  1. I looked at the 110MH and it was to soft in the tip and indicated a lure weight range of 20 - 60g from memory. The XH says up to 150g but that's way too heavy. I grabbed the XH and it seems spot on for the lure weight range mentioned above. I've also tied on an Over there 130 skipping stick bait and that went a mile. I'd have no issues with using this set up with a pillie and a 4 oz sinker so handy as a back up bait rod. I put an emblem pro reel on it and it was too heavy, so a standard 4000 Daiwa or 6000 Shimano reel would balance fine if not using one of the compact long cast reels.
  2. Look at the Pro Cargo SS4500 reel as an option if you want to stay with Daiwa as its roughly the same weight as the Ultegra CI4+ XTB that I have. Either reel will balance well and the whole set up is very light.
  3. Just purchased a Daiwa Lateo 110XH and matched it to a Shimano Ultegra 5500 reel running 20lb 832 braid. It gets out the back! 40g to 65g lures are ideal, feels like it can go either side of this weight wise, but this range is sweet.
  4. I've been using the red Gomoku's in spin with a Diawa 2500 and the overhead with a Daiwa Pluton for whiting where there's a chance of something bigger coming along, otherwise a Shimano Bushy's bait legend "Go to" 6' 3-6kg spin rod with a 2500 daiwa reel for tinny and kayak fishing. I like these because they're all suited to leaving in a rod holder with circle hooks as well as traditional stand and deliver fishing with long shank hooks. I don't mind fishing slightly heavier gear for whiting as it gives me a sporting chance on larger stuff. For whiting, I'd spend a bit less on the rod, because t
  5. Have a look at the Daiwa blast rods: http://daiwafishing.com.au/products/blast-rods/ The 61S- 2/3 might suit.
  6. Haven't tried a wind on, but have been using an FG knot for several seasons without issue on my Abu7000 and Calcutta 700. I have 20lb on the Abu and 30lb braid on the Calcutta and run 60lb Jinkai leader for both lure and bait fishing.
  7. I have been using twisted droppers, both single and double for bottom bashing and singles in the surf for a while now and have had no issues. I have been using the larger (7/0 and 8/0) gamakatsu circle hooks with these set ups and they work a treat. Like Kelvin, I only use these on heavier traces. I find I can use 60lb twisted where as I would otherwise have used 80lb with a non twisted dropper. They hang in there a bit longer on the Nannies, (Bight red fish) as well. Combined with a star sinker with a swivel built in, I get a lot less tangles in the surf.
  8. Youcanahandafishabetterspanner. Yeah, I've heard of some weird and whacky things used to catch fish, like a coke can cut up and trolled like a skirt for tuna (didn't work as it fell apart, but looked the goods) and minti wrappers on hooks used to catch nannies etc. An old timer up the coast in NSW when I was a kid used old spark plugs with a treble attached to spin for tailor. Had an old split cane rod and an equally ancient Alvey reel, and could catch fish! Almost feel a "what's the strangest thing you've caught a fish on" thread coming.
  9. We troll these 8-10cm lengths of plastic tubing in 4 or 5mm with an O'Shaunessy hook behind boats and kayaks for salmon. They skip across the surface and create a very visual bubble trail. Work a treat and cost zipp. Must be tight arse Tuesday!
  10. Not a bad choice to go a bit heavier than needed on the Tuna. Nothing worse than prolonging the fight beyond what's necessary and increases the probability of getting sharked. I use a Saltiga deep 55 rod with an 8000 sized shimano for tuna trolling and bottom bouncing/jigging for Kings and Sambo's and find it suitable, so good choice with the demon blood 6/8.
  11. Pretty much. Lazy mans fishing at its best. If I do jig them i tend to use tiny upwards hops to try and imitate what an octopus or squid would look like and lower them as slow as I can to let the plastic skirts do their work.
  12. Haven't used it with soft plastics as yet (prefer spin rods for SP's). Only really used it with Octo style jigs to date. Like all micro jig type set ups, bigger fish tend to dictate terms of the fight until they tire out a bit and you can pump them up from depth. Will be slop lining some SP's next opportunity as I've caught some nice snapper in mid water before with this method when baits are on the bottom.
  13. Nice rod! I have the Blast BL BJ66XXHB which is similar to the Saltist BJ66XXHS Spin 2 198cm Medium Regular 90-180g PE 0.8 – 2.0 but mines an overhead. Matched to a Daiwa Pluton and 20lb Suffix 832 its got plenty of poke. It's similar specs to the blue Gomoku but a little stiffer. Nowhere near as nice as your Saltist extreme, but I can vouch that its got enough grunt for all but the biggest snapper.
  14. I have a Shimano Raider 11 3 piece 6'6" rated 2-4kg. Matched up to any 2000 size reel, which is cheap and really handy as it fits in a suitcase or under a car seat. My favourite, though more expensive is a 4 piece Nitro Magnum Butt 4-6kg which suits a 3000 sized spin reel and is so versatile. I can flick small hard bodies and SP's for bream, cast 30g lures off the beach and jig 3/8 OZ jig heads for snapper and have pulled in some decent fish with it. Worth saving for! Can't help with online purchases, I buy all my lures etc at my local. Find a good store, become a regular and you will get
  15. Remember as a lad fishing tidal flats in NSW for silver whiting etc, we used a shiner type hook on a running rig with a long length of mono from the swivel to the hook, anywhere from 4 to 6 foot long. Always used beach worms and the bait would waft about in the current and fish would grab and run on a light drag and hook themselves. Worked on all the local estuarine species including bream, flathead and chopper tailor, though we almost always got bitten off by those toothy buggers. Thinking about trying this method on KG's to see if they take a bait and swim off in a similar way. Anyone have a
  16. With the increase in popularity and availability of circle hooks for KGW fishing, are they the go to hook that advertisers want us to believe, or are people trying them and going back to shiners, long shanks or bait keepers. What's your favorite KG hook and terminal set up for boat/kayak fishing?
  17. Sounds like a fun bucket list. I would have no problems using my Nitro Magnum Butt with a certate 2500R for all these fishing styles. I use it plastic fishing for snapper with 15lb Tufline. A second spool with 30lb braid would cover trolling and casting in Monduram and the Murray. The Nitro is 7'6" and rated 4-6kg but can fish heavier than this. Most new 2500 sized reels will have up to 7 or 8kg drag and heaps of capacity for up to 30lb braid.
  18. Coffs Harbour has always been a popular holiday destination, obviously not only for humans!
  19. X 2 for the Dynamix Estuary rod from Ray and Annes. Matched with a 2500 sized reel, light line and circle hooks, these rods are almost purpose built for bait fishing whiting. Enough flex in the tip section to flick light terminal tackle a good distance without losing softer baits, mine has easily handled salmon, tailor, dart, sand whiting and bream off NSW beaches (with some patience), so will handle most of what we are likely to catch shore based in SA. Being 2 piece it is handy for travel and also being a bit longer they sit nice and high in a sand spike to get over any shore dump.
  20. I have had 7000 for about 15 years, gets used about once a year on the beach and never misses a beat. Have not used the new model. Also have a Shimano charter special that has also been faultless as a "winch" on a 6' solid tip glass rod on charters for yonks. As its my back up rig, it usually gets "lent out" to others that break theirs or want to try an overhead, so the level wind comes in handy. Its slow to crank up from depth, doesn't have a huge drag but handles most of what we get off Yorkes etc. I rate it as a solid low cost option that will do the job if its not pushed beyond what it

