  1. I've been chased by tigers and had browns slither away too, but I've only encountered a couple and not enough to say definate. Ranger seems to know his stuff though, I'm not gonna go "don't worry its only a brown!" I've had a tiger try and climb up my paddle will kayaking near cobdogla. That was one time I wasn't gonna freeze!
  2. It was originally a very old rod. It belonged to an eldery gentleman who passed away about 7 year ago and it was rescued from his shed and refurbished then. I won it in a raffle with an old wooden spooled alvey with no drag just the diret drive. So I wouldn't be surprised if its 50 years old, possibly more.
  3. Well its all done now and it was suprisingly easy. I dont think very good glue was used. I even manged to get the rod seat off without damaging it. I've started sanding it back but then I got hungry and here I am. I'm sure once I've sanded it back and its ready to start putting back together I will have some more questions. Thanks for your help! Karma point for you.
  4. no sand spike on this one. All my alvey rods have had no sand spike. Just a short butt and the reel mount very low down. I want to put a sand spike on it befor I'm done though.
  5. I know how to do the eyelets and bindings (I've done that before). Thanks for the info on the reel seat. Now all thats left is the wooden butt. How should I go about this? Thought about maybe doing it the same way as you mentioned the reel seat But it is a pretty old blank so don't wanna damage the blank. Is there any other way to remove wooden grips?
  6. I've got an old surf rod That I was looking at this afternoon. It is set up for an alvey at the moment but I only use My alvey mulloway fishing or fishing off cliff tops and I have another better/heavier actioned rod that. I wanna strip it down and make a rod suitable for an overhead for salmon. I need to put a few more eyelets in and move the rod mount up the blank. Is this possible? I now there will be people out there that will say it is a waste of time/money/effort but to them I say phooey. Is there something you can use to dissvolve the resin without damaging the glass?
  7. I've always thought that one in a tank would be great, that just onfirmed it! might have to try and keep one alive next time. I know it is illegal but I can't see a problem with it if your just gonna put it in a tank. Has anyone had any issues with fisheries etc?
  8. Haven't done too much fly fishiong but found wet flies with bright colours such as red, green and especially yellow to be the best. They can be big fly's too, don't go too small.
  9. Agree with finatic, doesn't look good for squid and cuttlefish. Something needs to be done, just hope that the same thing doesn't happen to our squid and cuttle stocks.
  10. We call them a boxfish, but I have heard them been called a cowfish befor. I always try and release unwanted fish very quickly but I can't resist turning one upside down on the deck for just a few seconds!
  11. I've fished up there quite a lot and all I've caught is redfin. But they will take a fly. I got a few on fly up there but I was just starting to get into it and my wand got stolen. Fly's with yellow on them seemed to be the best.
  12. I'd give pt riley a go. I have caught plenty of snapper to 4 kg of the rocks there (and just as many small bronzies). I'm thinking of giving it a go soon. Cape elizabeth would be a good spot too. Been out there once but only caught big salmon and little kingfish.... oh well.
  13. So there are squid in west lakes? Someone told me there were a few years ago but after asking about it on another forum and getting shot down in flames I just put it down to BS. Maybe I should give it a crack. Is there anywhere in particular to give it a go?
  14. The south para reservoir is a good spot to go if your just starting. With the water been so low at the moment all the trees are a long way back. There's some good redfin in there, even if not as many as a few years ago when the water was up. And its only about 15min from 1 tree hill. Its on the kersbrook to williamstown rd almost to williamstown.
  15. Personally I would call anything under 1kg a salmon trout and anything over a salmon.
  16. Metwurst is a guy I used to work with gun mullet bait. Weird about the mulloway on tomatoe though!
  17. Friends of ours own a tackle store and i asked for some cockles and they said they were $12 for a packet that fitted in the palm of your hand. They also said they opened up one of the said packets and it had 15 cockles in it! I said i would use somethin else.
  18. I've caught heaps but unfortunatly the undersize ones would outnumber the legal ones 100 to 1! I know there are good fish to be caught but based on my experience its only good for teachin kids to fish... At least you know your gonna catch somethin!
