  1. Looking at the fins it can be either a Herring or Minnow SpeciesCaught in Freshwater narrows it down to an Australian SmeltNative TroutMountain Trout MinnowDefinitely has the markings of a Native Trout or MinnowBut the white spots are confusingI would definitely get in contact with the Museum or PIRSA

  2. Was thinking about heading to Coffin Bay for the Fishing CompBut1st Grandchild is soon to be so have to stay closeSo it could be local or a quick river day tripThen AgainI can go fishing almost anytime so i might just stay home and wait out the Easter Madness until its over

  3. Was talking to a guy at the St Kilda boat ramp yesterdayHe had a bucket full of fish and shark scraps he had bought for crab baitApparently from The Fish Factory for around $2 a kiloHe had never used carp for crabs so i swapped him a carp head for some scraps.I did notice though that with every pull i was getting more crabs with the Carp baitWas talking to a mate last night and he tells me its because the carp STINK a lot more than sea water fishSecondly does anyone use those plastic crab bait holders and does it restrict the amount of bait the crabs stealA few times yesterday i had to re-bait every 15 - 20 mins. Especially with the cutlets Ive now run out of carp so ill have to plan a trip to the Murray and re-stock the freezerORIf anyone is going carp fishing and don't want them. Let me know and ill take them off ya hands (I'm in the northern suburbs)

  4. I use willy and found that site to be okLast Tuesday for example most TV reports winds of 15kph + seas up to 1.5mtrsWilly said light winds and 0.2mtr swellWilly was rightAlso i look at weather radars and mapsOver time you can predict by the isobars when i could be rough and when it could be calmA TRUE story was back in the eightiesThe first wet Australian F1 Grand Prix in AdelaideMyself and a Mate who owned a sports store in Rundle St met in the street at 7am Sunday before starting workThe forecast was for a sunny day with the occasional light showerWe both noticed the clouds as we were coming to work and the discussion once we met was the weather. We both knew the forecast was going to be wrong and we both anticipated it was going to bucket down.Buy as many umbrellas as you can i told him and he agreedAs i was running his second store by the Stag Hotel i didn't see what he bought until it landed on my lap1000 rain poncho'sBut it was still sunny, but we both knew it was coming A few hours later it hit and it bucketed down. I sold 1000 within 1hr and was screaming for more5000 more arrived and it was mayhemAll the retailers couldn't believe how we predicted the weather as they scurried to take advantage of the situation. But my mate had bought the supplier out of all his stockAt the end of the day we were soaking wet and had sold 20,000 cheap plastic poncho's and rain coats between us at $5 a pop and they cost my mate $1eaA retailer approached us at the end of the day and asked us how did we know about the rainWe both just said we were FISHERMENAnd ill never forget one 10 year old kidHe saw something in my shop worth $400 and liked itSo he bought 1 poncho for $5Minutes later he was back and bought 2Then 4, then 8, then 16 and so onAt the end of the day he walked in and bought the $400 item with his dad CASHHe was re-selling the poncho's for $10 inside the trackOne Smart Kid

  5. I saw a photo of waders on a person on a boat and it bought back some not too happy memories(Sorry Rickster No Disrespect)I have a full size set and they have been sitting in the shed and only ever get brought out if im fishing Murray Backwaters on a freezing cold dayI have seen guys washed in at Browns Beach, West Cape, & Roystens Head and trust me it was touch and go getting these guys out the water. Once they fill up and get suction it is almost impossible to get them off.The guy at Browns was gone for all money and if wasn't for a quick thinking guy who dived in and cut up his waders with a knife to let the water flow through, he wouldn't be with us todayI still see guys wearing them wading in the shallows at local beaches when its calm and i cant see a major problem there but its the guys i see in surf beaches and near deep water that scare the crap out of me

  7. Very interesting and eye opening points you make blue goose.Out of curiosity if an item in Australia cost say $1000 but you could get the same product from America for $800 what would you do?

