  1. Cal,I have been given some advise regarding the prawn fishery in Gulf St Vincent. Apparently Spencer Gulf and out West are far more productive prawn areas. There has been only one trawler fishing Gulf St Vincent for a while now and it has closed before because it has never been very productive from the start in comparison.Just what I was told?TB
  2. From Fishie's link above the commercials agreed this was the best outcome for the prawn fishery. From the FRDC report yesterday it stated the following????? http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/national/spencer-gulf-snapper-in-decline/story-fndo1gb8-1226534888731Sounds like a bad case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing? The scary part is the FRDC advise our Ministers on said matters go figure?TB
  3. It's not neccessary to get rid of the commercial fishers many of whom do the right thing.I helped a pro handline fisher off the north coast back in the 90's who had a whiting licence and he was more aware of his impact than most reccies back then. He never fished a spot for more than 5 mins and never fished the same grounds consecutive days of the week. I was impressed with his ability to limit/spread his pressure on the stock.Problem was the trawlers made him unviable for 6 weeks every time they netted his grounds. I still remember the big meetings over the issue back then on KI.I see a simil
  4. http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/national/spencer-gulf-snapper-in-decline/story-fndo1gb8-1226534888731Two things come to mind here....if he hasn't seen the rise in annual commercial catch since 2005 in SA then he must have his head in the sand when stating 'environmental factors'? Secondly while ST Vincents gulf has been fairing better overall try catching snapper around Ardrossan like you used to 2 or 3 years back. That place has been hammered in recent years and not worth the trip over from Adelaide regarding snapper. Then there is the garfish and blue crabs that could do with some r
  5. I haven't had much trouble finding KGW's for two years now.Bagged out on them just recently and catches of up to 20 fish consistent all year except for in between the winter/summer season runs. I would gestimate that out of 20 trips we may have come back 3 times with zero tingers in the esky?If the whiting are near the legal limit then use a rag when handling them off the hook and measuring them as this should aid in releasing with less harm to the fish.Like most things fishing it's all about knowledge.TB
  6. All good points Jack...Not disputing the fishing opportunities from tinnies etc as they are great. Just that large boat sales and re-sells are down and overall affordability for reccies is becoming less viable for offshore boaters.CheersTB
  7. I guess at least Foodland are SA owned?TB
  8. Sign of the times unfortunately. Definately contributing factors for recreational fishing numbers falling in this state from 450' date='000 to 236' date='0000 since 1990.How many of us have large mortgages etc we will never pay off due to huge power/other service bills and rubbish levies that end up in general revenue? No wonder more and more are landbound as the boat becomes a distant priority.TB[/quote'']I dunno, boat ownership is one of them things that puzzles me.You don't need a 30k trailerboat. I had one sure. But getting rid of it didn't mean I had to be boatless forever. You can easily

  10. I think the permananet sites designated as sanctuary zones to be gazetted next year across both gulfs (in combination with the existing snapper closure) should be more than adequate if both sectors are managed properly.TB
  11. While I understand the sentiments here I would just like to clarify that sounding over these drops to see where snapper are schooling is good preparation that goes for the longliners as well.Secondly, mackeral are often found on these drops and fishing for them to gather baitfish is also good preparation.I see nothing wrong with being there and fishing using gear/baits that are not suitable for snapper. Barotrauma kicks in at around 11mtrs so anything over this depth and release becomes more difficult if a snapper does take an unintended bait.Lets hope those that can't help themselves in takin
  12. That fish grego would be pushing the biggest even known landed salmon. One flat summer's evening at Browns Beach back in the early 90's I landed one at just over 6kgs. I was 15 years old at the time and it gave me an awesome fight.TB
  13. Sorry I didn't get the time to post on here as well earlier...kids kept me busy.Jaffa certainly got me thinking this arvo that's for sure!I think the title and content of my first post was terrible in hindsight and for that I apologise. I don't want to advocate media censorship like some marxist and my advocacy for rec fishing gives me no right to imply that this would be acceptable. I can see how people would have seen my post in such a manner and taken offence. As a relatively young bloke its all a learning experience that 'hopefully' will sink in so I can become one of those old n wise coots
  14. So you see any 'non' commercial fisheries crime as being conducted by 'recreational fishers' not by 'criminals' even in a state where both sectors require a licence? IMHO there are commercial fishers, rec fishers and criminals that should not be classified publicly as either sector.End of story!TB
  15. I am not condoning his actions in any way and your assertion that I am because he didn't have a commercial licence is untrue.I have stuck up for commercial fishermen especially regarding MPA's on many occasions. In many instances it is the relevant authorites lack of management which has resulted in poor environmental outcomes and % allocation of marine resources for rec fishers not the pro fishers themselves.Jaffa, you will have to do better than a strawman argument.TB
  16. This is unacceptable because....1) Whether you have a rec licence or not in Port Phillip Bay is irrelevant in waters less than 2 meters for abalone.2) Regarding that last statement, this bloke was not a non licenced rec fisher or a licenced rec fisher he was a criminal.TB
  17. Why specify this bloke didn't have a recreational licence? This bloke didn't have a commercial licence either but that wasn't stated in this article from the VIC fisheries department?Should both media and gov departments be asked to explain their reasons for linking these actions with recreational fishers? We all know how such terminology gets twisted by the conservation groups etc....http://www.dpi.vic.gov.au/about-us/news/media-releases/category/fisheries/derrimut-man-jailed-for-abalone-theftTB
  18. Still unsure if your having a dig at me or not kon. Nah Kon is definately not having a dig at you Grazz. The interesting question is whats going to happen to the death ship now? How long will it remain in Pt Lincoln.BrettNo one is having a go at you Grazz.Your letter is ballsy and includes a lot of statements many would love to say themselves on said topic but only ever do behind the scenes.I understand your opinion and obvious motivation because it reminds me of 'me' especially a while back on unobstanciated Marine Park lockouts/claims along with some other fisheries issues.Knowing kon and nev

  23. I know that in metallurgy the determination as to whether a material is or isn't homogenous can be blurry to say the least at times. While many alloys are utilised because they are stronger or more suitable for in service use than homogenous structures there are also heat treatment processes etc that can make homogenous structures tough like their alloy competitors. As for utilising this defintion in a court of law for your benefit however, you may still want to have a few rec fishers on your sharking offence jury panel!
