  1. Yep, I am big on 1 piece rods as well. 'Hassan's' deli/takeaway on 4th Avenue, Klemzig has 14kg bags of ice (6 bucks) for those impromptu sessions when you haven't got the ice cream container or milk carton ice ready.
  2. Professional fisherman Nathan Rynn works in the waters off Mackay, and said if the proposal went ahead, he and many other small operators would suffer huge financial losses. "It will be an absolute disaster for our small businesses up and down the coast," he said. "We rely on the ocean to feed our families, so we need every area that is available to us at present. "The previous Liberal Government has just had a $10 million commercial fishing licence buyout. They have got rid of 61 kilometres of large mesh gillnet off the east coast. "I really don't think there is any need to shut any more
  3. It's a topic i have mixed feelings about. I am sure AFMA will heavily scrutinize this venture. At 7.5 % of the total biomass against the prolific breeding capacity of small pelagics it should be fine. AFMA's on board invidulators just need to ensure they move about to avoid localized depletion. Small pelagic species are well supported by the iron rich waters of the East Australian current thanks to dust blowing off central Australian deserts. Been reading Facebook on this topic. Noted the alarmists are already going off with irrelevant fearmongering. Recfishsa said they have

  5. That's the lad. Good on him. 14 kgs more than my biggest for the day.
  6. 28.2kg's (i think) was the biggest between the two boats of mates that I know. I heard the biggest on Saturaday was around the 34kg mark caught by a 17 year old. Tough to beat 34kg's. That's pretty big compared to most of the tuna we saw yesterday.

  8. Despite the play on personal positions, an interesting read and I appreciated the depth of debate presented. I do believe however, that the scientists involved would be the only people able to "set the record straight" as RJ put it. Contact them and ask for an explanation in writing or just move on maybe?
  9. This is where it gets a little tricksy. Numbers or weight? Or should that be...supposed weight... Note the sentence in the first para on p3 of the attached. "It was assumed that the size structure of the fish taken by recreational fishers was the same as that taken by the commercial handline fishers in the same region..." And this 2005 follow-up gives 115,000 harvested by recs - yet the "re-analysed" data for 2000/01 in the 2007/08 RFS states there were 85,000 harvested. As compared to 97,000 in 07/08. Except, the 2005 re-appraisal of the 2001 NRIFS ascribes a weight of 3.6 kg per fis
  10. I showed the graph given by the Chairman of Recfish SA, where he plots the weights of snapper caught by reccos. Yes, I assume these values were from the 2000/2001 and 2007/2008 surveys, and on checking appear close to the values stated. Your value for 2001 is not correct according to the original survey. I have not misled anyone, and the graph was produced by Recfish SA. I am unsure what I have to exactly explain. I just thought the graph would be useful to reccos. The term 'projections' has no place in historical data. A 'projection' is a term used to guess future trends based on
  11. As I previously indicated, the graph from the RFSA site (April 2013 from memory) has now been supplanted by the SARDI 2014 SAR (for commercials at any rate), and the rec extraction...toss a coin...to be advised. Kon, one can attribute any claimed increase in rec snapper catches between the two surveys to the shift in rec effort moving offshore to boat based fishing. Page 3, section 4, bullet 2.
  12. I note the statement "projections performed by the chairman of Recfishsa" in your original post above that graph. Please explain?
  13. Can hardly call any trend from the quality of SA's rec fishing data as already discussed. It simply doesn't exist. That is not PIRSA's position, who afterall are responsible for publishing this data. The differences between the Commercial and Recreational catches of Snapper are very clear as the graphs show. Well if that data didn't come from the rec fishing surveys where did it come from? Have there been some third party scientific assessments carried out in SA without public knowledge or something? The reason why I ask is despite declining recreational fishing participat

  15. There is a bit more to this issue than just rec v pro. Some pro fishers also lost out. What changed was the fishery went from by and large a handline fishery to a longline fishery. My workmate (an ex handline snapper commercial) was made financially untenable by the longliners so he handed in his licence. The best data is on page 27, figure 3.1.a in the below link referenced by kon in his attached images. http://www.sardi.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/210050/Snapper_2013_Fishery_Assessment_Report.pdf
  16. The rec surveys in the past included such a small sample of the recreational fishing public they are not even worth utilising as a management tool IMHO. Talking to some colleagues that have participated in the past, through lack of trust they deliberately left out details.
  17. Man does this kid remind me of me! Wait till he get his own wheels....his family will never see him lol. Too much fishin to do! My first datsun cost 20 bucks to fill up but it took me to some fish. Cheers TB
  18. I agree with both sections highlighted in bold. With another 4 years of labor in government and the claim by this government before the election to increase 'all motorised bans' along the entire metro coastline it's not PIRSA I don't trust but Labor. There inlies the problem for Donnellan who only wants plutonic knowledge and has no interest in the wider debate.
  19. This is from the WACRA petition that ended up a ban on all motorised vessels, read the qouted petition below. The last line in particular.....the same mob who instigated the meeting RECFISHSA had with PIRSA to ban metro shark fishing. RECFISHSA were forced into a position of compromise as WACRA had more power over decision makers than RECFISHSA. They created a media fear campaign backed by a federal labor minister and other connections. PIRSA under Gago had a total ban sort prior to RECFISHSA being made aware of the pending decision. RECFISHSA subsequently had to rubber stamp a media release s
  20. "I know as I type this, others elsewhere will be saying how SH admin are zealots, and in PIRSA’s pockets etc, but the reality is far from that"Not me ale...."In this case, a scientist has asked ( thru the right avenues) if there is any chance members of the forum could help him with any info on a rare skate, nothing more.If he has worked alongside other groups, so be it, SH , is just another group ."No problem with the scientists or their case as its not them that would use feedback against us. I think the metro sharking issue upset enough members of this forum to justify exercising extreme
  21. Fair enough bjorn2fish but I would hate to see rec fishers get sucked in again. It is unfortunate that science has to be rejected because of politics but like I said, this is something the scientists can take up with our government and the zealots. If they all want science with rec fishers again then they can change their agenda first.
  22. Good friends with caica yes and just as uninformed. From issue 23 newsletter"It is estimated that up to 50% of blue swimmers caught in the gulf each year can be taken by amateurs (you and me crabbing) so we DO contribute to the decline in numbers. It is interesting that even though the commercial operators have stopped, there has been no call to the wider community to play its part?"Maybe 50% metro waters but 29% statewide estimates. No wonder Gago and Caica saw rec limits reduced, their friends set the agenda.
  23. http://friendsofgulfstvincent.org.au/2013/04/rare-magpie-fiddler-ray/Given point 4 of this webpage I will not be reporting any catches for said species. Just as many other rec fishers don't these days.Sorry that science has to suffer again, but there are too many in society that just want to stab rec fishers in the back!Perhaps you can get the scientists to address the political side with government first?TB
