  1. I've always found jetstar's service to be excellent. Best of all the airlines i think.Yeah wouldn't go on tiger even if it was free.

Their service may be good, until you have a problem or unusual requirement. Then they are the worst. After all the drama and complete lack of service provided by Jetstar one time I refuse to use them ever again. If I fly anywhere local I try to book on Virgin. They have always had the most friendly and supportive customer service out of all the airlines for me.
  2. Well I don't have any plans for the long weekend since my job has decided that it would be good for me to fly out on the Sunday to Florida for a month for some knowledge transfer activities and to assist on a project out there. And as a bonus it looks like I might be there for a team building exercise that they are trying to organizing with a game fishing charter :woohoo:Really hope enough of the people over there sign on to it to get it off the ground, 3 have so far and they need 8 or so.

  3. Thanks for the ID,I'm more a sandy beach fisher so I'm not that familiar with the rock and reef species.Wouldn't call them a pain since there was nothing else biting for the day and at least the wife got to catch something. We were not planning on keeping anything for the day anyway so any bites were good for a bit of fun.

  4. Just wondering if anyone knows what species this is?Posted Image04062011068.jpgCaught a couple of them at Rapid Bay Jetty toward the shore end of the jetty on a whiting rig with cockles. Was pretty quiet down there otherwise, except for the damn crabs stealing the bait and dragging into weeds/rocks.Brilliant day to be out for a drive and fish though.

  5. Kon,When calibrated correctly for sea level variation and examined over historical periods the ARGO bouy system shows warming exactly as expected. The claims that it is cooling were throughly disproved as cherry picking of the data from poorly calibrated data sets.Levitus 2009CO2 solubility does decrease at the oceans warm. Thats one of the worrying things since it means the oceans will reduce the amount of CO2 it is currently absorbing from the atmosphere (it currently absorbs around half of all human emission). The directly measured ocean acidification exactly in line with increasing atmospheric CO2 that demonstrate that human emissions are directly driving observed oceanic acidification.Ocean Acidification: A Critical Emerging Problem for the Ocean SciencesIt is especially worrying as atmospheric CO2 levels are still out of balance with dissolved CO2 levels so there is still more acidification to occur as it slowly moves into equilibrium with atmospheric CO2 and dissolved CO2.They have also done studies on slightly less cuddly creatures. Such as shellfish in CO2 levels projected (not predicted, projections carry forward current trends, not make guesses on where future things will be). The results are not nice and indicate that the very base creatures on the food chain will be hit hard as they struggle to make their calcium carbonate shells which they use to protect themselves.Impact of elevated CO2 on shellfish calcification

  6. My concern would be if it isn't a silver perch but is an illegal exotic release of some form of grunter, be it leathery, sooty or jade perch (Barcoo grunter) from a private aquarium or aquaculture tank.Wouldn't be able to survive too long or breed in our cold waters but would be worrying that someone is happy with dumping their aquarium or tank fish somewhere.Might be worth seeing is some of the fish identification experts at PIRSA are able to identify it. You could call the FISHWATCH number (1800 065 522) and see if they have an email address you could forward the picture to.

  7. With those spots it looks like a jade perch to me.Posted ImageThats a picture of a jade perch vs a silver perch. Jade perch has the spots.Jade Perch is a fancy name for Barcoo grunter.Could be a Leathery Grunter:Posted ImageSimilar in appearance. But Leatheries are regarded as a very poor eating fish while jape perch are rated quite highly. Both are native to Queensland and Jade Perch is becoming a very popular aquaculture species across Australia due to their diet, behavior, growth rates and eating qualities (including the highest Omega 3 levels of all fish tested, nearly 3 times that of salmon). They don't do too well in cool waters though, whereabouts is the carp pond where it was caught? Might have been a dumped culture fish from someones backyard pond system.

  8. Mango i was looking at the enviromental impact rather than predatorial one. 40 years ago we were fishing the murray and it was full of reddies and cod-which were in turn full of reddies. We caught monster cod back then and the decline mainly started to show once carp settled in. ergo i think reddies are only a minor pest and not the major problem for river species

Carp are a direct correlation but not necessarily a direct causation though. Lot of people misunderstand correlation and causation.Carp do well in rivers when there is low flow, few snags, high algae growth and plenty of mud.Murray cod do well in rivers where there is sustained periods of high flow, lots of snags and low algae growth and mud.Since the river has been managed flow levels have dropped massively, snags have been all but eliminated, farming practices has drastically increased the silt load and algae growth (and carp play a role in re-suspending sediments but its nowhere near as much as what a lot of people believe) coupled with the fishing practices that have only recently (relative to a Cod's lifespan) been stopped that decimated their numbers.Given the La Nina event we just had and associated flooding, the re-snagging efforts that are going on in the river and the introduction of more fish ladders and natural water flows I think we can expect to see a decrease in carp numbers, a comeback of many native species and hopefully a lot more cod.
  9. Spog777 ?????"How big do you think the impact on Murray Cod is from the introduced species such as carp or redfin?...redfin-nil. Carp-plenty"Nill?!! You cannot be serious! My guess is that you submitted an answer based purely on emotion. The redfin is a highly efficient predator....

