  1. I do a really good job of shortening mine. With monotonous regularity
  2. I use Gamakatsu live bait hooks (not the circle version) in 2/0 up to 9/0, sharks kingies etc. I have had no troubles with them and also use them as replacement hooks for for trebles on trolling lures. For mulloway and live bait I use a single 9/0 octpuse/suicide. l haven't tried circle hook yet but will give them a go eventually. I did read about circle hook use on longlines and the stats on hook-ups were impressive. It was a huge sample size (1,000s) and the difference between normal and circles was marked.Have read of this. http://www.fishing.sh/htmfiles/hookreports/tyingvssnelling.html
  3. Daiwa tournament is probably the best. I use tuf line but in the higher breaking strains. I have had had bad experience with Fins. Others may not have. And I fill the spool up and reverse it when required like the pirahna.
  4. I'll see if I can find a video of a seal eating a big eagle ray I had just caught. Gotta get home to find it though.
  5. I had a few butterworth rods in my youth. Do these fir the same category as a "phenomenon?
  6. Lofty is right. If you constantly watch your line for slack in weedy conditions then braid is the go. However, I obviously do not have the same concentration ability as he does. Except in all but the non weedy conditions I use mono. Always take a couple of rods and reels so no issue. Braid is far superior with some wind on leader for shock absorption when there is no weed. The wind on leader is essential as well when the fish is in the wash almost at your feet. Need some stretch then. And all braids aren't equal in the surf. One popular brand is not stiff enough and birds nests even casting a s
  7. I've never seen anything like that before. How do they work?
  8. Just had a look at the texalium Wilson lines and what texalium is. It appears it is only for cosmetic purposes and has the properties of normal fibreglass.http://www.carbonfibergear.com/colored-carbon-fiber-is-usually-texalium-but-what-is-texalium/Did a few more searches and the aluminium is definitely for looks. Any strength in the tex bit is probably a result of laying up more glass on the blank. Who'd of thunk it?
  9. IMO graphite rods are much better for throwing lures and I even prefer them for bait use in the surf. Glass rods are great for trolling' date=' especially when chasing bigger fish. I actually don't own any pure fiberglass rods' date=' but I do have some glass/graphite composites. You stated that you wanted to use the 4000 reel for throwing metals to tuna, what weight range of lures do you see yourself using? And the 6000 as a land based setup, can you be more specific as to how you may want to use it? What sort of fish do you want to target? Bait or lures? Braid or mono? Any extra info could hel
  10. I don't really have any rituals like this before I pay? Do you use your other hand to pass the cash across? What is the reaction of the staff? :woohoo:
  11. like me who contributes to recreational fishing positions I contibute often to fishing in the "stand-up lean against the gunwale" and sometimes the "sit in comfy camp chair watch surf rod in pole" positions.Ha' date=' at salt creek a freak wave once had me in the 'floating on a blanket of white water' position. Not as desirable a position on a freezing cold morning with water filled waders on.... :woohoo:[/quote']Happened twice to me. Once asleep on the FWC on a beautiful day copped a bit of wash. The best one was late last year on the opposite bank of the murray mouth (on the spit). Had a f

  13. Because I don't trust retailers I would like to ask your opinions on spinning rod choices for two of my reels.Currently I have a Shimano Thunnus 4000 and a Baitrunner D 6000 that share a penn "sports" 6-8 kg boat road. The Thunnus runs 20lb tufline and Baitrunner 30lb. I have caught some good fish including big gummies and schoolies and some smaller BFT on the rod and the 6000. But the rod is getting a bit "rough" :S . What would be a good rod for the Thunnus? I reckon that this will now spend more time in the boat and it will be used up at Exmouth casting small metals at schools of small T
  14. Mate,Its not at all hard to do. I made two 4120 surf rods when I was 13, no youtube and no help. Still have one. The knots are easy, method is simple. Guide placement is critical. I purchased the blanks from a tackle store (Grants on Grange Rd - maybe long gone?) and made sure I marked out the placement for the guides on a factory rod of the same blank and style before I left. Even made up a jig out of ply with two V cuts (no rollers) to hold the blank whilst binding. I'd even suggest buying some dowel from bunnings, getting yourself some binding material and having a practice. Pretty easy to
  15. Correct. Black Magic, Penn and Jinkai mostly.
  16. After trying all sorts of different brands of fluoro leaders for lures and rigs I just don't use it anymore. Knot strength is just not there. I didn't catch any more fish either.
  17. Here is another Scotts beach shot - shark stalking school of salmonMy solution - a fairly hefty livebaitps - live bait in a different situation
  18. Here is another shot. On the right you can see a hookup and the extent of the school reacting to the strike. I lied about ankle deep. Seems mid calf.
