Rickster 0
Almost looks like a mud skipper.
afishyfish 4
It looks to me like a type of Goby, and if that's right Ricksters answer is probably very close, because I'm pretty sure they're related ;)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goby Rickster
brenton 637
I'm pretty sure its a male Port river Goby, they are a distinct species endemic to the port. Its a bit hard to tell because i'm colour blind but the males have purple stripes and the females are basically brown cheers brenton
Moggy23 625
Maybe a Twospot Goby

brenton 637
Now I can't even find it on Google.:c cheers brenton
snake 1
my god that thing looks ugly in the last pic!! looks like its got some type of freaky mans face!!! never seen one before
Peelin 0
Not protected are they? Big bream love the small ones.Yet to intentionally use them as bait but on a few occasions have been catching a few of those ugly suckers only to have them smashed on the retrievePS Brenton I'm colour blind too, very. Do you find you spot fish heaps better than your lesser evolved fishing mates?
brenton 637
I think they are protected, and if not they should be.I know they are great bait for bream in fact the bloodworm wriggler is a pretty good Goby imitation especially on a lift and drop retrieve because that is the way Gobies behave. As for spotting fish yes it does have some advantages,i can also spot game better such as Roos but just don't ask me to pick your fruit.....i'll pick all the green ones. cheers brenton
Tako 0
I've found the baby version of this Goby many times in salmon trout in the port. Interesting to hear they are a distinct port river species.
brenton 637
I think this is a female or juvenile male,i just read on another site that they are a distinct species so i wouldn't bet my farm on it. cheers brenton
chuckemback 0
isnt it a congolli?
jimbojames 285
Iv'e caught a few of those in the onk . Well they look very similar an my first though was it looked like a goby of some sort anyway .
brenton 637
I've seen them down the Onk,they colour right up during breeding season and almost look like Siamese fighting fish, they have longer tails and fins than the ones from the Port, which i'm calling the Port River Goby.....for now. cheers brenton
spog777 1
Port river Goby - thats what Dad used to call em so thats my guess
Guest
Jimbojamesthere's used to be lots of that type in westlakes. Not sure whether there still as. Think possibly when they filled the lake with fresh water to kill that weed it might have killed the gobies as well.I do stand corrected on that though.
Rollas 2
A Port River Gobby.....Sounds like a great bedtime story...
archerfish 685
Got it! (I think )I'm reasonably sure it's a Crested Oyster Goby (Cryptocentroides gobiodes)- see link below:http://australianmuseum.net.au/Crested-Oyster-Goby-Cryptocentroides-gobioides-Ogilby-1886(Be sure to view the pictures full size.)If this is what it is, then it's certainly a little way out of its usual range! (Still, there's a bloody Sun Fish down at the Port, so nothing surprises me...all sorts of weird s*it happening lately  .)Cheersaf
