  1. Yeah if you want a small rectangular footprint. Those racks are hard to beat. it can be hard slotting all you reels together. Especially if they all sit at the same height. I added feet to mine so they could handle big bait runners pulling the over
  2. I haven’t had a snell fail yet only possible issue is if you bind it the wrong direction around the hook eye or your hook eye has particularly sharp edges i just tie the simple version like Lee Rayner
  3. Just put them next to a decoy 1.5 - fat wire is strong wire - and for $5 you'd get around 200 clips instead of 13
  4. Also swapped the balls for barrels as I was worried about the balls getting in the way also switched to the hacksaw after someone mentioned health concerns with the grinder and lead fumes the smaller ones are 2 gram and the biggest is 10 - the middle are 7 gram
  5. Yeah I’ve started doing that aswell these clips are just for reddies so I dont need them to be too tough but I know what you mean about pliers deforming the clips. That’s part of the reason I made these ones easier to open with fingers on my heavy duty clips I still need pliers but they can handle the pliers much better than size zero
  6. Just trimming up some clips to make them easier to open with “winter fingers” these are little reddy clips so I’m not worried about strength
  7. Couldnt find heavy enough split shot for my weed lees hooks. So I had to improvise
  8. Yeah anything that mimics a gar wouldnt be a bad place to start. But colour shouldnt be a huge deal - the lures we used to chuck for pinkies were a mix of pinks - browns, and pumkin colour and they had no problems hitting those. I have watched them shadow huge schools of 3 inch sliver bait while diving - I imagine with a mouth that big and cutting teeth that sharp - everything is on the menu.
  9. We used to get alot of them while chasing pinkies on soft plastic lures - 3 to 4 inch - they are very good at cutting you off as they thrash their head when you go to net them or as they get close to the boat. Id almost consider a short wire trace if I was specifically targeting them on lures they can inhale - or use long thin Bibbed minnow lures with the middle treble removed. Just to keep their mouths away from your leader. I have seen them working gar schools in 3 to 4m of water - they are fun to watch getting fully airborne . So they have no problem smashing long thin fish like
  10. Yeah I havent tried those -Just found a pair of real cheap pliers Id forgotten about - and they cut better than the Kincrome.
  11. Yeah the Snub nose blue Berkleys are the best I have found - But having hook removal pliers, that can also cut untensioned braid has become my minimum standard for pliers these days
  12. I swear those handlers use rod tubes to practice their caber tossing Some cushion foam plugs - (far right) are a useful addition
  13. Yeah when I used to spear fish, the pause was definitely a trigger for me to go in for the kill. When a fish was feeding and puffing mouth fulls of sand through their gills - thats was when they were at their most vulnerable to a sneak attack. The silt and sand would cloud their vision and it showed they were concentrating on other things
  14. Yeah I had to hunt around for a left hand wind
  15. Thanks for the tip Mike - if it can handle kings - it will handle anything
  16. Most people start out bait fishing and the most difficult part of the process is winding the handle - so you naturally use your smartest hand to do it. I made the switch to left hand wind when I started fishing lures that needed your smartest hand flicking the rod tip. Just took a few sessions on the couch winding reels with my left hand, to create the muscle memory. It does feel very weird at first but I dont regret making the switch
  17. Yeah all my lines are Kast King now - from braid to the Flourocote leaders. I love a bargain - so I always look for the gems in the lower price Bracket - Kast king is one of those - Not as cheap as it used to be but I will continue to buy it if my bulk purchase ever runs out
  18. Ahh interesting - thanks Mate Yeah my version of a slow retrieve had heaps of pauses - I'll cut them out The constant fast retrieve with no pauses definitely got way more attention
  19. I recently had my first crack at surface redfin and noticed they would quickly wise up to a slow retrieve but would fire back up on one 3 times as fast. At the same time they would happily hit my soft plastic on a slow retrieve just beneath the surface but didnt want to know about a slowly retrieved popper Id love to hear your thoughts on retrieval speeds for Whiting on surface. Here’s the lure I was using
  20. Awesome article mate - very informative
  21. Heres and article on the "Timid" genes being passed on https://activeanglingnz.com/2015/09/17/do-fish-learn-to-avoid-baits-lures/
