SneakyOne 1
Hi, I'm new here, from Melb. Hoping to see general consensus and comparison on two light surf rods (or if you wish to suggest others). Looking at either Daiwa SeaBass 96ML 4-8kg 35g cast and Shimano Maikuro II 9" 6-8kg. This one is rated to 75g cast - not sure how? Basically a Med-light for flicking SP / metal and some bait as well. Already have a 385g Fin-Nor LT40 reel so thinking balance is a factor too. Any input is appreciated, thanks :)
Knackers 696
I pretty sure I have the Shimano Sppedmaster in 8-12 Kg. Nice little rod use if for lures and bait off the beach and also jetty fishing for squid chucking jigs as far as I can. I imagine the Maikuro would be similar.
SneakyOne 1
8-12kg rod for chasing squid? I guess squid wouldn't know haha Think I'll settle for the Seabass 96ML for now - if I start getting into the surf side of things, will get a bit more "serious" ie Sandstorm with a suitable reel. Kelvin 2,251
Both will be great. My mate has a Daiwa Seabass. Nice and light. Slightly softer action than the Daiwa Seajigger but half the price. I've had a play with the Shimano Maikuro range in store. They run K guides and feel nice and crisp and same price range as the Seabass
SneakyOne 1
The "moderate" action of Seabass is a bonus - planning to use this as a light bait / lure setup. Also have a 8'3" squid rod which is really light and crisp - will be used exclusively for lures to 25g and squid... Most of my fishing is done on a yak, so this is my light beach / rock pair for when I don't have my yak Kelvin
plankton 725
A bit of a late reply, but I have that 9'6" Seabass and it's a great little rod. I find it prefers to cast 20g, you can go a bit heavier but the rod won't be working its best. Daiwa often overstates the optimum casting range of their surf rods. But it will throw a 20g metal lure as far as one of those will go, and it's great fun catching salmon of all sizes due to the light weight.
