  1. Back in the early 70's I caught a huge bream under the Torrens Island bridge on a live mullet intended for mulloway, its tail was sticking out of a twenty litre white bucket and at a guess it might have gone 50+ (but I didn't measure it). When I first saw it I thought it was a snapper, but definitely a big black bream on closer inspection. It swam away to fight another day after a few minutes reviving boat side, and I have never seen one as big since. If one was caught over 55, it would have been impressive, not something that you would just toss on the bank, especially now when fish like that are scarcely caught at all. If its true, then that's another story and a great catch, but still deserving of better treatment.regards snapdragin

  5. This probably doesnt count as I never actually landed it!, but my most memorable fight was with a huge smoothy off the little jetty at Port Julia. I fought it on a jarvis walker snapper rod (solid glass) and a large tatler reel from the UK with 50lb mono (schnieder) which lasted for 6 hrs. I hooked it at 6pm and the never saw it until about 11pm, I knew it was big as it felt like it was just patrolling its beat for the first few hours, like it wasnt even hooked, so I uped the anty and gave it some stick , which just made it mad and it took off for Adelaide. It ran for twenty minutes , stripping all but 20 or so meters of line off the reel, then turned south and with lots of pressure I had it by the jetty about midnight. It then tried to go between the pylons at the end and hit both poles on either side, it backflipped and the line went ping. I fell backward almost off the other side of the jetty LOL. The next morning I measured between the pylons and it was 9'6". I have caught numerous rays since but that was the most memorable, except for being pinned at the end of Turton jetty watching helplessly as a 1000m of 60lb line was stripped off a 10/0 senator in what seemed like seconds, thank god for a mate who cut the line or I would have been skiing towards lincoln.

  6. @ Ugly4Life, I agree, decimating the stocks when the ban comes off is a huge problem, one that the government have created because the commercials cant fish for a month, the same as us (although we still have limits). They want to make up for the loss of a months income in a short time and still be able to get that months income as well. What they dont seem to be able to work out is that they dont earn as much because they flood the market and get $3 a kilo, so then they have to catch more! Quadrupling the effort and the catch only returns about twenty to twenty five percent for that effort ? just seems rediculous to me (work four times as hard for a quarter of the money). A simple solution would be to catch so much a week or month, and get great returns, which add up to a yearly quota, and just fish normally after the ban to maintain that return. Unfortunately greed gets the better of them when the snapper are there for the taking and they are allowed to do it. The big question is, How much snapper do they need to catch to maintain public supply and good returns all year and not decimate the stocks after the ban. As I said its a simple way to look at it, and I know that there are other factors which need to be considered, license fees, fuel, equipment costs, bait and registrations etc, but surely there must be a solution that works for them and for us.

  7. Snapper in decline, then its about time they set sustainable yearly quotas for commercials and proffessionals, instead of limiting recreationals further. Recreationals have been dealt with pretty harshly in the overall scheme of things, bag limits, boat limits, and now pssession limits as well as bans etc, and even MPs and NTZs, maybe they should consider these types of limits on the commercial sector before its too late. I dont mind sharing the blame, but I'm sick and tired of being the only one targetted for limits, they take from us (recreationals) and then the commercials just increase there effort and there catches. End result is that the snapper are being caught in greater numbers by them and the limits placed on us is doing absolutly nothing for the snapper stocks.

  8. I dont know if, and cant say for sure either way whether this person broke the rules or not, but I am aware that many recreational anglers have tried to report recreational fishers for doing the wrong things, taken photos etc, only to be told that it wont stand up in court. They were also told they wouldnt use said photos etc as they have to catch them in the act. Now unless this person admitted to the charges as stated, or was caught in the act by PIRSA, how was he charged with said offence, as the case against him is hear say and private photo evidence. I believe that this was trial by media and conviction by fear. PIRSA put themselves in this position with a stupid kneejerk reactionary law, and because of the media hype had to act, whether it was right or not?. As has been stated, if he used a monofilament line and a hook within the specifications, then no law broken, therefore no charge. These are my thoughts on the matter only, and if indeed he did break the law, he as far as I know still had to be caught in the act. Although this governemnet are good at changing the goal posts as needed.regards snapdragin

  9. Maybe she should start encouraging hand feeding of those peaceful GWs by those conservationists, hand feeding them GWs, I mean those fluffy sea kittens. Lets see if any jump in with a fluffy sea kitten when they are hungry and excited by fresh fish LOL.I notice that she never acted on that feeling of I'm not going to bite you, more like a mis-understanding.

  10. Dipping in the water earths the rod and discharges the voltage accumulated in the rod, an old fisherman once told me he used to fish regular in very unfriendly weather so used to dangle an earth lead from the boat into the water just in case of a strike. He attached it to the base of his ariel at the highest point of the boat, much like a lightning rod. I'm not so sure that I would like to try it, but hes still here (87yrs old) and still fishing!regards snapdragin

  11. I have never caught a bream over 38cm, but a very long time ago (70s), I and two mates wittnessed one well over sixty caught on a live mullet meant for mullaway off the torrens island bridge. When we first saw it we thought it was a snapper, but once on the bridge realised that it was a bream. It was so deep and long that it wouldnt fit in the old guys bucket, a white twenty ltr job, so he took it down on the bank and let it go. There were several others watching and it nearly caused a fight when he let it go, truly amazing catch and release. I have never seen one like it since.snapdragin

  12. I have just read through your posts on this thread, and I was just wondering, who do you expect to represent you and all anglers for nothing. SARFAC are a government funded organisation, and as you know underfunded and understaffed, and I believe with this distinct disadvantage they do a fantastic job for our benefit. But lets face it , if we anglers truley want the representation we deserve, then dont expect much for nothing, otherwise pick up the phone and join. It costs about $55.00 to be a non active member, $120.00ish if you want to be an active member, and remember if you pay you have a say. Even 20,000 members will raise the funding to SARFAC significantly, enough to represent us in the way we deserve, and the more members the greater the voice, then you will get politicians jumping on board, 236000 votes is what they are after, and having that large a group of voters is very desirable to pollies!!!!!You want that kind of representation, then put your money on the table, JOIN SARFAC.I am a member and my son has just joined, its a small price to pay, its up to you, if you want to save fishing for yourself and future sons , daughters, families, just do it.regards snapdragin

  13. Once many years ago I was fishing a creek not far from renmark with some friends, It was just after dark and after rebaiting a cod line had stopped to have a bite to eat, suddenly all hell broke loose and the reel started screaming. Then I remembered that I hadnt cast the bait into the water , about twenty minutes later after chasing whatever it was through the bushes and trees and all over the place I landed a possum hooked fair and square in the mouth, funny didnt think possums ate fish, maybe they do. Anyway possum was released relatively unharmed but I had severe scratches and slashes up my arms that required a visit to the hospital and a booster shot.looking back it was very funny, but at the time NOT.regards snapdragin :laugh::laugh:
