Ubolt 0
Tried some surface lures for yellows this arvo on the flats at whyalla hooked one but got off. Had heaps of follows but not many ate it. Tried a small walk the dog lure found it hard to get a good walk action any help. Read somewhere that if you use a small amount of stiff mono it is easier is this the case
Live Fibre 1
I have been using small poppers about 30mm and 2.5g in weight with a bit of luck just of late. From memory are "River 2 Sea" brand..........$6 each at Ray's Outdoors
archerfish 685
I found that the "Hawk Splashers" seem to be popular for YFW around northern NSW (Harrington, Forster-Tuncurry) the last time I was up that way:http://www.gusvenessfishing.com.au/lures.htm
keenfisho 1,416
I find that a bit shorter leader does help with getting the lure to walk the dog. With have the yfw following but not taking the lure when you see them behind try speeding the lure up a little it seems to make them want to hit it more.My favourite surface lure is the bassday sugapen 70mm in orange have also had good results with Berkley 3b prawn dog
crispy 2
i was thinking about getting one of those crystal bassday poppers the sinking ones have heard they work okay on them see what happens
Kuerschie 2,309
The leader should be mono not fluorocarbon as the mono will not sink as much as fluorocarbon. Also the Bassday Sugapen 70F is a gun lure and walks the dog quite well.
Grazz64 0
Nice tip on the mono K, never tried lures for yfw but ive had a spark ignited in me via various threads and might have to have a crack at it over summer. Thompsons beach isnt far from my place and ive heard a few blokes speak of catching a few there. Nothing ventured nothing gained.
Ubolt 0
The Only mono I have with me is 60 lb jinkai
Live Fibre 1
Might be a "fraction" heavy Just get a "cheapo" spool of 6lb line and keep that on hand.........just in case the 60lb doesn't happen
samboman 319
I don't use the walk the dog technique, just a long cast and reel it in fairly quick..... It leaves a nice v in the water and if they are there they will smack it.... When u see followers speed up a little, slowing down makes them loose interest ....Sambo Live Fibre
Ubolt 0
What with walk the dog style lures sambo
Hugo 120
Agree with Kuerschie about using mono in preference to fluorocarbon. Fluro tends to sink and pull the nose of the lures under, where as mono allows them to skip across the surface better. I don't bother with loop knots for surface fishing, just tie straight onto 4lb mono. OK to use bigger lures to 70mm especially if the surface is chopped up by wind (Sugar pens are excellent for this), ecogears and 3B scum dogs when it's calm. I use prawn type colours and patterns in summer, but it pays to understand what the whiting are chasing in any given location and try and match lure colours. If the whiting are about in numbers and feeding, a straight retrieve is often all that's needed and competition will see them smack lures straight away. Often though, you will need to work the lure to attract their interest, particularly if they are spread out. If you get follows but they are not committing, then it's a case of mixing up retrieve speeds and amount of lure action to find the trigger. Live Fibre
Ubolt 0
Been getting a bit more success with the surface lures. But only seem to manage to catch one or two fish. Got a good one yesterday 36 cm but the school spooked and I failed to find them again. Any suggestions
pauly s 426
in the case of yfw bait will always out fish the poppers i think. try and cast your lure past the school and bring it thorugh them, they spook very easy.