Depending on the item. For example if it was say something that included an OZ warranty and follow up i would buy from OZ but i would be doing a bit of haggling and hope to get 10% off at least.Remembering it has now become a bigger ticket item and the savings difference is minimal I just bought a handheld GPS for $180 from the USThe same GPS in OZ, say j.appleseed is around the $400 - $500 markOk it doesnt have Oz Maps but i only bought it to save and find fishing GPS marks.Down the track i will add oz marine mapsSo i saved at least $200. If it breaks down and warranty wont cover it ill just get another.
  8. As has been mentioned in a previous similar thread' date=' MARKUP does not equal NET profit. Far from it :S While we talking about buying stuff cheap O/S, on exactly the same principle wouldn't it be great if we could import O/S tradies and pay them the same wage as their country of origin. Pay Australian taxes and we get much cheaper houses etc....just a thought.[/quote']Have you ever tried to call some of the big companies, Telstra, EtcIts mostly overseas call centers who pay pittance
  9. I have two moments i cant separateThe first was when i was a younger fishing with my parents, grandparents, uncles & aunties and sister on the Murray at our then regular spot.We started to pack up and call it a day when my Grandfather hooked a Redfin, then another and another. Within minutes there were four of us hooking Redfin on bare silver hooks and as we landed them there was someone handing us another rod while they took the fish offWe caught over 50 in 30mins of mayhem and then as suddenly as it started it stopped. The second was last yearSitting at the end of my landing at Mannum at first lightFishing was slow but watching the Pelicans glide through the fog, the noise of the Kookaburras, all the wildlife and the fish jumpingAbsolute Heaven and Nature at its bestHow good does it get ????

  10. Interesting TopicI recently purchased a variety of fishing and boating items online (Ebay) at a cost of 40 - 50% less that what i could have bought from a shopBUT waitThe seller wanted $45 for postage but stated they were in Adelaide. So i asked if i could pick up and they agreed and gave me the addressIT WAS A LOCAL TACKLE SHOPSecondlyI have worked in a Tackle and Sporting shop110% is the standard markup for most retail outletsBut depending on the store it can be more or less depending on the competitionWhere i worked there was a minimum of 110% to as much as 2000%Say a supplier has a large amount of surplus stock, they would offer us that stock for say $5 an item, yet that item sold for $100. Did we sell it for $10 NO. We reduced the price on SALE to $80 and made a profit of $75 on every itemWhen i stopped working there i started a small internet tackle business and is wasn't long before i had an account with Shakespeare Aust. Selling on Ebay and all items were covered by warranty. I was also able to source out other products here in Australia and overseas. One supplier offered me hooks and swivels at 1c ea as they were closing down. I bought 100,000. I sold heaps but still kept 10,000 for myself. Enough to last me a lifetimeThe business is no longer. Even i couldn't compete with the Asian internet sellers ThirdlyWhen the gun laws changed and the govt offered a buy backPeople took the offer and got average retail value for their gunsBut what we did was disassemble every gun as parts.By doing this the Govt paid 4 - 5 times what the gun was worthThere was so much profit to be made that the owner of the shop bought every gun he could get his hands on. He even advertised and sent one guy to Thebarton to buy guns from people handing them in.He made an absolute killing I also know Albert Bensimon. (Shiels Jewellers). His words to me onceQUOTE. Almost everything in my stores are at 1000% markup as it is mostly imported from AsiaIn summaryIf i saw something in a shop for $100 with a warranty and saw the same item online at $30. I would buy online every time. So if it breaks in 10mths ill just buy another and still be in front

  11. We had a similar issue at Mannum over New YearsThese guys in jet skis kept whizzing buy speeding and deliberately coming close to upset our fishingBUTThe son in law and his mate are crazy and pulled out sling shots with what i thought was marbles So every time they flew past they peppered them and hit the mark most timesEnded out he wasnt using marbles but paint ballsSure made a mess of them and their skisThey were not happy when they eventually saw the mess of paint and came back to protest. But they soon took off when the son in law started shooting at and hitting a ferry sign with real marbles and told them next time that is what they would be usingSo next time take a sling shot along fishing and a bag of paint balls

  12. I posted this in another topic but thought it needed it own TopicHere is an example of what it would have cost me to go out from StKilda last weekFuel from home and return $4.00Boat Ramp Fees $6.50Bait at Tackle shop prices, Cockles 1 @ $15kg ($15.00), Carp 3 @ $5.50 ($16.50),Boat Fuel @ 75c KM (15km @ 75c) $11.25Total $53.25Boat Costs $20.00 ($20pw for Reg, Ins & Maint)TOTAL $73.25Now i bagged out on Crabs8kg @ $25.00 (Fish Factory Prices)Total $200.00TOTAL $126.75 (Profit)NOTE. This is just an example if i hadn't prepared and bought bait at tackle shop prices. Luckily i had purchased cockles a lot cheaper and had brought home carp from the river. So i saved a bit thereSHIT I JUST REALIZED BOATING AND FISHING AINT CHEAP
