  1. I grew up using mono in the surf, but went to braid about five years ago. I love braid for throwing lures, but when it comes to heavy surf rigs i really dont know what i prefer. I honestly think mono and braid both have their advantages in the heavy surf. I still use braid with about 2-3m of shock leader, so i guess ive decided thats the best for me. I have heard a few stories of braid not having enough give, and a nice mully shaking hooks:angry: If youve already got a saltiga that would be an awesome reel, as long as you dont mind getting a bit of spray and fine sand on and in such a nice bit
  2. Sounds like a good design youve got there piranha.I like the idea of a dedicated berley line, dont like the thought of a noah having a chomp at a berley pot on my anchor rope:(
  3. Good retrieve On that Alvey. Would be handy for throwing chrome slices at Elliston salmon
  4. Meant to press reply, not thank you on your last post. Bloody touch phones!! Sounds like all you need is your dog to run away and you could write a country and western song, you're not having much luck there Nev!!As mentioned before spitting in the goggles will stop them from fogging up. Works for me when diving. It annoys me when new stuff doesn't work properly, and seems far too common in today's throw-away society
  5. Thanks guys for your help. I thought I had read about some sort of spray lacquer(spelling?!!!) that could be used on rods, but I guess I shouldn't be so lazy and mix some of the two part stuff to use!!Cheers
  6. Gday all. I have some old rods that have lost some coating around the feet of the guides, and I would like to get some epoxy on them to seal things up again. I thought i read on here ages ago about some gear in a spray can, but after a quick search i cant find anything. Is there a spray epoxy that would be suitable, or is the stuff you mix in two parts the best.Ive also wiped the rods down with inox, so what would be the best way to clean this off to get the resin to stick? Is metho or thinners too harsh to wipe on the rod?Cheers rooboy
  7. BDO, how do the glass lenses hold up? Im keen on a decent pair of polaroids, but was a bit worried how the glass lenses would go with a bit of rough treatment.Cheers
  8. Nice red mate. We're in the middle of harvest at the moment, so I had to look at that pic while standing in a warm dusty paddock. Bugger!!!If I get a few like him I'll be happy
  9. Replied to your pm. Thanks guru!!!!!!!
  10. Thanks mate, some good info there. I have a 2-4kg diablo and I love it. Use it for whiting, but have also caught some fun size salmon on it. I'm hanging out to have a go at some ruggers with it. Haven't heard of that Abu rod but it sounds like I should look it up. Looks like I'm riding on the coat tails of your research!!Cheers
  11. G'day strikehookers. I'm in the market for a new sp rod for some decent sized reds(hopefully!). Rod will be matched to an old certate 4000, running 20lb. I see there is a WTB thread that could cover some of what I'm looking for. My budget will be up to $250. Also wouldn't mind a fantasy list, just in case I win the lotto or if Nanna's Chrissy card is real good this year!! So maybe two lists of suggestions, one for the real world and one for yahoo I'm rich bitch!!Thanks and merry Christmas rooboy
  12. Ha ha ha. Read that post sober, loved it!! Read it again after a few tonight, loved it more. Spilt dancing bear blood will crack me up every time. Think the live fibres are on for a good price at the moment. Dont have one, but have only heard really good things. my uncle has one and bloody loves it
  13. Just read my post, i would have a light running sinker with the live bait, not unweighted.Guess i should proof read before i press the submit button!!!
  14. I have read that about red being the fist colour to dissapear underwater, have also heard that it is BS as well!! Like most things in fishing you can get differing stories. With mono i have always stuck to the plain old clear colour, and reckon it its ok.If your fishing off a jetty with a berley trail you can try unweighted bait, such as a pillie or hunk of fresh sqiud no worries. Even a live bait unweighted could be the go. If you want to use a bit of weight a light running sinker might be better than a patternosta if the water isnt running too hard.Bring on the end of the month!!!
  15. Cool mate. This is why i love these forums, team work gets shit sorted!!That clip can be bent so that it has enough pressure to stay where its meant to be. Its hard and springy though. To me it seems to be a strange way to to the job,but im no guruGuess we betta stop with the hijack on this thread
  16. hey FL, i doubt if it would be very important to the reel.My reel is a 4500h catalina, so not the same as yours, but the clip looks exactly the same.took a picture on the phone, so this might help if i can load it up
  17. mate that little clip goes on the inside of the spool to put tension on the line holder(dont know what they are called, but that guitar pick thing that clips your loose line)Know this coz mine came off when i swiped my finger inside the spool and it got caught under my nail. OUCH!!
  18. Id go the 50lb as well. If u are looking at shimano sizing i would opt for the 8000 over the 6000. The extra line capacity doesnt come with extra reel weight. For some reason the specs show that the 6000 sizes are heavier than the 8000 in a lot of models!! I know it was like that with my stradicI reckon the bit bigger reel might save chasing a king all over the bay
  19. I love the Starlo stix shorespin. 9ft, sweet for the ting and other smaller fishies. Also a little ripper for throwing smaller(40gms) chromies at salmon.Best part is they are a good price. If you have a decent 7ft rod already i reckon you would be suprised at how far they can flick out a little sinker and bait.Sounds like you are getting keen for this warmer weather!!
  20. Ha ha. Beat me by 3mins shark fisho!!I agree with the leader suggestions in your previous post. They are pretty much what i use for the heavy stuff. Also like a bit of platypus(go Aussie)
  21. Yeah, fluro is meant to be a lot less visiable underwater. Something to do with light refraction/reflection?? Im no boffin!!!Also is pretty good on abrasion resistance
  22. I also wouldnt mind knowing what style of single you are using. Ive got a few lures i want to convert. Cheers
  23. Yeah it is a very pricey little trip that one. My wife is originally from KI, so we get stung every time we go back and see her family. Even if we get her dad to book with the "family and friends" discount, it is still fairly rich.Be alright if they stopped for a fish halfway!!!Thing is once you are on the island you dont care how much it cost to get there, its such a beautiful part of the world. The lesson is dont marry a KI girl. Between the boat trips, and getting their second head removed, they end up being expensive!
  24. Nice ink there fellas Pretty handy having that bloke next door Brent. Could also be a bit too easy to keep getting work done!!Happy dirty thirty FushLups
  25. Not to hijack a thread, but im looking for a similar reel. How much can a sol/heartland 2500 constantly handle? Im looking at biggish snaps(5kg+), west coast salmon and a barra trip when i save the coin. Would also need to be a whiting and lighter sp reel. I was thinking 3000 would be more the size. Guess im coming from the same angle as Old Salty, this will be a long term reel, so i want to get it right.Hard to get that balance of weight, power and versatility
