I like to use a good swivel and attatch the jig to that. It saves the leader tying direct to the split ring and avoids any chance of the split ring edges cutting into the leader. Some people like to have the assist hook connected directly to the swivel and then the jig attatched to the swivel independant of that. I think the idea is that if the split ring on the jig fails your hook is still on the line. Ive never done this but the theory of it sounds good. Dont know about the rubber band trick, I havent tried that one.

howdy adamw, there are many different variables to rigging up a knife jig mate.i personally run wind on leaders, tie a bimini in the braid and then attach the wind on via crossloop connection.i usually will run a 130lb minimum leader also.this gives good abrasion resistance and is handy to grab onto when a big fish is at the boat.when attaching leader material to jig itself i will run a ball bearing swivel or a heavy duty barrel swivel to a heavy duty split ring.then i will attach an assist hook which will have a solid ring incorporated into it already.this way allows quick jig changes and no need to retie to your swivel all the time.all the terminal tackle can swing and do whatever it likes.tie a knot from your windon to the swivel or a flemish eye and crimp as i do.another benefit of this is it allows rig changes to bait rigs without cutting knots and so forth.all you do is premake rigs which incorporate a solid ring to allow fitment to the split ring.this way you maximise fishing time.you can also buy premade jigs already made up if your just starting out, some people also just use a solid ring and a split ring too which also works quite well.sorry to baffle you with all this info but jigging is my thing.most good tackle shops will offer good advice and everyone has their own ideas on this.get on youtube and you will find heaps on this subject.the guys in taiwan from jigging master are probably at the top end in this department and tie some wicked knots that are mind boggling, enough rambling ,hope this has helped you mate. cheers adamibinfishin
