  1. I know this subject has caused a lot of controversy, but todays Advertiser, page 22,just makes me wonder about the authenticity of the whole affair. The "angler" who allegedly caught and released the 2 metre Bronzie, claims to have taken over 2 hours to land the fish on a Penn International 130ST reel and wait for it,130lb line. :oMost Bronzies of that size and bigger that I have landed have been subdued in a quarter of that time on 15 or 20kg tackle, and some of these fish were taken of rock ledges in big swells.Something smells fishy here. : :
  2. Go to a reputable tackle store and get good advice. I tried ebay braid once!Absolute garbage. :
  3. No professional shark fishermen use mammal or poultry flesh when targeting Bronze Whalers or School Sharks, for the simple reason that if they did they would catch nothing, and there is not a single documented case of a Bronzie killing a human being, that I know of.Other species of Whalers such as the Dusky, which is very rare in our state are a different story, and Great Whites will eat just about anything.Don't you love journalist's.Right up there with Lawyers and Real Estate agents imho. :thumb: :thumb:
  4. Another potential friggin cash cow. :thumb: Stamp duty,Emergency services levy,alco-pop tax,GST.Give me a break. > > Pick an easy target and tax the crap out of it.How much of the money collected will be put back into replenishing fish stocks and preserving what environment we have left? Not much is my guess.Let's tax lattee's and holiday McMansions instead. Rant over. >
  5. I used to get some strange looks down at the Murray Mouth a few years ago, when I released Mullies. ;)I'd keep two or three for the freezer in a season, then catch and release. I actually had a well known Goolwa local try to gaff one that I released. :o. This same guy and his mates were exceeding bag limits and selling huge numbers of Mulloway for years. These are the same idiots that are whinging about a lack of fish today. : :
  6. Looks like Cray is off the menu this Christmas. $120 per kilo. Lucky country, my arse. > > No wonder poaching is becoming widespread. :thumb: :thumb:
  7. The Goolwa and Coffin Bay cockles are commanding high prices due to the popularity of traditional Paella in trendy restaurant's,mainly in the Eastern states. Therefore the Pro's will continue to hammer them. The Coffin Bay area in particular has had stocks severely depleted in the last few years. The amateur loses out again. > >
  8. How was this for an idea. The Penn 350 had a spiral bar levelwind that your line travels over. It works quite well and will not affect casting distance. http://www.fishyorkepeninsula.com/images/attachments/AsAxHL0r__Pen350.jpg[/img]
  9. Check out Barlowstackle.com. Looks like it could be a blast making your own SPs. ;D
  10. Which store is the reel at? Might have a look at it. {SMILIES_PATH}/wink.gif Cheers Spiny.
  11. There have been around 2 hundred manufacturers of fishing reels in Australia in the past. {SMILIES_PATH}/shocked.gif We have only got Alvey left. {SMILIES_PATH}/cry.gif Check out reelwidow.com. Very interesting. {SMILIES_PATH}/smiley.gif
  12. The Seascape 621s were the numero uno high speed reels on the N.S.W. coast during the 70s.They caught a lot of impressive Tuna and King's amongst other's.The main problem was the pinion gear which only had about 8 teeth and stripped on a frequent basis. The later 621s came with a spare pinion gear when bought new.
  13. The old Seascapes in good condition, complete with boxes and paper work can fetch over $200. I don't sell my old reels,I fish as many of them as I can. Something about a big Salt Creek Salmon on an old cane rod loaded with a vintage overhead. {SMILIES_PATH}/grin.gif {SMILIES_PATH}/grin.gif
  14. Used to see an odd Tailor at the Dust Hole and some big ones were taken at Waitpinga on a regular basis. Mainly an incidental catch in S.A.,but they are always a decent size.
  15. I think you will find that the Sea Snake was actually a Worm Eel.They will often take a baited hook and twist themselves around your line >{SMILIES_PATH}/angry.gif:(" title="Angry" />
  16. I love the old Swedish made Abu's and the older U.S. made Penn stuff.Showing my age here {SMILIES_PATH}/cheesy.gif {SMILIES_PATH}/cheesy.gif .Some of mine have been flogged to death for years with hardly a part replaced.
  17. We used 30 lb mono with a 2 metre double, attatched to 2 metres of 60kg wire, and a 12/0 Gamakatsu hook.Big Salmon fillets were used as bait.We fished on the bottom using a 4oz running sinker. My mate Tim used a TLD20 on a custom built Sabre LBG stick and I used a cheap CL70 Chinese Ming Yang overhead on an old Ironglass light game rod.The Ming Yang performed well, great drag until a massive Eagle Ray shredded the level wind late in the session.I've removed the level wind and put grommets in the holes.Hoping to completely destroy the reel in the near future.
  18. Here are the tuna caught on the 1st day. Tough little scrappers on light gear. Trolled up on pink tuna skirts http://www.fishyorkepeninsula.com/images/attachments/FHbiyTIo__Paul_and_Phil_Tuna_2.jpg[/img]
  19. Well folks,I'm back from my pilgrimage to Fowlers Bay.The weather was great for 4 days before the Southerly buster hit us.We managed a couple of nice Tuna only a kilometre from the jetty on the first day.Heaps of mutant Tommies,Gar and Snook off the jetty at night time and early morning and had a mind blowing session on Bronzies off a rock ledge on Point Fowler. We caught and released 3, up to 2 and a half metres long and lost 8 in an unforgettable 2 hours. The gear we were using was a bit light on,30lb mono.My 12 year old son landed the only legal Mully, his first and I got another 6 foot Bronzi
  20. I'm heading off to my mates place at Fowlers Bay for two weeks.Going to do a lot of surf and rock fishing and we're also taking two 19 footer's to sample the offshore fishing. It's been a long year and I can't wait {SMILIES_PATH}/cheesy.gif {SMILIES_PATH}/cheesy.gif
  21. Good to see something positive being done, but I think the Murray is doomed.During the last 30 years the degradation I have witnessed makes me want to scream.Over use of the limited flow for agriculture and the damage caused to the banksides by power boats is killing our lifeblood as I type.Time for drastic measures, who gives a damn if it upsets a few people.
  22. I used to stay at Dutton Bay near Coffins when I was a young chap.It was quite common to see roos swimming across the bay.Which prooves a point, they're too lazy to hop all the way around the bay.Or maybe they are smarter than we give em credit for :? :?
  23. G'day. Is anyone in Adelaide selling the Magnetix?
  24. O.K. this is my first post, looks like the site South Oz fishers have been waiting for,Congatulations!Got any old tackle that you still use?If so let's have a look.I collect old reels as a hobby, mainly surf sized overheads. Here's a few. http://www.fishyorkepeninsula.com/images/attachments/Pb3YMx0n__old_surf.jpg[/img]
