  1. now my alvey has fell over HUNDREDS of times on the rocks... but just once from the workbench which is 4ft tall...'DOH. i actually used it like this for 10 yrs, then decided i better do a patch up on it.it was still smooth and didnt cause any probelsms, thats why i left it as it was for so long.though it did catch my knuckles a few times when a fish ran hard.heres how i fixed it.

  3. turn up your speakers... THIS is the sound i love to hear...sorry about the lack of light... blown globe outside..
  4. this is the clip im talking about...it sits under the rod, not far from the reel seat.the line on an alvey comes from the bottom of the reel, clips over this clip, then it runs parrelell down the rod through all of the eyes.you wont find another alvey this colour... i painted it after the repair i did on it.its a ford falcon metalic blue hahahaa.automotive paint which is pretty tough, but its started to chip in small places...''this is the first eye on my snyderglas 5163...its approx half way along the lentgh, and is over sized... i think its big for when your casting.
  5. Kelvin wrote: have to agree with that... you can chuck lures, but damn it hard work retrieving them time and time again.alvey make a 2 speed reel though... ive seen it on youtube but dont know prices on itthat would make lures an easier option to use.
  6. im very biased...alvey 650c.had it 20 yrs almost...i DID break it though, but i fixed it as well.took a huge chip out of it when it fell off the workbench onto the floor.mate... i love it...once mastered,( pretty easy) you will find ( i did anyway) that your casting INCREASES a lot.as the reel is turned sideways (sidecast)there is little resistance when casting...nothing turns causing friction, reducing the cast.YOU NEED A SPECIAL ROD THOUGH. it has a low mount reel seat, and the first eye on the rod is in the middle of the letgh, and is also larger in size.there is also a clip down near the r
  7. or you crack the back window, and poke it out of there with the butt in the front well.
  8. heres the question..this rod ive had almost 20 yrs...got it when i got the alvey.tough as nails, and ive recently done it up and looks like new again.BUT...ive always been led to believe it was a 7 wrap...but after reading a few posts on this forum, im not so sure now.snyderglas 6153 (7w)the (7w) i took to be meaning a 7 wrap, but would the 6 at the start be the number of wraps, followed by the letgh of 153 inchs?if its a 6wrap, what does the (7w) mean?

I like the fact that there are so few moving parts and, like you say, it can just be dunked in the water for a clean. Is it easy to learn to cast one? I may have to borrow one sometime and give it a go.didnt take me long to get the hang of it....i went to a school oval, tide sinker to the mainline...and threw the hell out of it.i love my alvey...its me reel of choice.winding in can be a pain sometimes is its well out there, but you get used to it.you need a special rod for an alvey, but its one o

  14. for those that have never seen the working of an alvey..THATS IT... there is a few drag washers, a couple of caps to keep the oil in, and not much else.the triangle thing is the ratchet... and when it goes off...it will wake you from the deepest of sleeps...nothing like the scream of an alvey...loud as hell.
  15. thats the trouble with the rocks...you get a snag, all you can do is lock it up tight, hold the spool and walk away from the water until something snapps...usually just the sinker, but often the whole rig.ive even had the line snap at the rod tip before.mostly only happens on high tides, when im well back and casting normally where i stand at low tide.but after years of faithfull use, i reckon she still has another 10 yrs at least in it.ive been meaning to buy a new alvey...didnt like the lever drag alvey a mate had.... the lever spins with the reel, so makes it harder to adjust on the go than
  16. but when spool is fitted, it still spins the other way...which it shouldnt.pulled apart again, then found the probelm.the reel is close to 20 yrs old, used sometime 3-7 days a week, and the brass on top of the lock is a tad worn.so when the spool is on , and nuts tightened, it pulls it away from the locking gear.so i borrowed a stainless washer from the drag system, placed it between the 2 surfaces, and shes good to go.will hit the tackle shop in the morning for a replacement washer so i can put the drag washer back in its rightful place.
  17. hmmmm... all seems ok inside...its locking in without the spool...as per the pics.1st pic shows it if free mode2nd is when it locked in.
  18. davidm#2 wrote: should be an easy fix...will tackle it tomroow... the good thing about them is there is hardly nothing to go wrong.i reckon its a clip... stuff it... im going out now and pull it apart...pics soon.
  19. plankton wrote: you aint seen me cast an alvey then have you...ive also got an abu7000, the alvey PISSES on it for casting.and from the beach? thats what they were built for.if they fall over, wash em IN the surf, and carry on.doesnt need gears... one turn i reckon will be more line retrieved than an abu
  20. WAAAAAH.... i broke it...it wont lock in when winding in, and it spins backwards.havnt pulled it aprt yet, but i reckon a spring has snapped or let go somehow.

  23. biased opinion here..but for surf work... alvey wont let you down in the gritty sand.if it falls over ( and it will) rinse it off in the surf if you dont have fresh water, and carry on fishing.mines on a snyderglas, 650c alvey with 25lb line.vb4me and sandywhiting seen me cast it out yesterday... i will let them tell you how far the cast went.all i will say is it goes further than an abu7000 or any eggbeater ive used.
  24. maybe try some snyder line... thats good stuff with not a lot or stretch in mono.dont know if they do a braid or not.i cant use braid from the rocks...the rocks just rips it to pieces.
