  1. As mentioned in another post, I am looking to get another rod for landbased YFW/Gar etc. The rods I have do not have a really flexible tip but are probably medium flex tip and are 6ft. I don't want anything expensive, and although at say $80+ is still too much for me. I looked in Kmart and saw a Sports Fisher 2.4mtr/8ft combo for $30 (yes you can laugh now) and in BCF a Jarvis Walker Devil 2.4mtr/8ft combo $50 (reduced to $40) - yes laugh again. But to me they seem they would do the job (of course they may not). But what I noticed, when doing a trial cast, is that the tip f
  2. Thanks UP. I reckon I have the luring (say for Salmon) ok now - I actually have 20lb braid (could be 15lb as you say) and a metre of 30lb mono leader (separated by swivel). For the smaller stuff (YFW/FH/Gar etc) I'll use around 6lb mono (just because cheaper than braid) and 8lb fluro. The 'knot' (whether it be a FG or Uni etc) has me intrigued, purely because I'm thinking line twist. Surely having a swivel would greatly reduce line twist compared to one straight line with a knot. Or, does this really not matter due to casting and sitting for a bite compared casting a lure and ret
  3. Hi doobie. I'd lighten up that main line mono a bit to 4lb-8lb (approx. 2-4kg) for those species listed. If you prefer to stay with mono then run it straight through, ie your main line is your leader all the way through. The less knots, swivels, attachments and weight the better, in my opinion. My preference is to run braid (4-8lb) to flouro (at the same or slightly higher line strength) attached by a double uni knot on my set ups for species you listed and others such as Bream and Flathead. Good luck. Yeah I agree, I had really just thrown numbers in as I wasn't sure what would gene
  4. In fact Anaconda have some braid on special for ET and Mojiko (maybe not the 'better' brands, but for the price might give them a go.) And as BCF is 50mts from them I check them too for both braid and fluro - just don't want to spend too much because it all gets expensivewhen buying brand names.
  5. Yeah I get line twist in my mono and thought I must have spooled it the wrong direction. But can understand if a swivel sticks then line twist could occur. But good point.
  6. See, I knew you were all experts But thanks for your input to my query. It has made my mind a bit clearer with your great explainations. I will put some of that information into use very shortly. I intend to buy a new rod about 7' with very light tip to pursue YFW off the beach this summer and try the suggestions you have made about leaders. I'm feeling more confident already Thanks again.
  7. ok, I'm a little confused or maybe a little inexperienced to the rest of you. And by 'you' I mean the experts and full pledged fisherman with knowledge 'second to none' offering the best advice one can get ok, enough of the bs Leaders........what really is better or best, depending on situation of course. I am landbased, off the beach and jetty. I currently run mono line (lets say 9kg) and have usually just run a 'leader' with the same mono line strength with hooks/sinker, or float/hook or lure (all separated with a swivel. And until this year I didn't know about a 'l
  8. I've used a SquidEzy tool twice now and find them to be 'awkward'. The separating of membrane is easy, but from there I find it is not so easy - probably just need to catch more squid and get more practice. What I find to humanly kill them is to slide your fingers inside hood to separate the first part of the membrane and they turn white - you might that a little easier. But great report mate and a good one to get the comp going
  9. Quick Alex and James put your patent mark on it - you'll make thousands
  10. Well done Alex and James. Great report and photos and I love the live wells - great initiative on how homemade ones can be done. Pity not a lot of whiting were there at the time but I'm sure they will get thicker in numbers before too long - so you'll have to return to the flats
  11. Yes it is an up hill battle for fisheries being undermanned and not much money thrown their way - they can only do what they can with what they have. I am starting to see a few people mentioning they have seen fisheries around, so maybe with the warmer weather their schedule has increased. I still reckon by a placing a sign at boat ramps and jetty entrances with some kind of regulation rules/fines will apply, might help towards reducing the number of fisherman doing things against the rules (it may just make them think twice before taking undersize or over bag limits or using too many
  12. Yep, same here, just 2 lines as that is managable. And I wouldn't report someone for have that 3rd line in the water either and would just shake my head and keep walking, but what gets my annoyed are the ones that have say 5 rods spread out and even a handline or 2 tied to the railing. To me that is excessive whether they were catching anything or not. And I agree that catching people who have a bucket of undersize fish or way over their bag limits certainly takes priority. But I generally only see the jetty side of things as I have no boat, but would like to see more presence by
  13. True, I believe there is only around 12 employees to cover SA, so are spread very thin unfortunately. But if wanting to report people to them, obviously a few discreet photos, rego etc. would certainly help them.
