more to it. It is not all about costs! In fact we could still alternate local weekly outing to the far and few long range trips down to KI and manage both. The reality is that, in order to do that, you also need something very special .... "time"!To me going fishing is something very special that I like to share with very special friends. These days it is becoming harder and harder for all of us with growing families to be able to leave everything behind with the wives. We all have kids playing district sport and when you have more th
  16. khany thanks for your welcome, is the word you are looking for "passionate"? I know what you mean with the 80series cruiser looking very inadequate!!! Today I don't tow my boat any more and I think I would not be allowed either. Back then I had a special permit with nominated routes, days and times of day. I also had to have Wide Load sign at the front and at the rear! I will tell you another hilarious story. The 80 series would only manage 120 km range with Full Tank and SubFuel towing my boat. That means 140 Liters if my memory serves me right!Opti
  17. It sounds like you have a great attitude too, Shane. I do something similar with my lad and generally when we go out from Adelaide locally it is when we take a few kids out. Best fan we have with them is Crabbing, and then we try catching a few whiting.Of course because of the distance we travel we like to catch our limits but the fish I enjoy the most catching is the first of the over the limit, that I kiss and say "See you next time mate" and release him back. It has now become a regular event on my boat! Everyone has to do it! Catching the limit is also a way of keeping us challenged. We ne
  18. Thanks heaps Shane for the great feedback!I had a guy in 2004 following us all the way from Adelaide to KI. He had a Kevlacat 3000 with inboard. He was chasing us via his Radar 5-8 NM behind and as it was blowing a bit, 15 knots southerly, we could not see him visually. But I could see on my Radar someone following us. As we cruise quite fast I knew who it was, as he had been hanging around my boat every time we returned from KI asking questions, checking our catch, etc. If I slowed down, he would slow down, If I'd go faster, so would he. Simply unbelievable! As I got a few miles of my spot I
  19. From memory we put him on ice because we had to kill him first to get him out of the pot! Once out and now dead we put him on ice. Later on we realized we could not keep him and chucked him back! I did not mention the all story in the article! ;)Thanks for having given me the opportunity to clarify this, really appreciate it, I owe you one,Opti
  20. It was never deleted here mate! but I know what you mean!Cheers,Opti
  21. Just making the most of what Nature has given us! Did I mention that I also love women! Opti
  22. Honestly I do not get any issues on the water on my boat, but this is because I do spend a considerable amount of my time looking, checking and maintaining things on land prior to a trip.In this particular case, I had not been involved with the boat since we delivered it from Sydney in Jan. My friend/owner had told me that everything was ok and ready to go. Then disaster stroke multiple time and I had to cope with all the issues without having a great understanding of everything on board. And believe me, I am really good at rebuilding an engine, programming software, understanding electrical o
  23. Hi SuperThahn, and thanks for the input. I have never been in Coffin Bay and I have a few more questions:- How many Cray boat work out of Coffin roughly? I mean are there quite a few? If so that means no navigation at night during Cray Season!!! Which probably would suggest that we should plan the trip during the Off Season for Crays.I am not planning on going there with my boat mate! Would never even consider towing it there unless I was going to leave it there for a couple of years! and it that case I would have to drive the boat there by sea and the trailer without the boat on it by land!
  24. Hi ranger, and thank you for your other feedback.Yeahh she is a monster man, I am still not as happy bottom fishing from it as I am from mine, but we are gradually getting her setup nicely and she loves cruising in a big sea! I took her from Sydney to Adelaide in less than 3days + 2days stop in Apollo Bay! Great ride! I am planning a 1 week trip in the near future to Greenly and/or Pearson! Hopefully it will run smoother than this previous one! We had a few small issues and could not end up doing all we had planned to. I have now been onto things and the next one should be better.
