  1. Fillets for me or cut into flatty tail shape
  2. The first smoked fish frame I had was off a 20kg Kingy, head and all. That was superb. Just sprinkled with salt and brown sugar. So much meat between the bones and in the head. Have done it with snapper frames as well. I did a longtail tuna frame and head about six months ago on the BBQ. Fantastic as well.
  3. Well, cooked it for an hour at 150 deg on the BBQ. Just not long enough to cook near the bone. I was eating the outside bits though. Heaps of oil was pouring out of it though when cooking. Still nice and juicy. Saying that I won't do another on the bone again. You just don't get that good a smoke flavour. I'll never be able to eat it all by myself so I'll make some smoked mackeral patties and a mackeral dip out of it. Last time I used long tail tuna for the dip. I used this simple recipe http://allrecipes.com.au/recipe/20745/smoked-whitefish-dip.aspx?rum=us
  4. I'm going to smoke this big piece of mackeral this arvo in the BBQ with the lid down. I get some really good smoke off the solid plate. Been brining for 48 hrs now drying off in the fridge. If it tastes good I'll let you know. If it is crap I will never mention it again.
  5. Cheers. A bit later then. Must be coming in to spawn.
  6. If I may be so bold - what time of year? I'm thinking the same as Pt Augusta, winter to late spring?
  7. Hey Guys, Anybody know where the Kingy Hotspots are in the bay from the boat? I can imagine they follow the ledges at the bottom of Kellidie and Horse Peninsula and maybe also into the mouth of Dutton Bay? I've fished the bay plenty of times but never those areas and never for Kingies, always head out into the bay around the Brothers or out from Farm Beach.
  8. What are you looking for? Somebody to share costs with your rig?
  9. The lead in old batteries will mostly be in the form of lead oxide and lead suphates. I think you have to melt it with carbon or something to extract pure lead suitable for sinkers. Plus there is lead sludge in there as well. There is a bit on the web about this and the consensus is it is not worth it. A mate of mine, much older than me, and a very long time ago, found a very large number (100+) of old batteries that had been dumped illegally out in the scrub. They thought of sinkers or selling the lead so they poured all the acid out and restacked the batteries. Then, as you do in the '70
  10. Thanks for the advice. A thing I find amazing about smoked chook is that the smoked flavour goes all the way to the bone. And that is a whole chook. Never had that with pork, lamb or beef. I cut a big spanish mackeral up into 3 pieces. I have one left in the freezer. I will smoke it this week in the weber after a defrost and cutting into steaks. I'll post some piccies when finished.
  11. Wilda, How do you find the chicken skin. Every time I smoke one it comes out rubbery.
  12. Forgot to add. One of the things brining does for me is that is puts that nice "skin" on the fish when I pat them dry and leave them in the fridge for a day of so. This "skin" seems to keep the fillets a bit more moist.
  13. I was scratching my head reading this topic over the last couple of weeks. Googled "Dry Brining" without effect and you know, too proud to ask. Wondering what this method is. Then it hit me - you are just lightly salting them! When did salting become "Dry Brining" Best oxymoron I've seen recently

The other method for lure connection I use is speed/quick connectors. I prefer the Norman ones: http://www.bcf.com.au/Product/Bill-Norman-Speed-Clips/124322. For bigger lures on Pelagics I use the Hawaiian snaps. They might not work on real small lures used for YFW though. I suppose you would have to get the smaller ones and check the action of the lure. I use them on Barramundi/Mangrove Jack sized lures quite effectively though down to about 50mm long. Makes it so much easier when changing lures.

How often do you have to tie an FG knot whilst wading? How light do you fish? I wouldn't have thought that you break too many knots at all.

Uni knots are good I find. Rapala knot is good as well and easy to tie. I reckon you might want to learn how to tie a good double like a bimini twist and then learn a good double to leader knot like a yucatan, albright, FG etc.
  17. Agree. My TLD 15 and 25 and Tyrnos 30 had little to no grease in the bearings from new. Always good to learn how to pull reels apart and service them yourself.
  18. I was having a look on google as well and it seems nobody has tried to fix the problem or worked out what it is - just noisy. It could be something simple like the wrong grease on the anti-reverse clutch or a dodgy one. Happened to my Saltiga Dogfight, sent it back for warranty works. Stuff happens, even with expensive well regarded gear.
  19. If Your interested mate we have the full range in store at work.... They certainly seem like a good bit of kit and well priced to. Tell us how much? Was playing with a saltist nero the other day and they seemed all right. Had a bad experience with a cheaper daiwa so have been reluctant to go back.
  20. I reckon this may be one of the problems with these smaller reels that have good drags. We fish them too hard. Not having a go at you lureaddict (I have caught big golden trevally on mine on SPs, it is good fun), but I would have thought that a 3000 stradic was a 10lb line max fishing reel and setting a realistic drag. I have one as well and it is only a 2500 body with a larger spool. I know people like to fish light but low-mid price 2500 size reels for me are my tommy, salmon trout, flathead and whiting reels. Of course you can catch larger stuff but if it is done day in and day out then sur
  21. I spoke to ray and annes today. The new daiwa BG SW should be in by the end of the month. Maybe wait to have a look at those?
  22. I have a thunnus CI4 4000 and a stradic CI4+ 3000. Have caught 10kg tuna on the thunnus and fish up to 2 kg on the stradic. No problems on either. No frame flex from what I can tell. The stradic is a great little reel.
  23. Mate, out near Lindsay Island just past Renmark I was getting them in the middle of winter. Not just once but over the 5 years I lived in Adelaide.
  24. I'd be getting your tommy and gar gear ready, especially burley, and fish for snook incidentally. When tommies and gar are around I find often that the snook often hang around further out. Can usually snag one or two on soft plastics
  25. I reckon the Magnus Effect explains it better.
