we managed to find tuna schooling everywhere from the bottom of yorkes to the back of KI.Most were around 10-13kg with a few better ones coming in at around 16-18kg

That sounds promising,we used to catch tuna out wide off Glenelg when I was a kid in the early seventies on our snook lines. Maybe oneday soon they might start venturing up the Gulf again (can only hope {SMILIES_PATH}/cheesy.gif )

Some nice SBT's fellas, I'd love to get around to chasing some one day.I have caught Northern Bluefin Tuna though, fishing out from Hervey Bay. Never landed any huge ones, but plenty that have been great fun on 6 to 10kg spinning gear. We use metal slugs, casting to the fish as they break the surface....GREAT fun. I never got around to taking many pics as we were always too busy getting into them when we had located a school. Here's a pic of an average size NBT. Posted Image

found another pic on me comp so thought why not? {SMILIES_PATH}/wink.gifIt was fairly expensive to charter around for 4 days to chase tuna, but i heard Pt Mac has day charters for around $250 or something when the run starts down south?Does anyone know of any charters down that way? size=356http://www.fishyorkepeninsula.com/images/attachments/2WpzaqCO__tuna_time.JPG[/img]

Hi All, Im new here, great website. I was fishing on Reef Encounters charter on 7.04.08, when Mark asked us if anyone wanted to come on a Tuna chase the next day. My girlfriend , brother in law and I jumped at the chance. I was lucky to get this 17.5kg, last hook up of the day and my first ever Tuna. I will never forget it and cant wait to get out there again size=1024http://www.fishyorkepeninsula.com/images/attachments/YKDWvKEg__Reef_Enounters_April_08_084_compressed.jpg[/img]

I caught this Northern Blue up in Nhulunbuy where I was working. It was taken in about 2-3 meters of water and about 200mtrs from shore. I was ready to settle in and get a few more but the skipper had better ideas. Spent the rest of the day stop/starting looking for other species. ::)CheersJim size=414http://www.fishyorkepeninsula.com/images/attachments/FFmrzffk__NorthernBlueFin.jpg[/img]

I don't think so, I have not even touched that tuna. But as it was caught on my boat in Italy I thought I would send the photos. Hopefully next year, when I am there for a month, I can get a shot at one! In the meantime I will keep hoping to get one here around Portland or Port Mac, where they have been caught to around 120kg. Though not very common.Opti
