  1. Keep trying Micky, as the salmon trout should be around this time of year. I tried Garden Island near the boat ramp and had a few follows from small mullet and gar but they wouldn't take a fly. Every now and then they would spook and leap from the water all at once and I thought maybe the ST's were about but alas it was a few shags that were feeding on them. No wonder they wouldn't take a fly, maybe next time.Cheers, Dave.
  2. Fishnuts, I use reels with disc drags and ball bearings and agree there is a major difference to the average trout reel. I just recently bought 3 reels NOS(new old stock)all 4 weights with disc drag and ball bearings $60 the lot. The bargains are there, you just have to search. Here's a pic, sorry about the quality of the pic.Cheers, Dave.
  3. I agree Roger, there is absolutely no need to spend a fortune on gear. I have never paid more than $150 for a rod and $100 for a reel as there is absolutely no need. There are low priced rods and reels that get very favorable reviews on English and European websites, having a look on such websites is a great way to find good gear that works and doesn't cost the earth. I'm going to Spotlight now to stock up on fly tying materials. :icon_e_biggrin: :icon_e_biggrin: :icon_e_biggrin:Cheers, Dave.
  4. Thanks Tonyb.Cheers, Dave.
  5. RogerG, you mention you are up near Clare, what's Inchiquin Lake like nowadays as I haven't fish it for years.Cheers, Dave.
  6. That's a very nice flattie, well done. I haven't had a whiting on a popper yet but I have had gar going ballistic and attacking my popper fly. Perhaps I should tie some smaller poppers and get myself a feed of gar.Cheers, Dave.
  7. Hi mick, those hooks as I understand are a 'wet' fly hook for tying sinking flies whereas the B170 model is for 'dry' or floating flies. They are very popular with the trout fisho's and considered a very good hook.Cheers, Dave.PS. I read the post on the other site. Don't be brain washed into believing that small hooks = small fish. If that was true no big trout would ever be caught on a small fly, fish the size fly you are confident with and works for you.
  8. Well done Micky, keep 'em coming.Cheers, Dave.
  9. Well done John, that's a lot bigger than the ones I've been catching at Mawson Lakes. A little pink nymph is the fly doing the damage for me. Here's a pic. sorry about the picture quality.Cheers, Dave.
  10. I was sight fishing in a small pond that joins the main lake at Mawson Lakes. Lost one fish when my knot came undone and landed another about 30cms long on a little pink nymph. When I get some more batteries for my camera I will post a picture of the fly.PS. Tonka, when you see the carp feeding put the fly about a 30cms in front of the fish. If they are cruising mid water it might pay to try suspending the wet fly under a large dry fly.Cheers, Dave.
  11. I've seen a Mel Krieger one around but it wasn't cheap. If anyone wants a cheap one for learning to cast try and get the "basic fly casting" dvd from ebay UK, I have it and it is easy to understand.Cheers, Dave.
  12. I have 'Botham on fly' too Micky. "A river somewhere" is well worth a watching too.Ranger, any idea what the dvd was called, Ienjoy a good fly fishing dvd.Cheers, Dave.
  13. For all you guys new to fly fishing there's a dvd that will put you on the right track. It's called Gillies introduction to fly fishing and it's presented by the well known fly angler Peter Morse. It covers all the basics and is the perfect thing to get you started. Here's the link.http://cgi.ebay.com.au/DVD-EXPERT-TUITION-ON-FLYFISHING-WHAT-BAIT-TO-USE_W0QQitemZ350176828843QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Sport_Fishing_Fly_Fishing?hash=item350176828843&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318Cheers, Dave.
  14. Speaking of spotlight, there are packs foam paddle pop sticks ($2) of various colours that can be used to make floating flies. Also there's a lady in the spotlight near me whose friend has peacocks and she got me about 6 of those big tail feathers for free, I'll see if I can get some more.Cheers, Dave.
  15. Great idea, let us know where and when.Cheers, Dave.

    Booby fly

Yes Micky, it's the foam Morsie was using for his foam poppers. Thanks for the tip about lenght of the fly, I'll have to experiment with that.cheers, Dave.

    Booby fly

Just tied this booby fly, going to tie a range of colours once I get some more marabou. I used the foam Morsie recommends for poppers to make the eyes. I'm going to fish it on a fast sinking line down deep and the foam eyes will keep it off the bottom, hopefully the red-fin in my local lake and the bream in the estuary will eat them. Cheers, Dave.
  18. Micky, when you put that one in the water I hope it gets gobbled by that elusive mulloway, good luck on Saturday morning.Cheers, Dave.
  19. Well done Micky, you're a brave man trying to fly fish in that wind.Keep on catching.Cheers, Dave.
  20. Tiny foam surface popper flies are all the rage in the fly fishing world at the moment.Cheers, Dave.
  21. I have to disagree with that because in shallow water 2-4 feet fly fisho's have been targeting whiting with surface poppers and having quite a bit of success. I have also caught them on my garfish rig at North Haven which I set at about 4 or 5 feet off the bottom.Cheers, Dave.
  22. Micky, try having your leader around the same length as your rod or a foot longer. As for hooks a lot of experienced flyfishers use aberdeen model hooks, a size 6 would be ideal for your 6 weight rod.Cheers, Dave.
  23. He uses a small wet fly called a buzzer.I don't have a copy of the article unfortunately as I only read it in the news agents while waiting for my girlfriend.Cheers, Dave.
  24. I've only caught yellow eye mullet on small red flies, try a buzzer style pattern in red about a size 10 or 12. Also flylife magazine has an article by Steve Starling on catching mullet and garfish on fly.Cheers, Dave.
