  1. This has me puzzled, I understand there is a regulation size for hoop nets, that being no more than 107cm wide and no more than 92 cm drop, but is there a regulation mesh size as well...I cant find any info on it. Reason I ask is I bought 3 Hoop nets used for the first time today, large mesh size and the Crabs seem to tangle in it too easily. They are already falling apart with the net segments breaking, fraying or unraveling. I have some extra strong Cargo net home which I was thinking about using to replace the sloppy netting that's on the shop bought ones, retaining the actual metal rin
  2. Your names not Sheldon Cooper by chance is it ?
  3. As Hoopsy says " stay safe and have fun i love being on the water its so relaxing and great theropy..Tightlines. " Great way to bond with your lad Cranky, pretty much the best memories of my father were out in the boat fishing, go for it mate
  4. I find O'Sullivans Beach excellent for many reasons and can launch at all tide times, but Garden Island is OK, just narrow lanes to back down and can get very busy, but the water is very sheltered, however the region is also shallow is spots.....but it's free Dont get too nervous about launch and retrieve, it's really very simple, just common sense...here's some advice.............. Tip, make yourself a basic list of procedures to follow so you forget nothing, it's easy to forget things when nervous and flustered, particularly if others are waiting to use the ramp. LAUNCH............
  5. I do believe we have all been suckered ?
  6. V goodly, I'm convinced, I'll go....now the next decision will be to take out the legal 3 crab nets + fishing gear for a Squid or two, or take out the max number of nets and leave the rods home....why is life so difficult to decide Trying to get my head around the legal limits on Crabs from a boat in Gulf of St Vincent ? So, it's 20 per person per day from shore, got that but I'm a little confused with boat regulations, some of the google links seem unclear.... for 2 people on board is the boat limit 40 per boat , or is it 60 ? ...or does the 60 per boat only apply if three persons a
  7. Planning on going out in the boat Wednesday with my brother primarily to seek out some crabs around the Brighton area weather permitting, seen a fellow come back with lots last week from the region so they are there somewhere ? The problem is the tides look rubbish on the day, and worse the next day, but the forecast is good for Wednesday..... do Crabs rely on tide much to be available from the boat using hoop nets ? ........... if you were in my shoes would you go despite tide or wait till the following week ?
  8. That's interesting, now I'm even more confused lol lol
  9. My opinion also. Plus.....who the hell are you ?....hit and run is morally intolerable
  10. I feel so ashamed.............spent several hours today fishing for Carp from Point Sturt and Claytons Snug Cove. 4 rods baited using Corn Nibblets, some stinky old Prawns and Cockles....not a single one.....I'll just go stand in the corner and hang my head in shame
  11. Enviable, and nice clam conditions to do it in as well
  12. Good stuff, might just have to lessen the carp numbers in the lakes this arvo. I know it used to be sold to Cray Fishermen, but unsure if it still is. Used to catch some monster Carp on light gear from around Clayton, all good fun.
  13. Anybody ever used Carp for Crab nets ? Planning on going out on the boat with my brother next week to try for some Blueys around Brighton/Glenelg region as there seems to be some in the area. Have to head down to Milang on lake Alexandrina tomorrow and thought about trying to get a few carp to use as Crab bait...will it work OK, or am I wasting my time ?
  14. Here's a very unorthodox Gar rig that works remarkably well when long casting for surface fish is the go. This rig as odd as it seems was shown to me by some local fishos who fish the Seaford area from shore. Using this rig made such a difference to catching very little in this region to catching a good bag every time. I presume it may be just as effective anywhere else, but Seaford is where it originated. The idea is simply attach a berley float by one hole only, why does it work so well ???....I think it's simply a case of the float tends to waggle a bit more in this configuration there
  15. Amazing how far upstream they are being sighted, including as far as Murray Bridge.....we are on the brink of an environmental catastrophe me thinks
  16. Yes it is, particularly in a semi- enclosed region like Gulf of St Vincent
  17. And to think if I were to dump rubbish into the ocean I would be prosecuted.
  18. Anchored/sunk I believe, but no fishing allowed anywhere around it or climbing on the structure according to a sign on it. The residents are generally very unhappy that it has not been removed, someone needs to take responsibility for it's removal
  19. Yep, it's still there and no plans to move it as far as I know
  20. I worked managing the RSPCA Marine Rescue of S.A. inc for 10 years and as such am pretty knowledgeable regarding marine mammals, handled, nursed and rehabilitated and tagged many Seals, Dolphins Penguins, Seabirds etc. Yes Seals of many species eat Penguins regularly, and yes it is a good chance they are responsible for the demise of the Victor Penguins Trivia ....just for your interest we used to capture a lot of Seals in my employ at the RSPCA and often the stomach contents revealed Penguin pieces, usually the feet and beaks were rejected in vomit. A Seal is very adept at catching an
  21. I suggested the population at Outer Harbour may be a seasonal thing, but the fellow I chatted with assured me that the Long-nosed Fur Seal { formerly NZ Fur Seal } were there permanently now. I was not aware until fairly recently just how big the herds are now around our shores, really got to wonder how long the gulf fish stocks can cope with that kind of population increase, and when that gets low do they then move onto the migrating bird populations ? Anyway, I know this subject is the hot topic for many rec and commercial fishers, and am beginning to understand why now. I actually worke
  22. Controversial issue I know, but I was chatting with some fellow from the local yacht club on Garden Island yesterday who told me there are now up to 200 Long-nosed Fur Seals on the end of the Outer Harbour Breakwater. Was surprised to her there is so many, anybody else confirm these kind of numbers in that region. Something to think about......200 seals consuming minimum of 5 kgs of fish/squid per day = 1000kgs per day .....7000 kgs per week.....364,000kgs per year He was also telling me the North Haven Boat ramp is to be closed and a new one built on the southern side of the Outer Ha
