  1. SHARKBAIT...You can get some larger fish at Perry’s Bend as the water is deeper and mulloway like it there.Plus it has some good tidal movement.Posted ImagePosted Image

Need to get your GPS co-ordinates right mate, Perry's Bend is the BBQ area on River Road where the Onkastompa is held every year ;) Your mark is a very good fishing spot tho' as you very rightly pointed out :clap::clap:
  2. Let's clear up a few fallacies here fellas. In 1990 when I arrived in Aus the first of five wetlands right along the Onka were in the process of being built, they are all now complete and although the trash racks are an imperfect anti pollutant system, they are in place and the wetlands themselves do a good job of settling out storm-water pollutants where there were no wetlands before. Moreover, the new housing scheme by Perry's Bend had as part of its concession to build, the requirement for a storm-water pond now situated on the opposite side of Perry's Bend to catch run-off storm-water!Metro Meat Works, while it was running, was a disgusting pollutant of the River which would have killed, realistically, thousands of Native fish in its time of operation (I have personally reported these fish kills and seen DENR lifting 6X4 trailer loads of dead fish from the Old Noarlunga area!!)Old Noarlunga has forever and a day operated with septic tanks adding to pollution problems and has only in the last few years finally got a fully reticulated sewage system which has cleaned up the Onka considerably. Now we come to a real polluter, SA Water's River Road sewage settlement Lagoons (good marketing angle calling them romantic sounding Lagoons?)These Lagoons have leached ammonia for years into the Onka and people may remember in some years when the release of excess winter storm water from Mount Bold, combined with a high "King Tide" has seen these Lagoons fully inundated with the resultant sludge ending up in the River and out to the estuary.Thankfully these ponds are now going to be turned into a Bird Sanctuary, sourced with water from the River Road wetlands which will double filter storm-water running into the Onka in the future! (work has already commenced on this Sanctuary now that the site has been handed back to SA Water after the completion of the New Railway Bridge which intersects the Sanctuary.)So, back to our Poster's question, Would you eat fish from the Onka River? You decide, I know that Jopro might have second thoughts today tho' I'm certain that in the days of his youth it would definitely be a dodgy proposition ;) Sorry for bleating on so long fellas but the Onka is one of my very strong passions :woohoo:

  3. Complete waste of time in my experience!!That is one very shallow stretch of coastline without any decent gutters most of the year and no fish would be comfortable foraging in there until the surf dropped away.Additionally, there is so much weed in these conditions it's impossible to fish :ohmy:A different story entirely as the surf drops away. Killa time to be there, although the drifting remnants of weed on a big flowing tide can be a nuisance ;)

  4. i had the Rovex airstrike 30lb on a penn slammer and at first it wind knot'd continuously but after a couple trips it starting casting like a dream.. not sure if i put it down to how the guys put it on the spool or the line just wearing in abit.

Found exactly the same on my Shimano Sienna 2500 when I was tempted to overload the spool with it all being a bit new to me. As soon as the cut offs of the wind knotted bits brought the levels back again, the line operated as sweet as, even to this day :clap::clap:
  5. New to the whole braid thing... Was told the ROVEX VIROS was a top notch line...? Anyone using this brand and what you think of it?

Luv it to bits mate, used it in the salt and heaps in the fresh for more than 8 yearsand I might be a bit biased as I went from spiderline to this and never looked back :clap::clap: 8lb Rovex Braid for the fresh and 20lb for salt ;)
  6. Permanently discoloured water produces very similar colouration to this fish.My theory is that Mother Nature doesn't need to give this ambush predator much natural camouflage as it doesn't need it in murky environments.Do you know if the Vic lake is murky?

  7. Thanks all' date=' I'm going to go with SAFAA. :)[/quote']Don't you just hate bl**dy ACRONYMS    You may be talking about South Australian Fly Fishers Association? (SAFFA)Conversely, maybe South Australian Fresh Water Angling Association? (SAFWAA)
  8. keep it' date='make it a sanctuary, along its length place under water viewing in so everyone can see how well marine parks work with regards to the enviroment[/quote']Talk is of a Restaurant/Cafe on the end of it and a Sanctuary zone combined with access for SCUBA Divers and a ladder to bring it perfectly into line with the set-up at Port Noarlunga which has worked well for quite a few years now B)B)B) The rest of the Jetty could be for rec fishers, again, just like Port Noarlunga?:clap::clap: Also talk of a entrance fee for upkeep, but this is really all just speculation at this stage?
  9. WOW! This is obviously one very hot potato with lots of careful and well considered points raised. Good stuff guys, let's keep it rolling and be aware that I have alerted a few of my rec fishing contacts to the possibilities from getting a good outcome for not only rec. fishers, but also the many other interested stakeholders such as Conservationists, Educators Scuba Divers and don't forget your average citizen who likes nothing better than a stroll along one of SA's many public jetties on a pleasant day. This is a nice long jetty and one of the suggestions raised in today's Tiser was that of a cafe at the end of the Jetty? This would sit nicely with suggestions that the end of the jetty could be made into a Reserve to preserve the fish stocks and make a habitat suitable for other stakeholders/users?