Redfin are a highly efficient predator which could prey on young cod but the larger ones would be fairly safe.Carp have a big impact on Murray Cod. Since the massive decline in natives they are one of the main prey species keeping them fed! Without all those little carp around the place there would be a lot of hungry cod indeed since the natives crashed due to river mismanagement. Other than that carp have very little impact on Murray Cod.
  10. One of the things you should check is the diameter of your braid to your leader. If the braid is substantially thinner than your leader it will tend to cut through it more often. To get around that double your braid up in a loop and then tie the double uni-knot from that.Got that tip from here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33FkvSZRkaQ

  11. Hi all' date=' cockling ban?? I am unaware of this ban, and I plan to do some cockling. When and where is the ban in place, ie. when can i go cockling[/quote']Its all over the PIRSA thread.Cockling on the Goowla beach recreational zone is prohibited until the end of the season due to elevated E.Coli levels. You can still get them on the other recreational beach they opened up a while back but thats a bit of a long drive away. You can find a map to it here:Recreational Cockling Zone from 28 Mile Crossing to Kingston
  12. I've never liked eating fish. But for as long as I can remember (and longer so my parents tell me) I've loved catching them. Its all about the relaxation in the open air and the adrenaline rush of finally getting something on the line.My wife loves seafood though so if I catch a good eating fish I occasionally take one home for her.

  13. Those wedgetails can be a right menace driving up and down the country highways.Driving to and from Coober Pedy always had to be careful and slow right down when I saw them feeding on roadkill in the distance and toot the horn at them to give them time to ever so slowly waddle off the road out the way.Once they have had a good feed they are not too eager to move and can do a fair amount of damage to your car if you hit em.

  14. Could have been injured by a piece of metal that got lodged in there and corroded away. You can get all sorts of colours from complex metal salts. My guess would be that's what happened and the salts have migrated through staining the flesh.

  15. A guide on how to get people to share good fishing spots with you:1) Ask nicely if anyone who knows a few good spots would mind taking you out with them next time they go.2) Make sure you bring all your own gear and a case of beer in appreciation.3) ...4) Profit!

  16. Don't know the exact regulations but I don't think there is any mandated exclusion zone around any jetty or wharf.According to Transport SA website the only regulations regarding jetties and wharves are that you need permission from the owner to moor to them and for government jetties and wharves you are not allowed to tie up to them for more than 4 hours without official signs indicating otherwise or proper permission from an authorized person.Transport SA Mooring Regulations for Jetties and WharvesOnly rules I know of from when I was getting my boat licence is that there is a speed limit of 4 knots within 30m of jetties, wharves and other boats. The boat licensing handbook doesn't say anything else about it other than that.Might be extra by-laws from councils and things regarding specific jetties though, I'm not sure about what those might be.

  17. B@K, the South Australian Fishers and Lifestyle party is not that new.SA Fishers and Lifestyle PartyIt has been around since 2007 contesting for a senate seat and last election got 0.73% of the vote. In the 2006 election as the Recreational Fishers Party they got 0.2% of the vote. So a pretty big positive swing so far.It seems to be more moderate than the Australian wide branch that is on a joint ticket with Shooters party in NSW and focused much more on fishing and lifestyle rather than other matters (such as the NSW shooters party jumping in against the carbon tax and in support of the coal industry, not exactly topics that really represent shooting and fishing now are they?) and focused on trying to maintain a sustainable fishing experience with minimal regulation and impact. For reference in the 2010 election: ABC Legislative Council ResultsThey are not likely to get a senate seat any time soon but how their preference flows go means they do have some impact on pushing their views. To get a seat in the senate next election they would need to get at least 1.2% of the vote which is not that unattainable but unlikely. The shooters party has typically out polled them in SA since they are not on a joint ticket which I think is somewhat strange since I think there are far more recreational fishers than shooters in SA. I suspect it needs better marketing which if these protests against the marine parks achieve could only be good for the party. For now they are the most aligned political party to recreational fishing issues.

  18. I just got the shimano telescopic rod's with carry bag. Since I live in an apartment without a shed to keep smelly fishing gear in space is a premium as I have to store it all on the balcony or in my car boot. They come in 6" to 12" range so I keep both a 6" for jetty and light stuff and a 10" for beach fishing.I never liked the multi piece rods because what are the chances of loosing a piece? Plus the telescopic ones I got came with a handy carry bag each for them making them easy to lug around.
