Beach Rod Holder

Im sure everyone knows that the easiest and cheapest rod holders are pvc pipe. I thought id just show how i flare the end of the pipe for those that dont. This holder is made from 40mm pvc and is around 1 mtr. long. It cost me $3 for the pipe and about 10 minutues of my time.1. heat the top centimeter with a lighter till the pipe is soft and then push the top end of a spray can into the pipe. This creates a flange in the pipe. Repeat this 3 - 4 times to get a nice size flare. *Make sure the can is empty to reduce the chance of it exploding ;D. I use the can because i couldnt find any other object with a dome shape to create the flare.2. Once flared, you will notice it still has a sharp edge which may scratch the stem of the reel. To fix this i heat the flared end and gently push it into the ground. you end up with a very neat flat surface for the reel to rest on.3. Give the area a nice smooth off with some 180 grit sand paper and clean it with some jiff or whatever.4. You also cut a sharp point in the bottom end. Nice work MikeI do something similar but hear the pipe with a blow dryer, then use a beer bottle to flare out the end.

I cant believe I bought mine that's a fantastic idea. So simple and so so cheap. I have a metal one at the moment that i don't really like because it doesn't hold in soft sand well, but it works quite well in harder sandy beaches that are rocky. I also have a store bought plastic rod holder that I'm not a huge fan of as its useless on a rocky beach because the plastic breaks easily and its not very well built. The way you have made your is a lot better than store bought plastic ones. I especially like the way you flattened off the top, makes for a very useful item. Cool idea to use a beer bottle too. I'm gonna have to knock a few up now :)Cheers for the idea

Nice work Mike,great idea with the flattening out,can fully understand the reasoning behind it.Once left the rodstands at home and made some up quickly with pvc bought at a country hardware store,cut the ends roughly with a hacksaw and after the trip noticed the hypalon got pretty cut up on one of my best surf rods.Top idea mate and cheers for sharing.

i to thought beer bottle and if for no other reason to flatten the top its easier on the hand when belting deep into firm sand i have had a few sliced palms on a hacksaw finished pipe
