Peter Morse casting clinic

Recommended Posts

Have just heard from Morsie that there will more than likely be a casting clinic right at the end of July, the clinic will go for the entire day and will be $150 per person, and he will have some time the day before for one on one tuition if that is of any interest. As we do not have an accredited casting instructor here in SA its a great way of getting any bad habits pointed out and general casting bettered by a pro. I know i need the help!Once its concrete i will either post it up here or forward the forum to Peter so he can post up contact details ect.

Hi Chris,Put me down if it is on a weekend.Do you know where the venue is? Peter Hayes did his course at Pinky flat on the Torrens, about the same price if I remember correctly.I could always do with a few tips, still trying to work out the snake roll for my next Tongariro trip.It is very difficult to get casting accreditation.Only the very best casters stand a chance.Pretty sure Haysie had to go to the States to get his masters.I think he is the only Aussie to have achieved it.Stu Tripney is the only Kiwi with his masters also.

As of this stage, it will be held on the 31st which i think is a sunday. As for the venue it has not been mentioned yet, i sent Peter an email today and he did not have one planned, but a little bit of interest goes a long way and he has decided to hold it again despite being very busy. As a self taught fly caster my skills are limited and with so many bad habits i need to get my casting deconstructed and reconstructed regularly and more so now i am trying to cast heavy clousers ect in the salt.To anyone who is in the beginning stages of fly fishing or someone who needs to improve a few small things or even if you have never had any tuition before i fully recommend it! I spent three hours with a pro a couple of years back and it made a huge difference to me , but time away from my gear has made me regain all my bad habits again, which makes it a very important day for me and one i would like to attend every year.Only problem i have now is making sure i can actually make it i have always had something important come up in the weeks before in the past!I will post a link for Peters email in the morning for any people wishing to get info or to book for the clinic.

I went to the clinic Morsie held at Pinkerton flat last year along with John Walkley, Goldy and Rangfish. I reckon all 4 of us would vouch for Morsies teaching methods and the great day we all had. It's hard yakka standing in a reserve casting all day but what you learn is well worth the $150.00.Morsie is also a character with a great sense of humour and some brilliant fishing stories. My advice is " JUST DO IT "Cheers Darren

The venue for this year will be different, reason being is that having it at a place like the last one you tend to have people that stop by and watch or even worse stand behind a caster making for broken concentration and people getting offended when they are told they are hindering the clinic. As the choice was last minute Peter is still getting the right venue down[there may be a chance to blind flog for some three eyed bream if the proposed venue goes ahead] and then will set a flyer up, as soon as i get it i will post it here for any interested parties.Generally , you obviously need a flyrod, and preferably a bright visible line if you have a choice, and a packed lunch.

My place in Willunga has been enquired about and offered with no charge. Possibly being held there7 acre dam with jetty, ideal to watch someone on, wading flats and deep dam wall sectionBoat house as well to duck out of the rain and easy viewing of jettyBBQ lunch available if enough interestedChance of snagging a trout as well. Hope it helps. Just pleased to promote the sportWillunga is a bit of a slog for northern guys but its a private area and reduces the risk of interference from the public and liability issuesAccomodation beds camping etc a option as well if you have a long trip to get down here

Not a whole lot of trout in there tho' :silly: :silly: :silly:

I don't think anyone paying $150 dollars for a "casting" clinic would be to interested in what sort of fish reside in the water.I'm pretty sure that it is a casting clinic ,not a fishing clinic.I have lived at glenelg all my life and taken some excellent bream and a few good schoolies over the years on plastic ,bait and fly if anyone wants to hang around for a fish afterwards ;)

Fly Casting Day with Peter Morse - Federation of Fly Fishers Certified Master Casting InstructorWhether you’re a beginner or an advanced caster we all have something to learn. I think the best thing we can learn are sufficient skills to be able to analyse our own cast (or a mates) to the point where we can figure out what’s going wrong and correct it. There are 5 Essentials to good fly casting – with just one of these Essentials missing you can’t throw a good, effective, and efficient cast.- No slack in the line.- The correct stroke length for the amount of line you have out, and for the bend in the rod.- A constant and smooth rate of acceleration.- A straight line path of the tip of the rod.- A correct pause front and back as you wait for the line to straighten.Even many advanced casters don’t completely understand these principles, but if you learn them, understand them, and apply them you will very quickly become a better caster.Where – Glenelg Baseball Park - Anderson reserve (see map)Date Sunday 31st July 2011Cost $150 pp Start time 8.30 rig up – 9.00 start.Finish time 4.00pmSome tackle can be provided – a BRIGHT ORANGE OR ANY OTHER BRIGHT COLOURED LINE IS A BIG HELP, clear intermediate lines are difficult to see and therefore analysing the loop is next to impossible if you use one.Bring water, lunch, sunscreen, a folding chair, a note pad, hat, sunnies, line cleaner and an open mind.To book a place you will need to pay a deposit. To do this please contact Peter Morse on petermorsie@optusnet.com.au

  • 4 weeks later...

Spent a great weekend at North Glenelg.I have had casting instruction from certified instructors before but IMHO Peter was much more comprehensive.4 of us attended Saturday for an introduction on what to expect in the FFF certified casting instructor examination.Peter ran through the whole test both the theory and practical .He spent several hours analysing our casting styles and telling us what to expect from the judges when we sit the exam in Cressy Tasmania next March.Sunday was spent doing basic lessons with eight other fly fishers.Peter asked the 4 would be instructors to assist in some of the simpler instruction during the basics. The afternoon was spent on more advanced techniques such as double haul ,rollcast and shooting heads. There was a lot of one on one.I received some tips on the snake roll which I have been trying to learn for months.under Peter's expert tuition it is finally coming togethor.I hope to put it to good use on my next Tongariro trip.Thoroughly enjoyable weekend.Any one who thinks they don't need tuition would be left in awe of Peter's skills.Casting some of his highly specialised shooting head outfits was a highlight for yours truly.CheersRollcast