  14. I'm curious. I read from time to time in posts that 'fisheries' are at boat ramps checking over boats and catches etc for any illegal fish catches and so on - and good on them. But how often do they do this? More in warmer months I would reckon. But do they also concentrate on fishers fishing from jetties, beaches and/or rocks on catch sizes and number of lines in the water? How many times do you see a fellow fisherman on a jetty with more than 2 lines in the water - some have been seen with 5 or more. This doesn't seem to be a rare thing, but quite a regular occurance of
  15. An excellent report Alex with plenty of fish and squid catches. I'm sure you have been thinking about your next trip over there. Have seen a couple of your posts on FB as well, and I must say your videoing is top notch
  16. I used to get them near Whyalla, I think it was just north of point lowly?
  17. Thanks Kelvin and Underpants - I have saved the link and found BOM's links. KN, I found this post on S&H (8/2013) that you may find interesting http://www.strikehook.com/index.php/topic/22316-winter-yellow-fin-whiting-log/ And this one (9/2007) http://www.strikehook.com/index.php/topic/139-yellow-fin-whiting-are-coming-soon/
  18. I don't even know how you would work out what the water temp would be - portable thermometer in your pocket to stick in water But I have read here, like you said J@mes the water needs to warm up, and it was mentioned the weather needs a fews 'days' or a week of over 30's. But will also be interested in the correct advice and also where people generally go to catch them - jetties or beach.
  19. As Fishing Wholesalers have been goods supporters to S&H with prizes etc, most recently the Daiwa combo in the S&H August salmon competition, just thought I'd mention I went along to their BBQ for the end of their salmon comp yesterday. Around 25 people turned for the sausage sizzle and prize giveaways. Some guys even came in with some tuna caught yesterday (100kg from Pt McDonald) and thrown on the barbie as well. After some chit chat and more purchases over the counter for me, and sausages too of course, they started the draw with the major prize of a Penn conflict combo, so
  20. I did read in a post somewhere (and I think it was you) that mentioned the sand bar at low tide. As it was low tide at the time I was there I thouht I would give your theory a test. My cast could make the darker water, but only just Your theory will work one day - and then everyone will think you're a genius ☺ I wish Carl ☺ but you may have seen in one of my other posts that I did come across an R rated 'episode ' at Maslins (no pictures though ). Can't work them out, it's bloody freezing on some days and there are usually a few still walking around in their birthday suit
  21. Congratulations and well done sbarnden on winning the August comp. Was a great report and I'm sure you will put the rod/reel combo to good use - whilst wearing the S&H beanie and cap at the same time of course
  22. I hope you didn't think that I was meaning you were getting impatatient either Plankton - apologies if you did.
  23. I think Bjorn may be away or very busy - he hasn't posted anything in a little while. But the winner is......... either sbarnden, the fishing guru, you or me It is like fishing.....patience
  24. Thanks guys. Yeah those balls! Probably some kids lost them over the weekend from the winds. I kicked the 2 on the beach up the sand so they didn't float again (couldn't get the one in the water ☺). I'm sure some 'walkers' with their dogs will find and use them.
  25. I agree Bjorn that they must be, if they are around, hanging past the sand bar area. I tried getting out deep of course but just couldn't get out far enough. I also went North to the sandy area in the dunes and waded out on the sand bar there but still hard to get out far enough. They are cunning little salmons !!
