newtontoney 57
Hi guys, I have a couple of 12ft surf rods 1pce, my car is not a 4wd but its fitted with roof racks, can anyone confirm that as long as the rod is fitted to the roof racks properly its cool to drive like this with a 12ft rod fixed?has anyone had any issues from cops ? coogan 2
Carried 10'6" rods on car no probs. Can't comment on 12', mine are 2 piece. Generally put my rods in a home made PVC tube that is 11' long for protection from birds etc. If tying rods straight onto racks you may need to tie the tip down as it will wobble around a fair bit when travelling. adamibinfishin 224
another tip bud is if travelling with long rods is have butts facing forwards the front in case you hit something or as previously said tie down tip possibly if you cannot face the butts forward
Hugo 120
I second putting the butts facing forward, had a seagull shorten 2 beach rods a few years ago. If the rods stick out more than a metre behind your car be sure to tie a piece of red cloth to the end, and don't travel anywhere with sinkers of lures attached as they may break your rod(s). Rybak 622
Definitely have the rod butts facing forward. Also tie the rod tips together & place either foam or rags in between to prevent damage to the runners & the rods.
Luke5600 61
I have a medium wheel based 4wd which I regularly have 12 foot surf rods on and have never had a problem from cops, as long as its properly secured and not hanging too far back or infront you should be alright
Yorky 309
yep rod butts forward & don't travel with the reels attached as the extra wind drag will just put unnecessary stress on rods, reels & tie downs. if your putting them in a tube put them in rod bags first (1 per bag) to stop damage to the rod finish from rubbing Cheers Yorky
