  1. Not sure about the trout personally mate but I have my sedona spooled up with 6lb fireline and a 9lb low stretch mono leader and find I can cast a mile with just a 10g slug on for salmon.I heard alot about the lower pound test braids being easy to get wind knots and line twist if you are new to braid. I think the place I read that also said 6-10lb would be a good starting point for using braid and then drop down once you get more used too it
  2. @bent87Is that one of the rollered ones? I was having a look at some of those just then and they don't look too bad. I know a spot to land some very large rays down here (pb at the spot is an 80kg smooth ray so far) and was thinking about getting one and giving it a serious work out. I've hooked an estimated 50kg+ eagle down there as well, spooled me with 400yards of 40lb braid running about 5kg drag in one run. Definitely an eagle though, no head shakes/tail beating and the run was far too fast to call it for a smoothy.@auseaYeah I'm actually surprised with these rods so far, The few reviews
  3. Hey guys, just wondering if anyone has any of these rods.I know a few mates who might be interested in fishing but aren't too sure as of yet so I bought a few of these rods to give them a try (I already have top range rods and reels so not looking for anything permenant, understand the whole you get what you pay for thing) and I've taken them out the back with my symetre on it and loaded it up and they seem to handle it quite well, have a decent curve in them. Had the drag locked (I think the drag maxes at 7kg on a 4000fj doesn't it?) and seemed to take it quite well. even tried a few quick je
  4. How much does he charge for the fishlog? assuming you mean the one from the fishsa site it doesnt seem to have a price listed, just had contact info for the creator@op fantastic job on the log mate, wait until you land your first 40cm+ whiting land based its an awesome feeling :cheer:
  5. Might order one in and give it a shot, looks like on that rig theres a standard size jig and a much smaller one. might help a bit more when the squid are more fussy.Comes pre rigged as the paternoster as well
  6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_DTRNF_7OATheres another video that shows one getting a bit better use, cameraworks not too handy but you can hear it pulling the drag. bigger fish then the first video so looks like they'd be capable of landing some larger fish. imagine a salmon trout on one of those
  7. I was having a look at motackle the other day at the squid jigs they have on offer and came across these paternoster squid jigshttp://www.motackle.com.au/fishing/lures/yamashita-light-egi-paternoster-rig-2-117.htmlHas anyone used them before? does it help increase your hook up rate when drifting over weed beds in shallower water or is it more for deep water to get that extra weight. Also are double hook ups common with this?

    t shirts

Love the design on the shirts but one thing I think might be a rather nifty idea is maybe setting something up with the company you're getting the shirts from (or a local embroidery place e.t.c) would be the option to have your strikehook username printed down the side of the arm on a jumper/on the back. as a way for fellow strikehook members to be able to recognize eachother if they happen to bump into eachother.Would also look quite good if you make it somewhere that would show up in a photo a member took with a fish, like on the collar of a polo shirt just as a more personalized sort of way
  9. You could give fish tails/heads a shot. Any whiting you fillet rather then putting the heads in for berley just cut a bit behind the head to get a bit of extra meat on (although its no big difference if you don't) and rig up the head, alot harder then the body and doesn't get crabbed/stripped off the hook as easily. squid heads are alright as well but if you catch some squid you can take the tubes and actually put a fish fillet inside it to get both tastes in the water then hook the tube making sure you get the fillet as well and that will hold the fillet inside the tube and most pickers will
  10. Cheers I reckon I might give the samaki a shot, looks quite decent for the price and not bad on the eyes either
  11. You could buy 2 stellas for the price of this reelhttp://www.motackle.com.au/fishing/reels/monoblock-grigio-titanio.html1.9 grand for a 14lb/120m reel anyone??
  12. Gentlemen I introduce you to the pen fishing rods.a telescopic rod that folds up into a pen shaped "container" the same size as a pen when folded and extends to roughly 3 foot long, comes with a palm sized reel (spinning baitcaster or overhead) and apparently holds 180 metres of 51lb lineA video showing someone using one of them in deep water catching a decent sized fish for how small the rod is, not the best audio but gives a good demonstration of the rod in actionhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9bLa-hy6UYAnyone keen for a pen rod comp? :silly:
  13. would of edited this into the first post but left it too long, forgot to mention scent on the plastics. It all depends on how you're fishing them, a fast moving plastic the scent won't make too much of a difference until a fish gets near it or actually grabs it, the scent will help them to hold on but its not entirely necessary.if you have a slower moving bait/fishing it from a rod holder (i.e worm for whiting or squid for snapper) then the scent will help to create a sort of berley trail in the water, releasing that smell out so a fish nearby will come in for a closer look (if they havent seen
  14. use the lightest jighead possible for weather conditions/depth for the best action on the jighead. bright colours work best on bright days and darker colours are better for overcast days to cast more of a shadow against any form of light thats available (slight sunlight/moonlight for example) retrieve will change on every different soft plastic and fish targetted, not to mention what "mood" the fish are in. some days they won't bother with a fast moving bait whereas other days it'll get smashed. and always keep your finger on the line when you first cast out and its freespooling too the bottom
  15. if you just get a wok, a lid to fit and a cake cooling rack you have a quick hot smoker. put it on the stove at the lowest heat or even heat a cast iron grill plate or something similar start it on the stove until its smoking then put it on the plate with the plate off the heat, the plate should hold enough heat to keep the chips going nicely
  16. Yeah the symetre would be a good bet, I have a 4000 series symetre with 20lb braid that I caught a 20kg eagle ray with relative ease
  17. My opinion would be a shimano sedona fd matched to either a tcurve revolution inshore series or a shimano raider II mexican fire, I own both rods and a sedona and highly enjoy using all of them. The mexican fires have a cork grip and are wonderfully light so easy to cast around all day and not get tired and the tcurves are simply amazing rods.I have a 3-6kg tcurve for snapper on soft plastics and one night I went down the jetty and decided to take it down for ease of carrying, I had it matched to my 2500 sedona with 8lb braid and 9lb leader and put a float rig on for some tommies. Even with a
  18. Here's a photo of a ray wing I just prepped ready to cook tomorrow, while I was cutting it up I had one of those fish coating mixtures (those ones you buy from woolies with spices mixed in with the bread crumbs) and didnt even soak the ray in milk first, cut it straight off washed it in a bit of tap water and coated it and deep fried it. Came out tasting beautifulOn the right in this photo you can see the meat I have cleaned off, and on the left you see the inner cartilage layer of the wing with the meat trimmed off. About a 10 minute job at the most (the large piece of cartilage missing is wh
  19. yeah I'm not one to waste any fish scraps, Even if I fillet a fish and have the body left over (if I already have enough berley) I prefer to freeze the left over frames then put them out into the water somewhere to feed up the area
  20. All boils down to how you cook it.As soon as possible after capture you want to remove the flaps (watch out for puncturing the liver if you puncture it and it bursts remove any meat off the flaps and roughly a cm away from where its permeated into the meat) and put them on ice, Alot of people say to skin it straight away but I found it didn't make too much of a difference. You can either soak the ray in milk (which will tenderize it at the same time) or soak it in brine for 2 hours prior to cooking in order to get rid of any ammonia taste that may be present in the flesh. There's alot of diffe
  21. Has it been shut during the winter before? do the kingfish stay in the general area or move through the gulf down to the deeper parts
