  1. Ok so I know how you can get butt's on a rod extended/shortened, but can you get the tip section extended to make a rod lighter tipped?I have a rod that's an absolute brute, but I wouldn't mind it having a softer tip to detect bites easier, is it possible to modify it like this?

  2. My understanding is that backing is used 1) to fill the rest of the spool when there isn't enough braid to fill it and 2) to stop slippage of braid on the spool under heavy load, but if its only for bream/salmon trout/ whiting etc. then it probably wont slip regardless, if I want to completely fill a spool for say snapper/kings/ tuna, ill use a strip of tape around it so the braid has something to grip under a heavy load. Otherwise backing is used when a spool cant be fully filled with braid. Now days reels are coming out with a rubber type strip around the base of the spool so there is no need for backing, check out the new Penn spinfishers closely, they have it on their spools, so do the Pfleuger Crank models I think :)It doesn't so much protect it, just helps the braid hold tight under heavier drag settings, hope this helps?

  3. g'day Knackers!I have a Shimano Terez, rated at 15-30lb, very impressed, tough as nails... ive used it for big snapper up to 27lb, cant fault it and have never questioned its power, very very strong and reliable rodA mate of mine has one also and uses it for casting metals from the boat at pelagics out near the Montegue islands (not sure on spelling) in WA and he reckons it casts a mile too!I picked it up for $220.00 a year ago, not sure on prices these days, cheers.

  4. Went down the local tackle store today to have a play with a few surf rods to invest in, went down there thinking of getting an fsu5120 or mt8144.... saw a sabre sitting in the corner with a bit of dust on it, listed at $400 bucks, I only wanted to have a look at that price to see if the fsu5120 felt similarHad a chat to the owner of the shop about doing a bit of a deal.... got it for $200!! absolutely stoked, cant wait to use it!Was this a good price? I know these are sought after rods! they look top quality! :boot::clap:

  5. your on the right track mate, its hard to predict when the mulloway will be near your bait though, plenty of people on here have caught them on a slack tide or dodge, just gotta be in it to win it! hope to see a pic of a big mully after your trip!

  6. yeah, ive lost a few fish using 6/0 hooks, now I just go big with hook size and don't have too many troubles, I do the same with snapper in the boat too. and cant really remember, the adrenaline was going haha, I backed the drag off a bit when it got close in and didn't have a gaff so after all the stuffing around probably 10 minutes, caught it half hour after the peak of the low tide

  7. This one took a fresh (human consumption grade) Pillie, but ive also got them on fresh mullet fillets and freshly caught salmon fillets too, I guess the bottom line is try to use as fresh as possible baits :) however I do always bring a bag of old bait as back up if need be, otherwise it becomes berley, hope this helps!Don't be scared to use a pair of 9/0 or 10/0 hooks buddy! this way if you do hook that big one you are a less risk of losing it mid-fight. Even soapies fit their gob over them hooks too :f