  10. Nice work Jimbo and Tony.I managed this one at the weekend' date=' from a nice little dam. [img']http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx68/judgek/IMG_0006-3-1.jpg[/img]

Yep. just snatched the Trophy Leader away from the regular "Cod Boys" for the first time in many years    The battle is on :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: (Funny looking "Sensational Silver Perch" tho' Phil, :silly: :blush: )I think I'd be tempted to put that lunker Cod on it's own special post???Awesome effort mate B):d/
  11. Hi Guys,Just finished reading an article in the "Tiser" about all the proposed actions that are being bandied around about the "Stanvac" site, now that the Petroleum Company is committed to and has commenced, the rehabilitation of the site!Onkaparinga Council has been negotiating with various stakeholders and the thing that made me sit up was that the Jetty, which would be a massive fishing plus for the State's recreational anglers, is planned to be demolished, UNLESS, funding can be provided to make it into a viable asset to the Community??What do we think about mounting a campaign through the Forum and other media connections??Regards, tonyb.

  12. Honestly fellas, you would be bored rigid if you could guarantee hammering heaps of fish out wherever you went, no matter what the situation, or weather or your mood was on the day!!This thread reminds me of the story of the trout fly fishing addict who had spent his whole life devoted to his passion and was Internationally famous. When he died he rocked up at the pearly gates and the Boss asked him what would be his dearest wish and it would be granted him? The guy said that he'd never ever caught a 20 lb trout on a Fly and he would love to do that. So, the Boss takes him by the hand and leads him to the most magnificent English chalk stream, crystal clear, full of aquatic weed with prolific mayfly hatches going on as he approached it. Now said the Boss, you can only choose one fly and you can choose the very best quality tackle that you need. As they are talking a magnificent trout rises out of the water and sips a mayfly down before resuming its station behind a weed covered rock. The guy is quivering with excitement, his dream 20lb fish now well within his final grasp. He thanks the Boss for his kindness and hurriedly takes his leave, rushes down to the gently rippling river in the late afternoon summer sunshine and executes the most perfect cast he has ever done, it hits the huge trout right on the nose and the fight is on!The angler's heart is in his mouth, his excitement levels have never been as high, the trout leaps into the air, thrashes about in the weed vainly trying to shed the hook, the angler can't contain himself but slowly and surely the 20lb dream trout comes closer and closer until he slips the net under it and thanks his lucky stars that he has died and come to Heaven to achieve his lifetimes dream. The next day the Boss comes to see how he's getting on and the deflated angler tells him that he was so excited about catching his dream trout at first but then he found that another 20lb trout had taken up residence immediately behind the weed covered rock so he caught that one too, then another trout turned up until he was finding it a tad boring after a while. The boss was unconcerned when the angler asked if he could try another spot on the river and catch some different trout with different Flies? You see the angler hadn't come to heaven, he'd come to HELL ;)

  13. cheers Tony' date=' i was going to send in the photo in my avatar for the brag board and one of me with a Tuna i caught with a 60lb jinkai leader. they were both taken with good cameras so hopefully he will publish them! :)B)[/quote']'Tis a crackin' pic mate, Shane is always on the look out for good copy for the mag
  14. i wanna send in a few photos for the brag board and the jinkai comp' date=' should i just send them to shane murton and see what he says?[/quote']shane@wildcoastfishing.com.auJust email that with some good photos attached aswell as the Subject being Brag Board Photo. They should get in no sweat! TT
Shane likes the pics to be a minimum of 500kbs and upwards for publishing quality guys.Camera on the phone rarely hacks it? In focus is a given ;)
  15. i understand that rules and regulations need to be in place. but seriously not being able to use certain types of hooks and wire traces during the day. i dont see what the problem is. sharks arnt being lured to the shores by fisherman. they have always been the its their domain and they will go where the food is. it dosnt really affect me at all because i own a boat and dont fish for sharks. just some of the things iv been hearing latley are a joke. fishing shouldnt be that hard in my opinion.

The alternative, of no regulation at all, is impossible to comprehend Damien
  16. Bottom line is that it is almost 100% the NITROGEN loads which are killing the grasses and these come directly from Waste Water plants and Penrice.
I dunno if I'm correct or not' date=' but I was of the belief that the outfall and silt from Penrice wasn't nutrient rich' date=' but was instead quite harmless sodium bicarbonate by-product, whose greatest effect was only slightly altering the pH of the surrounding water. ...........I'd like to be corrected if I'm wrong. What I AM aware of though, is that they entered a $1.5M clean-up back in 2006, to dredge around 150,000 cubic metres of silt from the port and remove their built up silt, where it is now taken to Penrice land for drying prior to being blended as landfill.[/quote'']http://www.chemlink.com.au/soda.htmhttp://www.penrice.com.au/pdf/100520%20CEDA%20Luncheon%20final.pdfAnd here we are, the second biggest mains potable water user in SA with a mere 7.5 gigalitres per year
