4THALOVE 45
seen this in the advertiser this morning though some might be interested AUTHORITIES are considering lifting a ban that prevents professional anglers from harvesting cockles on Goolwa Beach. Commercial fishers take their cockles from the Coorong side of the Murray Mouth on the Younghusband Peninsula all the way to Kingston in the South East.Recreational fishing for cockles is largely restricted to Goolwa beach. However, senior fisheries manager Dr Lianos Triantafillos says two years of research, funded by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, will feed into a new strategy."The stock was fished heavily for many years, so we want to make sure it has recovered sufficiently," he said. "Once that's done we're going to look at sharing both beaches again."For 25 years, John Jackson from Hindmarsh Island has enjoyed fishing for cockles on both sides of the Murray Mouth."I think cockle fishing should be allowed at the other side, for recreational fishers as well as the commercial fishers," Mr Jackson said.cheers 4THA. Fishie 98
Why is this?.... have the Pro's fished their side out and now want our Reccos' cockle source. Let's face it, how many reccos' really cockled on the Coorong side when we were allowed, unless you got there by boat access or 4WD from Salt Creek we can't access that area anyway  Quote : ""The stock was fished heavily for many years, so we want to make sure it has recovered sufficiently," ... end quote.... and who fished it heavily? Obviously the Pros' as us Reccos' can't cockle there  4THALOVE
Fishie 98
Also keep in mind that once the Marine Park is setup that the majority of the Cockling area on Goolwa Beach will be a "No Take Zone" anyway which will further reduce our Reccos' area of cockling. Is this new idea a ploy to let the Pros' in and clean the area out before it becomes a "No Take Zone" to all
Boyington214 0
Certainly seems to be a possible scenario, Fishie. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to let the Pro's make more money before closing it off to everyone.

archerfish 685
The most hilarious part of this article in the 'Tiser today was the accompanying photo of the dude (sorry John Jackson at Goolwa Beach, if you prefer to not be referred to as a "dude"!) standing there with net in hand when there's currently a BAN on taking pipis at Goolwa Beach.Another fine journalistic moment proudly brought to you by those wonderful people at "The Advertiser". Scubaarc 0
Hi all, cockling ban?? I am unaware of this ban, and I plan to do some cockling. When and where is the ban in place, ie. when can i go cockling
sbarnden 397
Hi all' date=' cockling ban?? I am unaware of this ban, and I plan to do some cockling. When and where is the ban in place, ie. when can i go cockling[/quote']Its all over the PIRSA thread.Cockling on the Goowla beach recreational zone is prohibited until the end of the season due to elevated E.Coli levels. You can still get them on the other recreational beach they opened up a while back but thats a bit of a long drive away. You can find a map to it here:Recreational Cockling Zone from 28 Mile Crossing to Kingston chunky
statesquider 0
As long as the pros are pillaging all of the cockles and selling them interstate as food then we'll be sweet paying top dollar here for them as bait ;)Clearly have thrashed one area so we can just "share" with them and they can empty the next before its closed off.Such a pity you have to think twice about buying cockles... chuckemback
