  1. I haven't tried this with Blue Swimmer Crabs yet, but Mud Crabs done on mesh over an open fire worked for me...Always used to boil them previously, but following advice about how the Aboriginals cooked them on an open fire, I gave it a go and haven't looked back since. The texture and taste is totally different...Cheersaf
  2. Try Fisherman's Paradise, 250 Pirie Street, Adelaide (08) 8232 1440...Reckon I may have seen some there the other day, along with the Warlocks (but I could be wrong).Gotta love Rob Gaden's work, though...Cheersaf
  3. Any areas in Adelaide Metro worth hitting up tomorrow for LB snapper after the blow?Just wondering...af :S
  4. My thoughts go out to family and friends of those concerned. What worries me immensely though, is that these guys were in a Ski Boat (FFS!) in those conditions...http://au.news.yahoo.com/sa/latest/a/-/newshome/13362104/man-dead-another-missing-after-boat-capsizes-near-venus-bay/Let's hope that there are some lessons learnt here...af

  6. New Thread!!! New Thread!!!"What is the most disgusting thing you have ever eaten?"
  7. AFFBardis & Mash or a Bardi Hot Dog, my good man?Alternatively, would you care for a Witchetty Carpaccio and a salad of baby greens, touched up (ever so slightly) with a fresh grating of Tasmanian Wasabi?Your wish is my command...
  8. Witchetty's (Bardis) are a much bigger beast and found in a totally different environment - the body segments are also distinctly thicker...http://www.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://25.media.tumblr.com/0UNbchwcco5atpzm00VxIRPXo1_500.jpg&imgrefurl=http://asunburntcountry.tumblr.com/post/115758912/idledays-the-raw-witchetty-grub-tastes-like&h=280&w=420&sz=14&tbnid=1e0sH4yVVGogDM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=135&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dwitchetty%2Bgrub%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=witchetty+grub&docid=Ut1pY1U_Rk4pzM&sa=X&ei=wox5T4yhLuHZigfmyNXuBA&ved=0CD
  9. Cheers samboman...I'll check them out next time I'm down that way.
  10. Apparently, these are new from Berkley:http://www.purefishing.com.au/baits/3b-crank-baits/3b-prawn-dog/Does anybody know if they're available at any tackle shops around town? I have tried some of my "usual suspects", so far without success...Cheersaf
  11. Good one, Meggsy...you've got us all diving for our references again.I'm calling this one a Victorian Scalyfish (Parma Victoriae):http://www.reefwatchvic.asn.au/maps/scalyfin_fc.htmCheersaf
  12. My best guess is a Coleman's Weedfish (Heteroclinus sp. 4). My reference is: p703 "FISHES of Australia's Southern Coast" - edited by Martin Gomon, Dianne Bray and Rudie Kuiter [2008]. An earlier edition of a similar book [1994] tends to support my guess - however, I can't locate any images on the 'net which closely approximate the illustrations in the book(s).Cheersaf
  13. ...also, this:http://www.amlrnrm.sa.gov.au/News/Mediareleases/2012.aspxCheck out Media Releases for 7th March and 21st March 2012.Can only be good news for the health of the rivers.Cheersaf
  14. This from last week:http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-03-22/rivers-flush-trial-flows-torrens/3905372
  15. Heard this morning on Ian Henschke's programme on 891 ABC that there will be an environmental flow release in the Onk from Clarendon early in April (for 5 days commencing 1st or 2nd). Haven't been able to locate news or a media release on the AMLRNR site or the ABC site just yet, but I'll keep looking...Meanwhile, page 4 of this link should give you an idea of waht they're going to do:http://www.amlrnrm.sa.gov.au/Portals/2/Water/EnvironmentalFlows/Onkaparinga_LoRES.pdfCheersaf
  16. Noticed in a Newsagent this morning another fishing mag entering a seemingly already crowded market. It's called "FishLife". (Check out the attached link, if you're interested - there are some of the "usual suspects" in the list of contributors.)http://www.fishlife.tv/Cheersaf
  17. 1. Gamakatsu2. Daiichi3. Mustad (a good, readily-obtainable and generally reliable all-rounder)
  18. Not wrong there, TF & KR about the slow lift...As an inexperienced youngster, I launched my first Sooty Grunter w-a-a-a-y up into the branches of an overhanging gum tree. With a rod that long, you can certainly get a fair bit of leverage!
  19. Used to use Rangoon Cane rods when I was a little tacker fishing with my parents up in North Queensland. The line (roughly the same length of the rod) was tied directly to the end of the rod, then fitted with a cork float, some small split shot and a hook appropriate to what ever species were being targetted (generally FW species like Sooty Grunter, Catfish, Archerfish, Spangled Perch, etc.). Simple, but effective...As a matter of interest, I Googled "rangoon cane rods" and came up with this link:http://www.chsmith.com.au/Products/Rangoon-Cane-Poles.htmlIt seems there may still be a demand (ho
  20. As a matter of interest, has anybody on this site tried W.A. Dhufish? As a premium saltwater fish, it's supposedly the "duck's guts" and the last time I was over in W.A. a few years ago, it was around the $70 a kg mark (gettin' into Rock Lobster territory, there!).http://www.westernangler.com.au/fishing-info/fish-guide/153-dhufishCheersaf
  21. G'day SoftyI reckon there was a similar topic to this some time ago...It's a hard call, given there are any number of factors that come into play, e.g. freshness of the fish, method of cooking, herbs & spices added, etc., etc....Nonetheless, if you are talking about a simple grilled fish with nothing more than a squeeze of lemon/lime juice and salt and pepper, my nominations are:Saltwater: Mangrove Jack or the humble GarfishFreshwater: Mouth Almighty or Sleepy CodAsk me again tomorrow, and you'd probably get a different response... Cheersaf P.S. Apologies if there is a perceived Queensla
  22. Hi LiamCheck out this link:http://www.tourkangarooisland.com.au/lib/docs/mf668.pdfCheers & Good Luckaf
  23. jb86There's some good general info. on Cairns fishing on this site:http://www.fishingcairns.com.au/index.html(including a fishing calendar). Generally speaking, April isn't one of the "better" months up there, but - hey - if you haven't got a line in the wet stuff, you'll never really know, will you?I agree with aff - check out Erskines while you're up there:http://www.tackleworld.com.au/qld/erskine.htmlCheers and Good Luckaf
