  1. I'm on the committee for the comp and am only involved in the advertising of the event. So keep your eye out for the TV AD and if you guys and gals want any more info check out www.elliston.com.au/salmon I'll try and give some reports from where the fish are getting caught. probably not too much fishing going on the next few days 4-4.5m swell coming! should make some gutters
  2. First week fortnight done and dusted! not too many big fish around but lots of salmon up to 2kg 1st Mystery Weight Report 2014.pdf
  3. 13.4 kg red emporer is one that sticks out! 14ft hammer head shark was a bit of fun for a while. skipper didn't want me to bring it on board but with a bit of help up she came. hooked a whale once, but when I was young hooked something massive, crystal clear water and about 20m to go 3 big sharks start to circle my rankin cod. BANG damn sharks! got the head and only a little bit of body and it weighed 14.4kg! imagine what it would be for a whole fish! these were all caught in coral bay WA when I used to work on charter boats and commercial fishing boats. more recently and
  4. And it starts on Sunday!!!!!!!!!! $10 entry for the whole 3 months! lots and lots of cash prizes and raffle prizes to win! Can't wait! Hopefully those schools of salmon still sitting out at locks well will come in nice and close! Wonder where the winning fishes will come from this year? Reports from the main salmon beaches-Sheringa, Locks, Talia and Mt Camel is that they are starting to show up in schooling numbers but a little too far out to cast at. BUT be ready with your lures as when they come in it can make for a very intersting fun session! lines tight!
  5. I use the same set-up here at locks and sheringa, and have caught many 4kg+ on salmon poppers and nothing on the full bait Actually the hookup on the poppers seem alot more solid than the other hooks I guess the salmon attack it a bit harder. I've tried many different colours and all seem to work, BUT most of the time i do put bait on them (squid or pillies), my mate calls it cheating I call it enhancing my chance! Lines tight
  6. Duel Adagio 125mm heavy is my favourite, attach a couple of size 5 decoy jigging hooks to them and the salmon will smash em! any colour works and have gone through a few myself and at over $25 a pop I better make aure I get some stronger line to stop snapping on the cast or learn some better knots! lines tight
  7. Hiya All, I got my first fishing ink the other week! Turned myself into a human ruler! it's a legal size for a king george whiting (here on the west coast) and for a flathead! I hope they don't change the size limit anytime soon!!! otherwise will just make it up to 50cm up my leg that way will be able to measure the salmon too Looking to get some more ink soonish. So if you got any fishing tatt's post the pic here Lines tight Dyl
  8. Hi All, Well its that time of year again where the 20th salmon comp is running on the west coast. Start planning your trip as this year there is alot more prize money and raffle prizes to win! Oh and there's a BIG school of salmon at locks well at the moment but just a tad too far out to cast to! Any questions there is details on the poster or just reply here and I'll try to help Lines tight!!
  9. Got that rod setup matched with a penn spin fisher ssv 6500 ll over 300m of 50lb braid Hopefully it should help land a west coast mully or 2
  10. I put my hands on a penn spin fisher v 12ft $100. Its a beautiful thing!
  11. I'm also in the look for a new surf rod and have many people mention the penn prevail probably get a 12ft to match penn spin fisher ssv 6500LL (can't wait to get this baby) Think it's light enough to cast lures with for a while and then solid enough to hopefully land a mulloway/shark My current surf rod is a silstar crystal tip 10ft 3' and I've had it for well over 10 years and it has caught some serious fish! can't fault this and it is light to walk the beaches casting lures
  12. If we went in it last year do we have to register again?doesn't look like it but just wanted to double check?!EAGLES! to easily make the top 8 and hopefully without as many injuries as last year can be a force in september
  13. I mainly fish because I LOVE to eat fish!it might seem a little bad but if the fish is of legal size it very rarely goes back unless it's a fish that doesn't freeze well.or i have got steak for tea Plus nothing better than sitting on a beach having a couple of and watching the waves and enjoying the serenity. it's when its like this that i don't really care if i don't catch a fish!
  14. AHHHHH the ol' ledge hey!nice spot to fish! was there a couple of weekends ago. fished from mid arvo til late.WEAR SOME BOOTS as the rocks are a bit sharp. We only caught whiting there and a few tommies but those tommies were sent flying back out as live bait.had one run that lasted for about 10secs so got me excited to go back.ledge would be maybe couple meters high but not too sure how deeplines tight!
  15. before you go head into scotts beach and get some salmon fillets for baitall the rest advice above is great!
  16. Salmon, tommies, snook any kind of oily fish are great smoking!!ever tried squid?! I did once and it turned out bloody beautiful! tube and tenticles yummo!!I normally just sprinkle a good amount of brown sugar and salt on the fish flesh and wait until all the sugar has soaked in then put in the smoker. normally do it twice if there is a good amount of fish or the fillets are too thick.Smoked snook is one of my favourites! will probably never let another snook go they taste that good!
  17. touche'if you want some nice fish head out with ash for sure!!!!!!!!!!Elliston boat charters out of elliston. but main target is nannygai / whiting and weather permitting out wider for tuna/kingies/samson fish
  18. Bloody brillant mate!!!been looking for one of these for a long time now instead of going onto willy weather.Locks Well?Sheringa?Flinders Island?locks well would be pretty much the same as elliston but others are further away
  19. this was a few months back BIGM, got a fair few that day if I remember rightly. But there has been HEAPS of schools of salmon all up the coast from port lincoln to locks well.Couple of weeks ago fish and sharks everywhere. got my biggest salmon at 5.8kg
  20. this is what they look like over this way near Elliston
  21. Now I'm just showing off!!kept 2 fish from yesterday arvo down the stairs and let go more than 20 fish mostly this size if not a bit bigger.Have been down to locks well 5 times in the last week - that's 1415 steps down and 1415 steps up. Gonna get fit if I keep this up!!
  22. Schools of fish are still around at the moment!I'm like a kid in a candy store!! I can't help myself I love hooking the salmon and letting them go!gonna take my whiting rod there this arvo for a fish. but I reckon a 5kg slob out of the surf will test my fishing abilities!
  23. Record weight this year for the Elliston Salmon comp.weighing in (gutted) at 6.1kg caught from taliaI only kept 4 fish this day that's all I could be bothered carrying up the stairs. Was like a kid in a candy store casting lures at the school released at least over 40 fish this day

  25. Claiming it as my best day fishing ever!Which is a BIG call for me.Heading down to locks well and a MASSIVE school of salmon sitting in a gutter about 40m out.Grabbed my favourite lure Duel Adagio and proceeded to cast for hours on end until my arms were sooooo sore!Normally these schools hold fish 1-3kg but ended up hooking a donkey of a fish!New PB salmon from the surf for me went 5.8kg.Few sharks hanging out the back and kept the school of fish right there. didn't really want to hook a 10ft bronzie but when you foul hook a salmon I suppose it's easy food for him.Thank goodness got my lure b
