squidhead 0 Posted June 16, 2011 Report Share Posted June 16, 2011 Morning folks...Bought a 5-8kg rated rod last week after talking to the guy in a tackle shop about a second rod for squidding. Just yesterday I saw some squid rods that were specifically rated 2 to 5kg and were 6 ft and not 8ft like mine. Have I been sold a more general purpose rod under the guise of a squid rod?I suppose my question is - what's the general recommended rating for squid rods? (In kgs)Cheers PhilIf you're land based then the 8 foot rod sounds fine to me.Out of a boat the 6 foot rod would be better.5-8kg or 2-5kg its doesn't really matter.....both will work fine.Of course you can probably spend over $1000 on a japanese squid rod.....whatever makes you most happy.My squid rod doubles as my whiting rod and is a 7 foot 4kg-8kg daiwa tierra. breambo25 1 Posted June 18, 2011 Report Share Posted June 18, 2011 I was recently at a BCF in Victoria on the long weekend and was playing around with the Shimano Sephia. One thing I noticed about it was how light it was. It just felt like a bream stick. I was wondering how it would feel fighting a squid on something so light. But it did have a nice stiff tip for working squid jags with finesse which is obviously pretty important. All in all I do agree that 5-8kg is a bit heavy but something like a 2-4kg might be just a little bit too light. That's why I'm going to get a 3-6kg Berkley Egi Master. No need to fish heavier and on quiet days it can spook the squid I reckon.... Landbased you definitely need to go heaver - I don't fish lighter than 15lb from jetties, etc. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

I've seen really light rods off the jetty and the action for working the jig seems better with a lighter tip. My 5-8kg rod has a reasonably light tip...and I have been pulling squid in no probs with it. Just thinking about the advice in shop I got when asking for a 'sqid rod'. He gave me a general purpose 5 to 8kg rod. Thanks anyhow for the comments...it has helped me understand how others view the topic.TaPhil Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Usually you will find specific rods for the smaller jigs and then ones for sizes 2.5-3.5.So decide what your preference re jigs is and factor that in to your decision.There is also specific Egi braid and then Egi reels.Take a look at these rods. krustykrab 0 Posted June 20, 2011 Report Share Posted June 20, 2011 The whole squid rod thing.....I havent tried one but, I think that squid are so abundant here in SA that it doesnt warrant spending big bucks on specialised squid rod and reel, when alot of the time you can go and catch them quite easily on a cheap set up with cheapo 5 for $10 squid jigs in the bargain bin at ya local tackle store.The japanese are so into squidding and I think there are nowhere near as much squid per capita over there as there is here , that it is big business ovver there to get any edge that they can, but as I have already said,there is oodles of squid here and not as much competition for it in comparison.Happy squidding! southie THE BANGA 2,304 Posted June 20, 2011 Report Share Posted June 20, 2011 beleive it or not there are some crazy items out there for squidding.. was in Anglers choice the other week and saw a funny looking spike thing in with the jaggs. i asked pete what it was and he laughed and told me that its and EGI spike. its designed to "kill the squid" by using this spike u stab it between the eyes... hahah what a joke... He went out to some Western Port jetty with these Japanese Egi guys and they only caught 1 !!!lol When he did catch it though he pulled out the egi spike and killed it immediatley. He said it makes the squid taste nicer if they are killed that way straight after being caught. Personally I just give it one karate chop. I mean most people dont eat the head itself only the tentacles.egi spike is a bit silly unless your catching truck loads of squid..lol Quote Link to post Share on other sites
