Interesting, Kelvin..

The Mensforth's in their "Baits, Rigs & Lures for South Australian Fishing" book suggest the opposite (for Mulloway, at least), but offer no particular reason for doing so.

Your rationale sounds plausible, though.

Obviously we need a controlled experiment to get a definitive answer! ;)

Cal

Did you you have any particular species in mind when you originally posed this question?

Mainly Mulloway off the beach, strips of gar for bream and snook,I  seem to get rays unintentionally when using them, always wondered whether I have been doing it right or not. B)

Farbeit for me to contradict most peoples opinions but I have always put the hook through the skin side. I just think the bait sits better that way & looks more "natural" & appears more secure to me . As to the hook up rate well I really dont see what difference that makes as long as the hook point is exposed. Each to their own I guess.

Live bait is obviously always hooked thru the skin!!
