20 1/4" (about 51-52cm) when fishing the hot water at the power station 39-40 years ago on a freshly pumper tubie. Nearly lost it-went like a steam train and I thought i had a mully and was waiting for it to ease up before the second run lol Released it as Dad always told us to let the big rare buggers go as theyre the breeders and so anything over 15-16" (approx 45cm) was released

Well ive done it-ive bought some braid. I bet all you braid specialists are hitting your foreheads and thinking oh no another beginner with dreams of grandeur and full fish bucket  Youre also thinking what brand, weight etc. With shallow pockets i forked out for 300m of Sea Lion 10lb (dia 0.07) - probably not one of the better professional ones but a blokes gotta start somewhere :c So this month i'm having a go with it down yorke's way and will let everyone know how it did/didnt go  Now all i have to do is get the bloody stuff onto my reel (yep i'll use mono filler) as tight as possible-interesting to see how i go as help is non existant  but perseverence is one of my few attributes-or was that pig-headedness?? As i said earlier this month ive never caught a bloody thing on squidgies etc so this is my next step as im determined to make a go of this fishing genre.

wow the tide must be moving in on the finish time for the competition as the waters white with frenzied fishing folk bustling for a position within the squidgie stakes

rattle lures are a good option. I only fish where i can score light on the water from jetties or a nice full moon. My first mully was a night catch using a simple brass lure at torrens island

Mine arrived today-and as usual heaps of top stuff to read and some knockout pix

Yeah but after a few busted up traps i decided to downgrade  Besides they were buggers to skin
Geez Spog did ya trap Dinosaurs too??? :ohmy:I know a very cluey guy (a veterinarian) who has just gotten into SPF (specific pathogen free) organic rabbit farming' date=' as he believes rabbit is set to be the next big thing.Since the avian influenza scare it appears asia is looking towards other good sources of protein apart from poultry' date=' rabbit is a very lean meat, easily produced and readily available capable of feeding an ever growing population. His rabbits sell for $15.50 apiece, he has had overseas interest in .establishing SPF rabbit farms, and is currently seeking investors for what looks set to be a multi-million dollar international venture. Not bad considering they were a pest we used to shoot, and considered poor mans food you could buy in the pub from the local shooter at the grand price of 3 for $2.[/quote'']Yeah we used to trap them for their pelts for a whopping 1 penny per six lol -

bloody hell-i bet that bugger glows in the dark lol

Mango i was looking at the enviromental impact rather than predatorial one. 40 years ago we were fishing the murray and it was full of reddies and cod-which were in turn full of reddies. We caught monster cod back then and the decline mainly started to show once carp settled in. ergo i think reddies are only a minor pest and not the major problem for river species

Do you regularly fish in the river Murray? ......yesHow often do you fish in the Murray?.......monthlyHow long have you fished in the Murray?.......40 yearsDo you ever target Murray Cod? .........not for many years Have you ever caught a Murray Cod, or seen one caught?....yesHow many Cod do you think there are today compared to ‘pest’ species in the river? (highlight)...Very Few Few Average Plenty Abundant.Do you feel that Murray are fine, endangered or critically endangered?....improving-fineDo you think the necessary steps are being taken to improve their numbers and maintain the species?...noHow big do you think the impact on Murray Cod is from the introduced species such as carp or redfin?...redfin-nil. Carp-plentyWhat do you think the biggest threat to native Murray Cod is? Water QualityDo you think the South Australian government is doing enough to ensure the Murray Cod’s survival? NoWhat sort of methods and actions would you like to see employed by authorities to boost the numbers of Murray Cod?continue catch and release, restocking regularly ,target carp, On a scale of 1-10 how important is immediate action to increase fish numbers? the rivers running perfect for breeding and we've only got a small window of a couple of years to get it on the go

Ive been using alveys for about 40 years and have never had a problem. Theyre great low maintenance, easy to use and no hassle with exploding when battling a big fish. Always make sure you "tie" your line onto the real before winding on line (i use a double loop-less pressure when you get spooled so a bust off is less likely) I have taken to using an alvey open runner on my heavy sports and my beach rod . Found it handy when i hooked up on a couple of rays. To get into casting i would just practice on an oval and see what suits you better. You could use the casting style illustrated in the alvey guide book but i have a different cast that i use that is comfortable for all rods rather than "alvey" style ones. If youre not using a "drag" version be aware of the reel spin as a big hit will cause sore knuckles and hand. Also a surprise run may cause the odd finger cut but you'll get used to it. Cheers and all the best and for me Alvey is the go
