Astroman 0
Hi all,I have been given a fibreglass rod blank, and wondered if anyone would know the origin of it.. And if it's an unknown what type of rod would it make? The blank used to be a fishing rod, but then was converted to a HF vertical antenna, and now I am thinking of turning it back into a rod.The Blank is from tip to butt, 2970mm long or 116.9" long, at the butt end it is 33mm dia or 1.29" and at the tip it is 4mm or 0.157" It had a handle on it, but that came off after the epoxy gave way, with the handle on it makes it 10.3' or 3150mm long. The material thickness is not a great deal, fairly thin.It also has markings of FT120 and 4vx or 4xx on it.. I guess this is just the fibreglass blank serial #.I was thinking maybe this used to be a surf rod of some sort...Here are some pics of the blank, oh and excuse me in the last pic, needed some form in the photo, to size it against. I am only 168cm tall btw...Pic of the handle side.http://i363.photobucket.com/albums/oo73/AstromanSID/rodblank-001.jpg[/img]Pic of the full length.http://i363.photobucket.com/albums/oo73/AstromanSID/rodblank-002.jpg[/img]And me and the blank, just for size reference of the blank.Any ideas? Boyington214 0
Hey Astro,Snyder Glas have a blank designated as FT 120. It looks like it may possibly be that blank. If it is, you have a great potential Rob there mate. I have a Snyder Glas MT144 8 Wrap and it's a killer surf rod. Astroman
Astroman 0
Doing a little bit of research thanks for the info Boyington214, very helpful. So it's most likely a Snyder Glas blank FT120 4W. Turns out it's a 4-6kg line weight class with a casting weight of 45g.With this information I went hunting for images etc... so I could work out the dimensions for the handle, reel seat and guide spacings, but was unsuccessful. If anyone has a rod like this or similar or can help me find the parts I am looking for, please post or PM, I'd like to start to design this thing.
Cal 480
Thats a top blank mate,i have an MT 8120 which stands for 8 wraps 120 inches long.the blank you have is an ft120[very similar],which is fast taper approx 120 inches long,a bit faster taper and slighly more backbone, can chuck slightly more heavier weights than the mt 8120.Youd be looking at lure weights from 30 to 60 gram with that rod, ultimate about 45grams.Nice score mate,a superb salmon stick and allround rock fishing rod.cheers Astroman

Reason I ask, if it's not too much trouble could I get the dimensions of the guide spacings or a pic of the whole rod, I can work out the dimensions from that. This used to be a rod before but it's difficult finding where the guides were on it originally. Pic would be preferred though. Also does it matter if I use a spinning reel on it than an overhead arrangement?

Astroman 0
I have emailed Ross at the rod works, also, getting closer to working this thing out. I put some markings on the rod last night for guide placement etc... Looking good. I even like how the whole rod balances right where the reel is meant to go. Not sure how much of this will change once I start adding things to it.
Astroman 0
Is overhead, better than spin for a surf rod?
Boyington214 0
In my opinion, Astroman, it will come down to personal preference. Some prefer Overhead (As I do) and some prefer spin. 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. Astroman
Mr_Willy 3
Love the Snyder Glas rods.... Great pick up!!Depends on what you are doing in the surf..... I think for luring overheads would definitely give you better control....I used to have an overhead for surf fishing but it used to give me the gripes so I no longer use it and just stick to big threadlines.... Astroman 0
Hi Guys,I was thinking of the following parts for my 10' Snyder-glas Surf Rod... 4120 Fibreglass Rod.Note, all parts from The RodWorks http://www.therodworks.com.au for identification. If I can get similar parts from another source then I am open to suggestions.I already have the Snyder-Glas FT120 Rod Blank. What do you think of these parts to make the rod up?Guides.Fuji Hardloy Ring General Purpose Guide BNLG-6mm-40mm (40mm, 30mm, 20mm, 12mm and 2x 8mm) and BPLT Tip.http://www.therodworks.com.au/437-N-Frame/Fuji-Hardloy-Ring-General-Purpose-Guide-BNLG-6mm-40mm.htmlReel Seat.Alps Heavy Duty Aluminium AL Black/Dark Gold Reel Seat.http://www.therodworks.com.au/236-Heavy-Duty-Aluminium/Alps-Heavy-Duty-Aluminium-AL-Black/Dark-Gold-Reel-Seat.htmlStill not sure on grips to use, or what Duralons are... Going by Ian Millers Rod Building recipes I need 2 20cm Duralons, anyone know what these are? Are they these? http://www.therodworks.com.au/22-Duralon/Frogleys-Offshore-Straight-Duralon-Grip-08-inch.htmland I guess I need a front shaped grip also, so I thought this one would do... http://www.therodworks.com.au/22-Duralon/Frogleys-Offshore-Front-Shaped-Spin-Grips-3-6inch.htmlAnyone know how I can polish up the fibreglass rod? It has a few scratches on it, I'd like to shine up a bit. Is there something I put on the rod afterwards to make it all shiny?Oh almost forgot the thread to use... What would you recommend as a good thread, I'd like a metallic blue, gold and black for the colours if possible.Andrew.
