Shark_Fisho 1
hey all after surfing on the net I came across this story:While fishing at the Golden Gate Bank in Cabo San Lucas just before Thanksgiving 2008, Mike, the captain of the "Eureka" spotted a dead sea turtle floating on the surface. After maneuvering closer, it was apparent that the turtle had been wrapped in some sort of monofilament. Thinking that this could be another gill netting casualty, he retrieved his camera to document the find, as they often do. They gaffed the dead animal in order to bring it closer to the boat and found a Tiagra reel, with rod still attached just below. The name on the custom Aftco rod said "Mea Culpa". By coincidence, he knew a friend who had captained this boat in recent years, and so once back in port, contacted him. He found out that they had lost this rod and reel on a jig strike almost 2 years ago to the day. The loss was recorded in the captains daily log book. Mike spent the next day cleaning up the rod and barnacles encrusted on the reel. He re-greased and re-assembled, re-spooled and took the set-up out the following day. Mike caught and released 2 marlin using that cleaned up reel and rod. Unfortunately there are no pictures of their catch but they said the AFTCO rollers and Tiagra reel worked flawlessly. The amazing thing is that no parts were replaced in the reel!Photos are below

But they replace them after every few mintues
coonta kinta 1
Not sure I believe this. After two years floating around in the sea, that is all the barnicles on the rod, and there was very little corrosion on the reel.Either they are extreemly corrossion resistant or its fiction. EddieV 0
And if you were out trying to catch Marlin which you presumably have the gear for already why would you use a reel you found in the water yesterday even if you cleaned it up? Why would you take this risk?
