I like to use a good swivel and attatch the jig to that. It saves the leader tying direct to the split ring and avoids any chance of the split ring edges cutting into the leader. Some people like to have the assist hook connected directly to the swivel and then the jig attatched to the swivel independant of that. I think the idea is that if the split ring on the jig fails your hook is still on the line. Ive never done this but the theory of it sounds good. Dont know about the rubber band trick, I havent tried that one.

howdy adamw, there are many different variables to rigging up a knife jig mate.i personally run wind on leaders, tie a bimini in the braid and then attach the wind on via crossloop connection.i usually will run a 130lb minimum leader also.this gives good abrasion resistance and is handy to grab onto when a big fish is at the boat.when attaching leader material to jig itself i will run a ball bearing swivel or a heavy duty barrel swivel to a heavy duty split ring.then i will attach an assist hook which will have a solid ring incorporated into it already.this way allows quick jig changes and no need to retie to your swivel all the time.all the terminal tackle can swing and do whatever it likes.tie a knot from your windon to the swivel or a flemish eye and crimp as i do.another benefit of this is it allows rig changes to bait rigs without cutting knots and so forth.all you do is premake rigs which incorporate a solid ring to allow fitment to the split ring.this way you maximise fishing time.you can also buy premade jigs already made up if your just starting out, some people also just use a solid ring and a split ring too which also works quite well.sorry to baffle you with all this info but jigging is my thing.most good tackle shops will offer good advice and everyone has their own ideas on this.get on youtube and you will find heaps on this subject.the guys in taiwan from jigging master are probably at the top end in this department and tie some wicked knots that are mind boggling, enough rambling  ,hope this has helped you mate. ;) cheers adamibinfishin

Like any lure a good tip is to buy the best quality jigs you can afford.Stear clear of anything made by sea-rock or similiar really cheap jigs as they're generally just painted sinkers and don't produce much of a fish attracting action. The sea-rock zero dropper is not too bad though.Probably the best value for money jigs are those made by Smith in the 250gm to 400gm range. The Smith Nagamasa, Jacknife and Side Thruster (hehe sounds like a porno!)all work really well and from memory are are between $25 - $30 from ray annes.I've personally found pink/silver and pink/lumo to be the most consistent colours.

Adamw,After years of trial and error jigging for Samsons and Kings and a lot of reaserch and advice from tackle experts this is how we now rig our customers up. I am not saying it is only way to do it but if done carefully and properly it's hard to beat.We start with a 50 turn bimini twist in your mainline (braid). A quality wind on leader is then attached and wound onto the reel. At the end of your wind on we crimp a suitable size quality ball bearing swivel. Once you have completed this attach a suitable size Owner split ring to the swivel. You will need a quality set of split ring pliers for this. Your choice of jig is then attached to the split ring as is your assist hook. A couple of things to watch when attaching your hook to the split ring is 1 hook size.Make sure your hook is compatible with the jig, you don't want your hook to be able to foul on the jig in any way. This can occur if the gape of the hook is similer to the width of the jig. What I tend to do is try to use hooks with quite a large gape. The other thing to watch is that once the hook is on the split ring and sitting next to jig it is pointing out. It is hard to explain but some hooks are designed to be attached only one way.Length of the assist hook is also important. Long jig-longer assist hook. Short jig-shorter assist hook. Once you get jigging always check your jig and wind on every 3 or 4 drops and if you are having no success don't be afraid to change jig colours. This can be easily achieved by removing only the jig from the split ring not the hook unless you want to change sizes.I will try to attach a photo for you. Hopefully it works.Posted Image

Great Explanatioon AFC

You mean with a hook with a bent shadt' date=' the point can lay against the lures body, as against turning it 180 degrees so it points outwards ?Top looking hodlum too :woohoo:  [img']http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr321/AFC_2008/Live%20aboard%202011/nov189.jpg[/img]