    Handy pliers

I grabbed them at their Littlehampton (Mt Barker) store, they were in a display box in one of the isles. Might pay to ring other locations but looked like they had stacks of them.

Cutting edge seems fine, no problems with 80lb mono and 10lb fireline. The blades are replaceable with a small Allen key, but lord knows where you'd get replacement blades from. The nose is about 7cm long so should be fine for getting hooks out that are lodged inside a fishes mouth. The whole plier is 20cm in length. The tang lines up well at the tip and is good for all but the smaller split rings you would have on bream sized lures, but will handle heavy split rings found on deep jigs and tuna type lures. The blades have a basic crimping set up which would be OK if no better options were ava
  23. Picked these up at Bunnings for twenty bucks. Aluminium handles with stainless steel nose. No lanyard or pouch. Way less grief if they go over the side compared to some other brands!
  24. Dylbaa, both the combo's you have will handle most schoolies. Obviously need to not go as hard with the X rap (and hope your not anchored up if you hook a stonker)! Set a live bait with the catana and flick softies with the lighter rig. Won't need a bait runner.
  25. Nitro Magnum Butt rod with 3000 size Daiwa or 4000 size Shimano spin reel. Other option is standard barra type trolling rod (double handed models) in 4 - 6kg and a Curado or calcutta baitcast reel would be ample for most Coorong mullies. Have pulled decent black jew off darwin with both these options out of charter boats.
